You make it sound like anki is useless when most vocab can be studied just fine through anki alone. There isn't some switch in your brain for each word that only gets flipped once you remember it on your own outside of anki.

Of course you can't learn a language just through grinding vocab, but trying to gain vocab without dedicating half an hour a day or so to anki is an absolute waste of time. Why do people promoting reading always have to do so while acting like anki is poison?

This was the most difficult line for me. I interpret the whole of 心身ともに疲弊しきっていた僕は何を思ったのか as the kind of additional commentary you some times see. So, basically,
What was I thinking in? I threw it in the microwave still in the package
