I initially thought the author was pulling a fast one by making us think the empire was just sending useless troops to their death as a way of gauging the JSDF's abilities before employing their magic casters to devise countermeasures. It was gonna be a whole Tech VS Magic arms race centered between reverse engineering the other side's weapons and fielding more effective tactics to counteract this. I was optimistic.

their magic is more than just creating fireball with a word and having no control about it afterwards, they can at least to a extent freely control that energy, the possiblities opened through that allow for a really variable kind of use, even for the civillians in their daily life but nope the empire doesnt think about that at all.

But pretty sure none of them had shown wizards actively trying to research stuff, so where did they introduce their magic research?
All i saw was some wizard and his female apprentice, as well some lesser mages acting as bandits or what it was.

Scout troops, was just one of the things i meant, it is like this, they see the jdf army creating a base, they know the place, they know where that army moves and so on.
What for possiblities offers that: inflitration, assasination and not of those pansies who see 'oh how good the army treats the people here, i will join them' but coldblooded murders who are trained to do that, you dont send elements in who betray you at next moment.

As much as you want the empire to be Eberron, it isn't. Magic in this world is the explodey type. The mage's college is like a big bunker to control the collateral damage.

I liked the premise, but it became increasingly clear that all I was watching were the main army slaughtering the enemy. Also, the MC lacked a real personality and was really nice and strong. It was becoming apparent that I was watching an anime about a Gary Stu. It should have been apparent by the fact that the army and dragons in the fantasy realm were always getting BTFO by the JIDF and weren't really putting up a fight even though I was more than half way through the show.

It was a great premise gone bad.

I started watching it because I was hoping for science and magic constantly one-upping each other on equal terms by using their strengths to exploit what the other one lacks.

Pretty good until the prince arc, in this fucking world were there's magic and dragons and basically unknown god-like powerful shit like Loli bismuth I was expecting a genuine clash between the people there and nips, This blonde asswipe taking over the empire and basically being all smug and shit was the perfect opportunnity to throw a third nuke at japan, it actually looks as if everything is building to that climax, to prince guy planning and succeding in facing off against bullets (just like Rory shat over an entire military unit) and tanks with some magic shit, Instead what do we get?

manga good, anime bad.

setting is good for thought. Many possibilities in the hfy and technology gap aspects, they kind of cock tased some of the topics I enjoy that being morality, philosophy, military tactics, politics, but it's devolved into elf tits and magic in the later chapters.

I like gate because it's food for thought, a lot fo the situations due to the nature of the premise and setting are more than not have me considering and thinking about the many ways things could have gone.

I wish there were a western science fiction or fantasy like this, written by someone like arthur c clarke.

I think we can all agree manga is and forever will be the best.

I didn't watch the anime (only read the LN translations), but:

Did they ever catch the Piper?
Did Pina get raped?

I feel like the people who are disappointed with the one-sidedness of the war between the JSDF and the Empire are mistaken in assuming that it's supposed to be the "main conflict".

The war's just the setting; I mean, if you had the colonization of the new world as a setting, you wouldn't complain about the OP-ness of Conquistadors compared to Aztecs, right? Even if you make magic real to add to the feeling of fantasy, it shouldn't change the fundamental nature of the setting.

That's why I think the "Main Conflict" isn't supposed to be the war, but the political struggles on both sides of it. The protagonists are the ones who want to end the bloodshed without the people of the Special Region being totally overwhelmed the way the Native Americans were, while the antagonists are mainly bullheaded imperials who don't understand the power gap and greedy politicians who certainly do.

Impossible. They don't even have the tools they'd need to take a modern rifle apart properly, let alone manufacture a new one. And even if they started making hand cannons right away, they'd be inferior to their regular bows and crossbows in every respect.
