The story was good for what it was trying to tell and show. The 'goodness' of the story is relative to the theme of the work. Let's say we add some deep shit to this movie, could the movie become something greater? I think it would have only been a distraction from enjoying the movie itself.

Have you seen the economy in Japan? You can practically see it's decline through the last three seasons of anime

First 15 minutes are the best part of the movie. All the racers had great styles and felt like an actual wacky racers anime

then later we get racers vs faceless uninteresting mook army soldiers who get swatted down like flies and Funky Boy who actually stops the race entirely. The whole thing of setting the race on a planet that was doing bioweapon experiments fucked the whole movie

Surprisingly good dub. Not even joking. And in this case it's a pretty big plus because reading the subtitles takes away a lot from enjoying every frame the amazing visuals and noticing the very small details.

The animation was well worth it. The ending is super sudden and rushed. "THEY WON AND LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER, THE END."
I liked the way the story and world was laid out. I really enjoy the kind of story where you only get a slice of the world. You learn a little bit about every character, but they're not completely wrapped up in the main story. Every side character had their own motivations and story going on outside the scope of the main plot, and I fucking LOVE that.

The only subs I could tolerate were this and space dandy

there's this one moment where jp is laying on some bed of flowers after crashing a bike
and he looks into the skies and stars

and his eyes literally spark a flame of dreams

that was incredible

Remember how Trava got his own little OVA anime before the movie came out? It would have been so hype if every single racer had gotten their own animated adventure to really flesh out the cast of racers and help viewers settle on favorites and be more invested in the race itself.
Instead of just 'JP is the protagonist so I'll root for him'

Great animation, soundtrack, art direction etc, unmemorable characters + story. But we all watched it for animation, right?

Redline was only good when they were racing, which is a shame that that's only like a third of the entire movie. Even worse than that is that the best racing part is the Yellow line which is the very start of the movie, you may as well just stop watching after the first 20 minutes or so because the focus of the rest of the movie is some shitty romance.

I don't know about JP and the general guy, the way they interacted didn't seem very father son like. But they definitely dropped some hints about Machinehead being Sonoshee's father. They even give a little nod to each other during the restaurant scene. Not to mention, when she got hurt during Redline he was the only other racer besides JP who reacted to it.

I feel like it would be even better in a cinema but I missed it.
