ITHVNR works great with many visual novels but apparently Hitori no Qualia is not one of them. Luckily, the original ITH works great. Because of this, I wanted to pin them both on my taskbar, but they had the same icon. So I cobbled up an ITH-style ITHVNR icon to use instead. If anyone else cares then links are in the Hongfire ITHVNR thread since 4chan won't let me post links.

The implication of this is, if I was not broken I could somehow excuse my behavior, and wouldn't have to think about this (-> but since I am broken, there are no excuses with the implication that behavior is gonna keep happening)

Something like that? Honestly it's still pretty hard to comprehend but I think I know about this thing a bit more now than at the start

Does anyone else find that drinking actually sometimes helps them to study better??
Obviously not drinking so much that you can't think or focus, but I mean one or two pints helps boost my passion or energy if I'm struggling to stay motivated on a boring task. Also it boosts my confidence a little so I'm not bothered about making mistakes for example when practising speaking.

>>144092290
It's harder to think of the kanji when only given the keyword rather than the other way around. It only tells you to do it that way because if you plan on writing you will be thinking of words in your head in english and then converting to kanji and not the other way around. If you're like everyone else and only care about reading then studying kanji-keyword is fine imo.

I think it's because you're shown all the individual elements of the story when you look at the kanji rather than having to remember all them with only given the keyword. It's harder with just the keyword which means you remember it better when studied.

About 200 words into Anki, and I can pretty much recognize every kanji by treating it like a picture. (which is really cool. I'd imagine that the Japanese have the highest average reading speed.)
But I'm worried that I'll soon start mixing them up with similar looking ones. How much attention did you guys pay to the exact lines on the kanji? Did you practice writing them?
I have no idea what the stroke order would be for any of them. Is that a bad thing?

the general rules for stroke order can be learned in a minute, there are a few exceptions though. Just plug in the kanji you see in anki for the first time into jisho and write it once with the correct stroke order. You'll understand all the rules fast.

There's one thing I don't quite get regarding kanji. Suppose you are reading a sentence and you come across one that you do not know, and there's no furigana. How would you know the way to pronounce it? You could get the (supposed) meaning from context just like every other language, but then you at least know the characters. Now I just have a sentence with a blank part in it.
>>
>>144092817

>>
Help with this sentence please?

> 勿体ぶったり焦らされるのは嫌いじゃないみたい
I'm guessing 勿体 is in the sense of overemphasis here, ぶったり is... I'm not really sure if it's "to hit", but I'm going with that.
"About being (hit with, emphasis) teased, she doesn't seem to hate it"

Is this correct?
>>
>>144093800
Yeah, but it doesn't take as long as you'd think to learn the readings of all the common kanji, as long as you keep reading and learning vocab

Some kanji have phonetic components too, like if they all share the same radical they'll have the same on-yomi, like 包 抱 泡 砲 胞 飽 are all ほう, so that can help sometimes
>>
>>144093923
勿体ぶる

And holy cows how do I put this (that phrase with 焦らされる) in english?
>>
>>144094053
Like I said,
>then you at least know the characters
None of those characters are foreign, the worst thing you can do is place an emphasis wrong or something. I may not know what "abnegation" means when I see it for the first time, but I can just read all the characters and I know how to pronounce it. If I see 水 for the first time in my life, it stops right there.

>>144093961
Thanks. I suppose those are the kind of rules you'd pick up while learning them anyway, so I suppose it'll be fine then.
>>
>>144093711

>>
Guys what does 斜め上 mean?

It's being used as "ナナメ上の回答が好き"
>>
>>144094338
>None of those characters are foreign, the worst thing you can do is place an emphasis wrong or something
You can pronounce it completely wrong.
>>
>>144094507
imoutoの回答はだいたい斜め上
>>
>>144094611
I am really struggling to think of an example that won't at least end up with you saying a word recognizable as "oh, he means...". It may be completely wrong, but even then you have a general idea of how it is pronounced. But you're welcome to give an example.
>>
>>144094722
Try reading some hard books and you'll find some. It's not like Japanese come across words they can't make a good guess for all that often either
>>
>>144094685
なるほど~

斜め上は「かわいいな~ナデナデしたいよぉ~」な感じの意味ですか?
>>
I have probably no idea what any of those words mean. I will still have a general idea of what they sound like. Because while the word is unknown, the characters that make up their pronunciation are not. This is not the case with kanji. Where the character is completely unknown to me. Whether Japanese know how to pronounce everything was never my question, and whether they understand the words even less so.
I really don't see the point you are trying to make.
>>
>>144094507
物事が予想の↑ではなく、↗とかの方向に進むことである。
>>
>>144094768
But coming across an unknown word in English that you don't know and can't pronounce is not at all the same as encountering an unknown kanji. If you're reading a text out loud and come across "hyperbole" you can still make a guess and read it like "hyperbole". You can't do that with kanji.

"John and Sally went to the مكتبة to pick up a كتاب." How would you deal with these words if you were reading the sentence out loud to someone? You can't read them and have no idea how they are pronounced.
>>
>>144094938
Thanks, I was thinking it would be something like that
>>
>>144095064
Yes you can.
If I come across 遉, I've never seen it before, I could easily make a guess and read it like 貞. It would be wrong, but I could do it.
>>
>>144095064
So?
>>
>>144093047
Yeah, I just add jukugo to my vocab deck as I would with any other word. There are not that many of them in common use, so I might as well just cram them.

Well you can google some mnemonic techniques and see what works best for you.

I noticed my retention got way, way better when I started to think and "link" new words to something else I already knew, like an action, another word or some character's line. When there isn't one I know, I make/google one.

Then whenever it comes up again, I kinda "oh, it's that phrase" and things get easier.

It's the opposite of poorly understood. It's probably one of the most well-understood mental illnesses in neurology. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Skepticism and suspicion are entirely different things. Being suspicious of mainstream scientific beliefs is a sign of delusion.

>Maybe there does exist some genuine neurological disorder that you call ADHD but it has little to no relation with what ADHD is defined as by common society.
People are shit at understanding things. That doesn't mean the thing isn't real and reasonably common. ADHD is overdiagnosed but it's not the storm of ignorant labeling you think it is, and people who suffer from ADHD can have it so bad that it makes it impossible for them to function.

Anon never said anything about the diagnosis at all. You're arguing against him because you think he's disagreeing with the idea that ADHD is overblown. He's not. He hasn't done anything but respond to things you said that have to do with the actual disorder itself, not its diagnosis.

Any language can get pretty confusing when you start, and even more when they decide to use those goddamn chink characters.
I even had trouble learning fucking English due to how bad education is in my third world shithole.

You can "learn" the kanji through vocabulary if you don't want to study them individually. Read the guide.

>I wish I at least could see (understand) the grammar basics like english (except they are different)
ffs, don't compare grammar from two completely different languages. At least try to understand it, even if you forget shortly after. You will need to review grammar when reading/writing/whatever.

I can be wrong in some stuff here. It's just my opinion.

Yes, you could start with that, then start reading kana-only material, like them. Like picture book, games for kids like pokemon or mother for example. Then start reading things for kids with a bit of kanji and furigana help, like shounen/shoujo manga or games for teens. And when you know enough words in kanji you could start reading stuff for normal adults. Of course you could take notes and shit while doing it, and skip things on these steps or shorten the duration since you have a brain bigger than a baby even if the difference is small.

I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable about the specific drugs to comment but there is clearly a culture of overreliance on them due to easiness despite the side effects.

The stuff taught in education, at least at elementary levels, is actually very useful. People need to read and write and do basic arithmetic, that's undeniable. And there's a lot learned through school structure unofficially, like socialising with the kids around you and following routines and the like.

That's not to say there isn't issues with the education system but it's easy to criticise and hard to fix, stuff that you consider useful others might laugh at (local history) and hard to show tangible results that show there's actually benefits without a testing regime, but that just means teachers teach to the tests instead of for the pupils. In practice it's almost impossible to implement.

>The stuff taught in education, at least at elementary levels, is actually very useful. People need to read and write and do basic arithmetic, that's undeniable.

That section of the rant was mostly about american middle and highschools, which have become so oriented on preparing students for standardized tests that it's insane.

Basic math. through basic geometry and "algebra 1", is very important. Trig could be taught better (don't start with triangles FFS) but it's important too. History is important but is so saturated with trivia that nobody remembers anything. English classes are a fucking joke, except for the parts where they force you to read (reading is good! reading is important! read, read, and read more!)

>And there's a lot learned through school structure unofficially, like socialising with the kids around you and following routines and the like.

In my opinion, the american school system is actually detrimental to natural socialization. The environment encourages castes and induces insecurity about your understanding of the social environment outside of your bubble, making you use your friends as an echo chamber. It reinforces the shittiness of society.

>I don't live in America, what about their schools causes this? How are they different from our schools? People will naturally form groups of friends, but that's just human nature.

American schools shuffle kids around every single class and every single year and the only place you get to see all the same people is when classes aren't in session. People generally fall into castes, not circles of friends, because they see people who take classes at the same level (e.g. remedial math, advanced math) in several classes a day, then get to see those people and *their* friends when classes aren't in session (basically, just at lunch). And you can meet some of those people again in classes next year, but mostly not the ones you shared classes with before, because even if you're in the same class grade level their schedule will shove most of your old classmates into a different class.

You don't have the security of sticking with more than a couple specific friends, and you're absolutely surrounded with people you don't know well. That's very bad, sociologically speaking.

It wouldn't be so bad if there were a way to stay in the same class as your circle of friends like japanese schools do. Japanese schools have other problems though; they go off the deep end in the opposite direction.

Additionally, there's a strong authoritarian structure, and it makes people group together to keep their spines straight.

I'm not sure I see the difference. Our schools keep similar classes through to high school before shuffling per subject, and then you still get to be with friends sometimes and during breaks. You call it castes because they're people in the same classes you get to know, but they're still friends you hang out with, so where's the issue?

There is an argument for consistent classes but there are also clear advantages to streaming them, since you get students learning at roughly the same pace, instead of some bored as shit and some super confused.

This is why I said he sounds like a guy who has no friends.

Normal people can make friends with their classmates. There's no reason to feel like your childhood friends are the only ones you should have, and being traumatically separated from them through education is a reason to damn the entire system.

There are plenty of ways the system is flawed, but that's hardly one of them.

No. There neither is nor was ever any reason to use Anki for two hours a day, period. That's an inefficient use of time. Cap reviews off at 300 and new words off at 20-25, or you're just gonna get incredibly diminished returns.

The dude should shadow the sentences, write the kanji down and look them up on jisho for reinforcement. I honestly think those stats mean you're losing more than you're gaining - at that point, overexposure is more harmful than anything.

it's choice 7 or so; it's the second day or something and the girl is talking about ghosts and stuff. there's three choices and they end in る う す from top to botton

I can't post a screenshot because my VN PC doesn't have an internet connection

>>
>>144110166
This is a good idea, using a walkthrough is for idiots who are too dumb to figure out a VN for themselves.

Have you tried radical search on Jisho or google translate handwriting to look up the kanji?
>>
>>144110444
Not yet, I was just complaining that I ran into a minor difficulty and hoped someone would spoonfeed me the plaintext of the options without asking for it, but I'm just going to manually look up the characters now
>>
>>144110444
Nobody is too dumb to trial and error choices but it's not worth the time to redo stuff to get to the route you want especially when some VNs have shitty skip mechanisms
>>
>>144110521
What I did when I was full EOP reading shitty translations was play through to a "real end" at least once, then look up the other routes. I would get onto each route with the walkthrough but not use it inside the routes until I beat each route at least once. If a given route has more than one ending I would consult the walkthrough for that particular route to get the other endings.
>>
>>144110490
Fucking lazy EOP
>>
>>144110521
Exactly. You're too dumb to understand the choices and the implications behind them based off context and figure it out like most people can, so you have to trial and error your way through them. Thanks for proving my point.
>>
>>144110571
He's not me, senpai, just dome idiot.
>>
>>144110571
You clearly haven't played very many VNs.

It's also not like most VNs have interesting enough choices for it to add to the experience
>>
>>144110490
It's worthwhile learning to use radical search on Jisho. It's actually really quick once you get used to it, it helps you pay attention to radicals when learning new kanji which in turn helps with remembering them, and for someone who hasn't done specific radical study it's a far more practical substitute for that.
>>
>>144110667
I actually played through the first two entire choices without a texthooker at all, using nothing but the sljfaq kanji lookup and handcrafting a dictionary suited for that early point in the game.
>>
>>144110658
I think it's clear you're the one who hasn't played many VNs here if you need a walkthrough or trial-and-error to play through your average VN. There are a few difficult ones but the vast majority I can go right through without any need for trial-and-error and finish easily.
>>
>>144110734
It only takes one failure to decide that the pride of choosing your own destiny is not worth the possible wasted time. It also saves skip time even if you accurately get on the correct routes, because you get to save just before the split at the last possible moment.

You nerds really need to find something more interesting to feel superior about. Like try getting good at japanese so you can brag about that or something.

Not that anon, but I wanted to say that the problem was never with the system in my opinion anyways. It was with the people under the system. They just aren't as hard working anymore because they're the new generation and do not understand failure is necessary. Rote-memorization works fairly well, can't go wrong with it, only can go wrong if people don't want to do it, but it builds discipline and discipline is the fastest track to improvement. Creative thought is just stupid, it's almost like you're pushing to drag people's attention, which you are because people these days can't focus for some reason. It might because of how information is blatant everywhere, but focus must be learned and the system can only enforce that by giving you opportunities in which you use focus. Discipline and focus are the key components to success and with those you can go far enough to build any other skill. The people who do not have those are likely a majority. After all, it's a guaranteed path to success, I believe, and the only person hold you back is yourself.
>>
>>144112676
Rote memorization is good but the american education system institutes lot of useless memorization.
>>
>>144112721
Have any examples? I, for one, can't really think of any. Of course, this is now, back then, I feel like every student was a rebel against the system and thought they were better than it which lead to them deciding certain things were useless or pointless. If people just followed along, it would pay off, but life is so distracting.
>>
>>144112859
How much of your highschool education was it actually worth memorizing?
>>
>>144112917
Well, that's a difficult question to answer since I can only remember what I remember. I would say it was all worth memorizing though for a certain reason that may not be agreeable with everyone. There also happened to be a part to the education system that disrupts your focus and therefore splits it. That can be friends, other interests, etc. But if you focused solely on education, you would know all of the building blocks to everything in life. A foundation of which you can build every other piece of information on. School is an important moment of life because of this. By having a strong foundation, it's likely to come with everything else good such as habits, thinking, etc. because it means that person would have to struggle with their own self until they also learned about their best self. With that, a person can go on to anything they want much easier because they have focused on the most important skills, the basics. The basics are definitely boring, hard and long, however, in the long run, they are essential.

>>144113337

>>
>>144112676
The system is meant to be changed to reflect the people under it. That's how it was intended, at least, and how it should be treated unless you're looking for totalitarianism. Keep it in /pol/.

>Creative thought is just stupid
Write something less laughable if you want to be heard. Even "creative thought is overvalued" would go over better than this shit.
Either way, I don't think it's useless or overvalued. Creative thought is the driving force behind any sort of unique personal quality that might set you apart from a manual worker. It's the driving force behind the middle class, which is where the standard k-12 + college track is going to put you, in theory.
For the record, it can only put you there because it DOES teach creative thinking through important skills like writing, reading, and math. You really can't apply rote memorization to those.
All the focus on rote memorization is frankly bullshit, and only exists because it's reinforced by the children going through the system due to societal pressure to get good grades. Because everybody is being pressured into it, everybody has to be able to do it, and so the system sticks with memorization. Anyone can memorize.
But focus and discipline can only go so far. On top of that, excessive focus and discipline are only going to become useful in doing more rote memorization. It's a short circuit.

I think individuality is seen too much as a need to the people nowadays. It allows a person to stand out from the crowd, but that's not important in majority of cases. Just do your job and all is fine with the world. You can't apply individuality to everything, if you did, there would be disorder and chaos. Manual workers are and will always be a necessity. Hopefully people who take those kind of jobs will know that individuality isn't important. You're a grunt worker. Act like one and work will be done. Don't go against the system. That halts progress and potentially wastes time. I know that the education system does focus on creative thought because it could potentially lead to breakthroughs and therefore propel the world exponentially in speed, but that was unfortunately a huge risk to be taking. If everyone was possible of an inventive thought, that would be a miraculous future. The results were not that though. Of course, I can also see that this system was just to really weed out the weak and build the strong. A win-win system. The winners keep winning and the loser keep losing. This way, those who had the potential would be found, but those who didn't would take a blow for the greater good, for the winners. With those who had potential moving on, the future at least could have more breakthroughs than it did before, but this is destructive to the system of building a foundation since it tried to apply advanced concepts before the basics were fully built. Now, creative thought, an advanced concept? Yes. You should be a mindless grunt worker through education since it's already filled with the necessities. You don't need creative thought to be leading you astray from everyone else and building individuality. That will lead to disaster. That's like trying to have everyone be a leader. Rote memorization at least has everyone on equal playing fields and those who out achieve will move on naturally. A focus on the core is more important than creativity.

>Manual workers are and will always be a necessity
everything a manual worker does can be (and often is) automated
that's essentially what it means to be a manual worker, a man with no apparent skill or attribute that can set him apart from any other man and get him a job in the middle class world

education is not a system to teach what you think are the "fundamentals"
you don't need education to teach somebody to be a grunt worker and you don't need education to be one
apart from that rote memorization doesn't teach jack shit and is a disposable piece of any school curriculum
that pointless grade-centric system stops once you reach higher education and this is reflected in that higher education is the only form of education that can raise your socioeconomic status
higher education has the capacity to give you actual skills: what you refer to as the "core" doesn't actually exist in practice and your version of "discipline" can be taught through a firm slap on the buttocks and doesn't require a rigorous k-12

anyway it's pretty clear you're missing something vital here, like the realization that self-actualization is the only thing that matters to being a human and everything else is just an effort to keep climbing the ladder so that one might eventually reach that step

I guess I will just be mocked but I just can't memorize the pronounciations of words. Especially since several words can share the same one. I have no trouble remembering the meanings. Sometimes I can connect the pronounciation to the Kanji or meaning but most of the times not.

I pronounce the word out loud. I imagine what that word describes while doing that. I even tried writing the pronounciation several times but it doesn't help.

Did anyone else suffer from the same problem and manage to overcome it? If so how?

How do I learn to write well? I've been able to read Japanese for ages, but my output is weak. I'm constantly asking myself questions like "Do these 語尾 give the impression I want to give?" or "Am I using が(but) too much? Should I mix it up more?" Even just tweeting in Japanese gives me anxiety.

In English I had teachers to give me writing assignments and point out when something sounded awkward, but that's obviously not an option for a self-teaching adult.

Well, the problem with practicing a shitload is that I still won't know whether I'm right or wrong.

I'm in my last year of University so it's a bit too late to go to Japan to study. I could try for JET I guess, but I'll probably be fucked when it comes to reference letters unless I really impress some professors next semester.

>>144122517
Even if he isn't a native his level is cosmic.
You most likely can't post there without buying "2ch pass" and even if you can, when they see your broken Japanese they will call you a fucking dirty Korean and tell you to fuck off. Japanese isn't exactly an international language like English.

Basically just the more experience you get the easier new cards become

Also a lot were idioms so I don't think there was a single thing where the pronunciation was hard, it was just to nail down the meanings more. 早合点(はやがてん) is a bit of a weird pronunciation but knowing 合点(がってん) makes it not too bad either

Easy way to make conflict since there will be misunderstandings and friction between the world and normal people. Also gives them a sense of mystery since you don't know exactly what they're thinking. I like Reina's character because once you get to know her she's actually pretty normal. And kind of a dork.

45%, and because it's just infuriating as fuck and takes so much time

I do it with the english keyword's on the front, and it's just annoying how many cards I get wrong simply due to the english keywords, either they're misleading because they're barely even related to the kanji, or there are two or more of them that are pretty much the same word and are ridiculously easy to mix up, or because they're words that haven't been used by anyone in a century

Is it normal to have a harder time learning カタカナ than ひらがな?
>>
>>144133257
Yes
>>
>>144133257
Not really. It might take you longer to master them because you don't see them as often, but neither is particularly hard.

I learned katakana by playing Fire Emblem 7 in Japanese. Since I already knew the character names from English, when I saw Erk I easily recognized what each character in エルク was.

He didn't really say either was hard, just that kata is harder than hira, which I'd say is true, one because kata is used way less often like you said, but also because there are a lot more similar looking katakana characters, they lack diversity compared to hiragana

Eh. There are only four characters I'd say that applies to. ツシソン are hard, but ぬ and め are far more similar than say, ヌ and ク.

Though personally when learning I found similarities more helpful than harmful. "Oh right this is just that other one but with an extra line here"

It's always obvious through context which it is though, even more so than other similar characters, since the long vowel is only ever used around katakana

The problem isn't that you can't figure it out the problem is that it fucks you up when reading so you have to move back a little bit.
