Damn.

My kanji, vocab abilities are wat higher than my grammar apparently. I make myself understood pretty easily, but I'm sure I always sound like an idiot, because I always opt for easier (and probably more obtuse) grammatical constructions.

How do you guys make the grammar stick? Is anki good for that sort of thing? Or do you do exercises in a book?

Oh, I think I get it. Something about it could only connect if it was at the equator, but still if anyone could give an English version of that so I can fully comprehend that would be nice.
>>
>>144252398
I've been in Japan for about 1.5 months, but I'll only be here a year. I want to get to N2 before the end of my time here, and while my vocab, kanji are really high, and I generally dont have too much of an isues expressing myself or having basic conversation, my grammar is teh weakest spot and probably less than N4 lvl. SO naturally working to improve it would be the most benefit for me. But just reading a grammar book seems wasteful, and using grammar anki decks also seems too passive. So I'm wondering if workbooks are the way to go or what?
>>
>>144252346
>>144252522

A space elevator is something that connects the ground with things in geostationary orbit, like man made satellites

Geostationary orbit is above the equator, so if you built the elevator anywhere other than on the equator it would be slanted

Right?

So this is the wrong place to come for tips n tricks then. I'm sure if I had ten years to dick around then it would go up nice and steady, but that is insanely inefficient. I guess I'll just pick up some JLPT books and drill them the old fashioned way and use them as much as possible when speaking
>>
>>144252769
I mean if you want advice on how to learn grammar there's plenty here but if you're looking for efficiency advice the only thing people are going to say is "take speed"

ok.

I'm in medical school, taking a research year in Japan, I played around with some Japanese for a summer after uni before med school, and have been here for 1.5 months. I'm basically N4 in that time, and most of the studying is done commuting to and from the hospital and the evenings at home. I don't have time to just "guess my way" though shitty VNs to learn grammar well, and just reading the books is too passive to make it stick well. I was wondering if anyone did anything uniquely fast or efficient.

We all use anki, and that is obscenely fast way to build a massive vocabulary and kanji base, so I didn't think it would have been a huge stretch to see if there was something people used for grammar as well. I might try some of the anki decks for that. I really want N2-tier by next May, even if I can't get there, I'd like to get as close as possible.

I'm gonna start the Nihongo Sou Matome for N3 next month as those seem pretty concise.

The thing about grammar is that it's not really something that you can just drill into your head like you can with vocab, grammar is more like a puzzle that you only really get a grasp of through encountering it in the wild and seeing how it all fits together in native material

There is a DoJG deck in anki which is okay, but the best and fastest way to learn grammar really is just through reading as much native shit as you can

How many months in did you finish your first "real" visual novel (as in, not Hanahira)?

Is this from the novels? In the CoR his works are supposed to be HARDER THAN STEEL level of difficulty but it didn't seem so much from this block, although I had to dictionary/OCR a bunch of words...

"Hum, wasn't that Araragi-kun's? But that's weird isn't it? Before, when I rode on the back of your bicycle, it seems it had a completely different shape."
"That was for school commute. There's no way I'd ride a granny bike like that in my private time."
"Hm, I see. Araragi-kun is a high schooler right?"
Senjougahara said as she nodded. You're a high schooler too.
"High schooler. Mountain bike."
"You're talking as if you want to say something..."
"High schooler. Mountain bike. Middle schooler. Butterfly knife. Elementary schooler. Skirt lifting."
"What's with that ill-intended listing!?"
"There's no adjectives or particles, so you can't know if it's ill-mannered or not do you? You're assuming on your own and yet yelling at a girl, Araragi-kun. Intimidation is a form of violence, isn't it? Or is it abusive language a form of violence? In any way, that's not good..."
"Then, let me see you put particles and adjectives in that."
"A high schooler's mountain bike is, along with a middle schooler's butterfly knife, more than a elementary schooler's skirt lifting, unlikely better."
"I don't even want to comment on that!"
"No, Araragi-kun. That's not it, you're supposed to say [unlikely] isn't an adjective but a verb with another negation auxiliary verb, right?"
"How am I supposed to know this instantly!?"
That's just like the holder of the highest grades in the top class. No, maybe it's my fault...
I'm bad at japanese.

Done.
Although I think めくり is being ambiguous as "fold" and "skirt lifting" so I think it loses some meaning in that. Not to mention the part of sentence structure which doesn't make sense in english at all, but meh.

I take longer to come up with english sentences than to read that, so I'm doing it right, r-right?

"That one's for commuting to school. You don't really think I ride a granny's bike around in my free time, do you?"
"I see. You are a high schooler after all."
Senjougahara is nodding her head in agreement.
You're a high schooler too, you know.
"High schooler, mountain bike"
"Seems like you have something more to say..."
"High school, mountain bike. Junior high schooler, butterfly knife. Grade schooler, skirt flipping"
"What does that malicious-sounding line even mean?"
"There aren't even any particles or adjectives, so you can't claim it's malicious. Don't just blurt random guesses out loud at innocent girls, Araragi. Threats can be considered violence too, you know?"
In that case, your foul mouth is an act of violence too.
I guess nothing will change no matter what I say here...
"So why don't you try putting some particles and adjectives in there?"
"A highschooler 'S mountain bike IS EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS than a junior high schooler 'S butterfly knife AND a grade schooler 'S skirt flipping
"
"You're not even going to respond?!"
"Great job, Araragi! Actually, the proper response here would be "ridiculous" is not an adjective, it's a -error: this joke is untranslatable into English-"
"At least try and replace it with something!!"
As one would expect from the person with the highest grades in the entire DJT.
Actually, I might be the only one who doesn't get it...

I'm starting to hate this shit so much. It's such a high difficulty jump over everything else, simply because they talk about shit I have no context for. If I was a native, it would have been a refresher from high school at worst, but instead it all just goes over my head even as I try my best to understand everything.

Also, are Japanese students actually expected to know shit like why the officially recognized date of the start of a shogunate from 1000 years ago changed, or is this supposed to show how smart the students are?

I'm reading my first LN (KonoSuba) and it took me like an hour to get through the character's introductions because too much kanji.

After that when I got to the actual thing, I stop like once for every 3 kanji on average.

Knowing this, what's a good way to exercise to remember them?

For now, since I'm only a few (2 pages) in, I start from the beginning again, but since I already know what sentences mean, I simply see the kanji again to commit them to memory, trying to avoid "remembering the whole sentence" but remembering words only.

Does anyone know of a good/better way to improve this?
Also, if you've been here before, how long does it take regularly to get past this phase of needing to look up something almost every new sentence?

I'm trying to avoid reading too much so I don't forget the kanji I've been seeing on every new sentence, kinda like with Anki (reading new sentences until I get about 10~20ish of new words every day).

Been studying Japanese since December but only started taking it seriously last month or so, doing my reps on Anki every day, reading a lot about grammar and practicing my reading skills and comprehension with "Yotsubato!".

Last week, I took a placement test for a Japanese course and managed to skip Basic I, II, III, and IV. Considering the time that I've studied, should I have done better at it or is it right?

Something that I've read recently had this:

And without giving a second thought, I thought of it as "I want you", but now I'm giving it a second thought and... why is it again?
It's similar to あなたが好き (I like you) but what was the rule/thing/whatever it's called that makes it ignore the が as actor in the phrase and make it the object instead?

The DoJG Anki deck is one of the worst things ever made.

Grammar should never be done through Anki - unlike vocab, it's too complex and context-reliant to be squeezed onto flashcards, so you either have these enormous cards which are awful for the quick recollection that Anki is designed for, or cards which miss a lot of the depth and subtlety required to actually understand the grammar point in the wild. Consulting DoJG is good and useful, but you should learn grammar from reading. Attempting to do it through Anki will only cripple your progress.

That's not how spaced repetition works. If you're supposed to see a word again today, that means you're supposed to see that word again today.
If you limit your reviews, words will get pushed weeks later until they have a chance to get a spot in your "40 cards a day limit". Especially if you're doing 20 or 30 new ones a day.

仕える者が代わる

By 者 the new leader refers to himself. 仕える is the action of the followers. Since he's tallking to said followers, imagine it like [君たちが]仕える者が代わる

仕えられる者 seems okay to you from the grammatical standpoint, and okay, "the person being served" is okay statement in English, but you need to note the connotations usage of various grammatical constructs have in Japanese.

Passive in Japanese as the connotation of the target of the action suffering trhough something or something bad being done to them.
Compare
妹にケーキを食べられた
妹が私のケーキを食べた

Seeing this, you should be able to tell what's wrong with 仕えられる者. The new leader is not suffering any bad effect...

>Consulting DoJG is good and useful
Hence the deck. Anki creates an environment where you are forced to consult it and when you come across things in reading, you already have that awareness. It is the exact same principle behind reading Tae Kim and the Core Decks.

>but you should learn grammar from reading
That's what the example sentences are for.

>Attempting to do it through Anki will only cripple your progress.
It is the complete opposite. Using the DoJG deck speeds up your reading progress in the same way the Core vocab decks speed up your vocab acquisition progress. I find it hard to belief that after all this time there are still anti-grammar retards here.
>>
>>144292496
yeah i use it but i have a question
the current setup is 'sentence ○○ rest of sentence' with the 丸 being the missing grammar construct + english usage explanation

im finding im just remembering the sentence and not the construct itself exactly, would it make much difference if it was just 'construct' then the back of the cards were the usage
>>

Passive doesn't need to be suffering though does it? 仕えられる者 could be positive depending on context anyway and acceptable no? I.e. 私はあなたに愛される

>>
>>144292683
You're right that it doesn't have to, but mainly in examples like yours, where the verb used overrides it. I.e. it's hard to argue that being loved is a bad thing.

I don't think 仕える does this, expecially not in example of someone killing the previous learder.

I only started learning a couple days ago so this is a retard question, but what the fuck does soushite actually mean and how do I use it? I see it in a lot of different sentences but none of them seem to have similarities. I am retarded.

I don't think doing DoJG deck is in any way anti-reading.
Not having to stop everything and go google/flip through DoJG PDF when you encounter a new grammar construct sounds like a better reading experience than having to deal with shit as you encounter it.

Nah man, unless you ENCOUNTER grammar and vocab in THE WILD you'll never understand its true NUANCE. Of course it goes without saying that REAL Japanese from masturbation material for NATIVE teenagers is the only way to go.

What does it mean when you capitalise some words in your sentence? It wasn't in my DOEG Anki grammar deck and hence I have no idea what it means.

What's a good font for a vocab deck? IPA looks like ass.

What reading does 壊 take in 「敵1体に近接壊攻撃」? It's referring to the smash/break damage done by a weapon

What does きる as an auxiliary verb mean? I know some of the meanings from dictionary definitions like わかりきる or おもいきる but not every word is in the dictionary and I haven't completely figured out the meaning on it's own yet. There's also こむ which is kind of vague sometimes too but idk

I just realized this is actually kind of regular. Should I try not to fix it or will I get wrecked when I go to read books if I learn the hiragana this way? Am I being retarded because of how freaked out I am?

Then on the 'fonts for' box select Japanese and you should be able to change it to Meiryo or something

Linguist here. Not just any custom font. A fucking featural syllabary. Not made of rotated existing characters. Designed in a believable way so that people would think some random other writing system got put in place of the hiragana.

How autistic do you have to be to do that?

There's lots of things that affect what font your browser actually uses and it doesn't always use the font you tell it to.

If you're on Firefox right click some text > Inspect Element > "Fonts" tab at very right side
that will tell you the actual fonts being used.

On Firefox it also seems to use your Latin font setting for kanji for some reason, while using the Japanese font setting for only kana by default so having different settings there can result in your different fonts.

Another thing to consider is fallback. If the font being requested is missing the glyphs you need then the system goes to a fallback font. You can check your default fonts and their fallbacks by typing
>fc-match -s sans-serif
in a terminal.
