I feel they focused on the wrong theme. They should have focused more on how, when you're able to go back, you stop wanting to move forward. The dramatic narrative should have followed her on coming to terms with the fact that no reality will ever be 100% perfect, so she should learn to take some concessions and keep moving forward.

Instead the plot became some time travelling star-crossed lovers plot which did not get a good payoff in the end anyway.

But that is what it was about. She didn't want to accept the inevitability of her friend group changing and growing apart, so she kept going back to avoid that outcome
