The problem was that they spent a significant art the advertising campaign pretending that she was the heroine and significant (they were even selling statues of her, and showing pre-release foortage of her being present for boss fights she isn't available for in the final game). And then she turned out to be some literally who that doesn't really matter to anything, and when the DLC story was announced it was clear that the whole character existed as a bait and switch to make people want to spend more money.

That's the core of it. They created an artificial problem to sell DLC. You could argue that something happened with Flynn, but Flynn was at least still important to the story and Yuri's character. Alisha is just nothing.

She didn't fit the story very much as she's more about human politics than killing monsters. Also she doesn't leave the game entirely, she pops back a couple of times and becomes playable again for a bossfight, then later turns up with an allied army to help you kill a dragon.

Honestly, I was more annoyed by MGS2's bait-and-switch and came to appreciate that one in the end. I ended up liking Rose, so I guess it worked.

The real problems with kicking out Alisha was thus, besides Sorey, Mikleo and Alisha are really the only empathetic playable characters, the rest of them are very apathetic. this especially includes Rose. Who for all her "mood making" comes across as little more than a sociopath. The problem was that when shit hit the fan you didn't have enough characters who would react accordingly, and the apathetic ones tended to overpower the empathetic ones, so the scenes had less impact.

Also a problem with elitism and general group dynamic, because you had too many cold characters, with the exception of Sorey and Mikleo, the group always seemed as though they were holding each other at arm's length and never really allowing each other and the gamer to get close to them. And that elitism mean that they would never allow people in that easily and only served to isolate the party even more.
