Retro anime thread.
Whats was the oldest thing you watched recently? Isn't it time to pay your respects to the old classics?

Just ended Bubblegum Crisis, it was awesome, realy had fun.

I've been watching KITE lately. Funny enough I found out that there's a live-action movie made.

Been watching Yu Yu Hakusho because I love HxH and thought I'd check out some more Togashi stuff (and people seemed to like it well enough, occasionally saw people claiming it's better than HxH).

So is the hype around YYH totally nostalgia? Because I'm at the part when Yusuke & co. just rescued Yukina from the kingpin guy and it's pretty boring (except for Kuwabara) so far.

Botan is love, and the two main characters are a lot more fun and interesting than your average battle shounen protag, since they're delinquents.

Yeah the 3 of them are great, I just wish the plot and fights were interesting instead of just "get beat really hard until the hidden power within yourself wins"

Yeah I gotta admit I dropped it shortly after they enter the demon world

but you gotta keep in mind that it isn't meant to be binged on, it's supposed to be a weekly fix.

why the FUCK would ANYONE want a series from the 80s/90s to be rebooted now?

Most of the appeal of retro anime comes from the fact that the artstyle is a LOT better than millenial artstyles. Rebooting them with a recent visual style would instantly remove 70% of their appeal.

Thats bring the questio: why 80s/90s its so good? Can't be shadding and style alone, there is this certain charm to it, but I could never put in words
>>
>>144203916
No, it's the little monkey thing on the left. Otherwise, yes. Making the protagonist female means they could spend even MORE time on fanservice shots of a little girl. Genius!

it's the style

If you're a drawfag you'll understand.
80s style feels strong, healthy, pleasing. Recent styles feel atrophied and constrained.
>>
>>144204172
Only for ten minutes. But the ammount of violence was unexpected.
>>
>>144202925

I don't know. Reboots are almost criminal.

That said, it might be a case of people just preferring digital animation and coloring to the traditional process. Which I can sort of envision for (and I'm not using it as in insult) people on the autism spectrum who thrive on predictability and uniformity in digital (perfectly uniform colors, cg is always on model, etc) while human flaws and variability are more evident in the details of old animation. Or a generation raised with extreme materialism being unaccustomed to transience and appreciation of quality over quantity. Whatever.

Despite being budget as it is, it was also fairly unpopular. So, from initial 50 something episodes they were cut to 39 and had to fight for extra 2-3 episodes.

Considering above, I say they did pretty good desu, I hate when shows have no endings and being rushed kind of pales to me.

that's an artistic choice, not a result of the technology. they could choose to maintain the 80s look if they wanted to. But I recall some director saying that the colors never quite came out as intended and that digital versions actually reflect their intent much better.

I recently finished Shamanic Princess.
One of the most boring anime I've ever seen. Every episode was a fight to stay awake, and after many of them I just fell asleep when I managed to finish. The last two episodes were slightly more interesting, if it weren't for that it'd be my first anime to get a 2/10 (got 3).
Seems that a lot of these ~6 episode OVAs are really bad, Iria was also one of the worse anime I've seen.

I don't see the point in establishing Jean as some kind of boy wonder fledgling scientist only to have Captain Nemo show up and completely blow him out of the water as a scientist, thus relegating him to useless status in that regard by comparison. Here's the thing:
The worst entry in the Dominion franchise is Tank Swat 01, which is a CG piece of shit that makes your eyes bleed, but everything else is better than anything from GitS, except maybe the first movie in terms of animation and direction.

On the other hand, the worst entry in the GitS franchise (so far) is Man-Machine interface, which is dumb, eye-rolling AND ugly CG shit that makes your eyes bleed.

So there's really no contest here. You can't argue that Oshii's high-budget photorealism wankery can singlehandedly redeem the flaws that plague the GitS franchise.

No, there's no reason to.
Nothing is superior to eurobeat in a racing show, or even as good.
I'm not saying that as a joke.
If your racing show doesn't have eurobeat in it, it can not be as good as Initial D, let alone better.

I'm assuming you're downloading sequentially and didn't let the download finish.

The OPs and EDs are cut out as separate files and then linked in the episode files so that the respective file plays when needed, saving space.

Set the OP/ED files on top priority and let them finish downloading first. And next time instead of being such a brain dead fool, pay attention and think before doubting.

I'll vouch for Takarajima since nobody else did so

Visually the show has aged tremendously well and being an adaptation of western fiction, the plot is guaranteed to be good. Long John Silver's portrayal is one of the better ones I've seen.

The story takes about five episodes to get going and Jim, the main character is an irritating kid though.

I'd argue that Devil Hunter Yoko is the most generic anime ever. It's exactly the not quite tentacle hentai panty schoolgirl fighting evil monsters asian cartoon that everyone in the '90s who was only vaguely aware of it thought anime in general was. It's somehow the only thing in existence that captures that to a T.

>>144204042
I'd agree with this. The first episode is this crazy echi parody thing that's entertaining to watch and it's funny to see where it's going. The other episodes are so generic it doesn't matter and it's like watching a watered down version of Sailor Moon with duller characters.

Great then, because if you'd otherwise only seen up to episode 5 at most and have no other experience with the series, then I'd perfectly understand why you'd wonder why you should bother. I'd definitely recommend you continue in this case. Please don't watch episode 7 and just skip to 8, trust me when I say this is a good idea and you miss nothing of worth.

1981-1990

Think of the first decade of our era: year 1 to 10.

I forgot the name of it, but it's that one ova where a dog spends 45 minutes sexually harrassing its owner who looks suspiciously like Noriko. Half way through the dog gets molested by an octopus. Then after that there's a clip where the dogs va dresses up like a furry and humps the studio secretary.

Was fucking weird.

I'm rewatching Ie Naki Ko, which was a hit in my country back in the days (constantly reran through the 80s and the early 90s) and is something of a cult classic here. Probably my first real tearjerker. Still holds up ok.

So, where does the Evangelion era end and where does the post-Evangelion era start?

I feel like I've run out of adventure anime to watch.

Anybody got any obscure examples? Preferably not really short OVAs. At least Ruin Explorers length. It's painful to get into a good series and have it be over so quickly.

Yes, I've watched Gorg.
>>

Orphen was such a disappointment.

No sense of adventure, no decent action,no interesting storyline, not particularly good animation most of the time, and every character who wasn't Orphen was a completely useless load and either unlikable or incredibly annoying.

At least the OPs were cool.

Well 95-2002 for Eva era maybe, 2003-2006 for post-Eva since nothing realy impactful happend between Eva and Moe, but I didn't put too much tought on it, just made this up so it may sparkle a discussion about "Eras/Ages" in anime industry

I'm four episodes into Violinist of Hamelin.

It's really weird to see a show alternate between slideshow picture drama and really good animation with no inbetween.

>It's really weird to see a show alternate between slideshow picture drama and really good animation with no inbetween.

It was common back in the day, unfortunetly. I think this is the worst thing about old anime
>>
>>144244758
I've watched a lot of old anime and nothing takes it to the extreme like Hamelin. It's either no animation or all animation.
>>
Speaking of retro, how come so much hentai crossed the border back in the day?

Shame it doesn't happen now cause the uncensoring is nice.

It's more like :

50s and 60s were a hodgepodge of things with lots of western influence
Heroes and robots were very big in the late 70s(Cyborg 009, Mazinger), with a shift into more serious scifi later on (Yamato, 0079).
VHS started in 1984 with Dallos, and didn't fall off until 1995 at least. 1991-4 were slower years than the 80s but still had the same sort of spirit.
1997 is when late night broadcasting started, which meant a shift to shorter and niche shows. Digital production showed up a few years later, driving costs down and caused a massive variety and volume of things to be produced for a few years.
2009 is where you can see where the economic collapse took a toll on the industry. Innovation mostly dries up, quantity of things produced decreases.
Anime settles in on a mostly stable new model in 2012-3, heavily focused on adaptations of safe material and advertising.

Eva did not really have the influence some people seem to think it does.

oops, meant late 60s - mid 70s for super robots, sentai, toku, etc.

Truly the age of integrity in animation.
>>
>>144246210

It did well, inspired a handful of mecha shows, and maybe helped convince some people of viability of more "mature" themes on television (by video/dvd sales as a substitute for toy sales), but didn't change the entire landscape to the degree shows like Yamato or even Haruhi did.
>>
>>144246210
That's what I thought too.
The artistic influence is only a part of it, there's also the influence on the industry, where Eva brought in the money during a dark age. So while it artistically caused works like Brain Powerd and Rahxephon, in also caused (perhaps) Cowboy Bebop and Lain to be made, by bringing in the money.
I've also heard it credited for the shift to late night anime, with reairings of Eva being the first to air late night.

Note that I'm no expert in anime, and this is just specualtion and rumors.

By the way, was the Rei Clone archetype around before Eva? (I know it isn't very popular but still)
>>
>>144248555
Neon Genesis Evangelion lead to the creation of the production committee process that is now the standard for niche anime. That is one of the most influential and important thing ever in the anime industry.
