Sakamoto is actually dying and he wanted to live his last year to the maximum,make friends and help people,when he says is going off to the NASA is a lie.
When Hayabusa-senpai ask him if he had any regrets Sakamoto replies that the only regret he had is no knowing how many holes are in the ceiling of the hospital(implying that he has past a lot of his time watching at the ceiling on a hospital room because he is ill.)

There's a load of shit pointing pretty heavily towards the fact that he has a terminal illness. He says he counted all the holes in the nurse's office pretty much completely out of context. He said some shit about "if" he were to jump into the sea of life rather than when. There's a page in the manga where it looks like he's in a coffin >>144391837. The OP and ED have a lot of shit death talk in them. There's loads of shit if you just, y'know, google it. And it's not even that much of a stretch.

Eh, Sakamoto being healthy just has as much of a point, and last manga chapter's cover could signify the end of the manga instead. Plus, some anon mentioned that Der Erlkonig is a favourite of German teachers, which could easily be why Sakamoto knows the song.
