Of the 46 winning stories listed on the "Net Novel Prize" contest's website, 14 have "alternate world" directly in the title. The 1st place Grand Prix prize, which included publication of the story and 1,000,000 yen (about $9925.80 USD), was won by a story about traveling to an alternate world titled, "The Chronicle of the Male Virgin Who Travels to the Alternate World Chiirem [cheat + harem] and Gains Healing Magic."

The fucking problem is not isekai itself
it's that fuckers almost never created any worthwhile or creative world. it's all fucking same races and culture you can pull from any generic RPG on the market.
Not to mention the mc also in many novel has a fucking game system to abuse with his special snowflake power. DUH EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT A GAME GOTTA ADD HP BAR AND SKILL TREES MATE.
And the characters, oh my gods all females are rather fucking cunts that dare to oppose our mc, or fucking useless sluts leaking fluid every time she smells some MC's breath (despite the fact that she was strong, smart, or queen or whatever before joining mc harem)

I'm hoping you haven't watched/read Alderamin, because it isn't isekai in any way. It's just normal fucking fantasy - there is one world, every character is born in it and stays in it forever, that world is just different from the real one and has magic and shit.
>>
>>143954179
Around last year was when we started getting anime adaptations so probably a bit earlier than that was when every middleschooler realized they could "just use the same fantasy setting that all the RPGs and other LNs use by using this one simple plot device!".
>>
>>143954213
>And I used to think magical school battle harems were the worst.

>Now instead, people have decided to ruin the fantasy genre, and you literally can't have one without insane harem horseshit.
They are ruining nothing. There is still fantasy out there and if they were not making these, they would not be making "good" fatnasy, they would be making whatever sells.

You just have to watch anime instead of complaining.

They're both bad, we just happen to have more of Isekai at the moment. School setting battle harem in a contemporary fantasy setting is only slightly less lacking in terms of creativity, which it usually makes up for by cranking the garystu up a notch.

The problem is that battle harems and isekais are too easy to write.

>>143954586
True enough, but it's very easy to fall into the same cookie cutter trap that every isekai turns into. I'm sure that it's possible to have lots of isekais that are extremely interesting but if going with a loser harem mc that falls into a video game world still earns big bucks, why bother innovating?

I bet with a battle harem or isekai setting, everyone on /a/ should already be able to throw out the same half-baked story.

They're just too easy to use, like fast food; cheap, delicious and at some point everyone realises it's not healthy but continues eating the shit anyway.

The question is, is there a reverse?

Has there been a setting that somehow, everyone writes differently?

I know it's a really strange, specific idea to find such a setting but maybe reading this, some anon might realise something.

This is a web novel contest, though.

Majority of web novel authors if not all of them are people who got rejected from actual publishers and mainly third rate publishers later pick them up like AlphaPolis that buys up almost every web novel they can get their hands on these days and they are known to send DMCAs.

AlphaPolis also likes telling the author to shut down their web novel or remove all the chapters and just provide summary teasers instead.

You know something's wrong with the industry when KyoAni LN entries sound more interesting than any of the novels in this contest.

I will say, although its ultimately unofficial and personal, I find isekai stories that seem more /tg/ related end up being better then those that are just borrowing from JRPGs and shit. Konosuba seems very much like a tabletop game, for example. Dungeon Meshi is also another candidate. I dunno, maybe its just because they illicit a different take to fantasy worlds, but I think they generally are and preform much better then standard MMO shit.

Non-fiction English books often have descriptions attached to the title. I heard that was becoming typical because it's optimized to show results on search engines. Someday we in the west will once again return to naming our fiction like "The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates."

It was already famous online before it was picked up for publication. Those long names are from small time authors who got desperate and tried to be recognised by having eye catching titles.

Gatoh of FMP and Amagi didn't like it either, but that's really just a case of marketing creeping into the book title.

This is not a Japanese phenomenon.

I work in the editing industry in the USA. Female authors, especially romance and young adult, are suffering from the same.

Romance novels for women now are not what it they were in the 20th century. Those were full of actual main characters, think Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind.

Now it is the same shit as isekai. I get the same fucking queries every goddamn week.

It's largely it in spirit, though I'd agree, as terrible as it is, it's not quite as cancerous as full blown isekai.

It just hits the most cancerous check boxes: has super nerdy skill that, in this new world, makes him an awesome god and he gets tons of girls falling over his dick. Which is all anyone really cares about when it comes to shitting on isekai. They could all be time travel themed, and people would still hate them. The being "trapped in another world" part is largely ancillary to their problems.

None of this is anything new, anyway. Isekai only gets singled out nowadays because it's become so absurdly checklist it's hard not to notice them all.

Yes, the self insert romance and erotica is extremely pervasive in the big companies and the self-published. I guess Water for Elephants did break standards in every way, being both self published but not self insert, but those are one in a million.

I don't know why the sudden obsession for self insert came to be. This is happening in high fantasy novels written by men too.

It isn't necessarily a Millennial thing either. I don't know why the popularity has skyrocketed.

MC became a girl who has an extreme elf fetish but the female elf he likes isn't lesbian so he got friendzoned and can no never go past first base.

Also, in Tilea's Worries, MC accidentally makes the Bad Guys defeat the Good Guys and a shitload of innocent people actually die and we, readers, have to accept innocent people or the heroes on the human's side dying because MC accidentally fought on the bad guy's side.

Rather, the Isekai aspect of Grimgar isnt even needed, just give some random people amnesia and you get the same result.

Exactly, that part is what qualifies as the hated part of Isekai, but it's not Kazuma getting a cheat. He DOESN'T get a cheat, that's the entire point. He gets a damegami. His cheat is his modern world common sense and disillusionment of the situation leading him to treat it as real life instead of "oh I'm the hero now time to sword things".

This is the exact same shit that Shieldbro played straight in exchange for the MC having cheats. Imagine if Shieldbro didn't have the shield. How long do you think he could have realistically lasted? Keep in mind he fucking lasted an average of 5 days or so in the gaiden because Motoyasu carebeared him.

The first isekai was Alice in Wonderland.

He doesn't have infinite luck stat. We know his luck stat even secondaries know the outdated numbers stop making shit up.

Infinite luck would not give him trouble, infinite luck would make him a god from the start. Stop exaggerating like an idiot. Someone like Saitama has magnitudes of greater luck and even he has 'troubles'.

I never said whether or not the series was good or bad, I just said he doesn't have a cheat. You are just saying MUH PLOT ARMOR IS A CHEAT which could apply to literally every single main character that doesn't die horribly within the first half of a story featuring mortal combat.

Just admit it, your feelings overload whenever posting about isekai elements that inherently trigger you making you no different than /pol/ talking about niggers.

And its come to a point that any book-novel related website don't even talk or even promote male authors anymore unless they are already mainstream and their lead is a "strong" female. Look it up anon. But the gist of it was the abnormally low rate for a limited character back during new years. After people rolled away yen equivalent to about thousands and thousands of dollars trying to get her, they compiled their data together and figured out just how absurdly ridiculously low it is, much much lower than other characters of the same rarity.

As a result, new laws were passed forcing companies to show the actual success rates of getting certain characters or items or whatever rather than keeping it a secret. It affected some MMOs too, like PSO2.

Just that women yearn for handsome Fabio descended from heavens in form of [insert setting-appropriate job] that yes, thinks she is the angel of his life, most beautiful princess despite lack of luck in relationships that leads to bodices ripping by said Fabio; here, young male demographic want a success story in a world where effort is rewarded and they're a step above grey masses(cheat), unlike real world, and they're accepted(harem) for/despite who they were in life.

Every girl in this fucking novel is a slut.
the two girls on the cover are actually part of another guys harem.
the 2 chicks have a threesome with the other knight.
the blonde chick then falls in love with tanaka but tanaka knew she was fucking the knight like a slut all the time and he only likes virgins so
he declined her when she spread her legs for him.
then the blonde girl lost her memory and reset and joined the knights harem again.
There's a lesbian knight and a lesbian princess.
another super omega milfy slut bitch.
And the mc likes a maid who in turn likes the knight with the harem (probably gonna get fucked later)
the amnesia blonde wants to 'elope' with the knight but the knight refuses saying she originally loves tanaka and said that after she regains her memory he will win her back.
the blondes father forced the other purple haired slut who always fucks the knight to become tanakas fiance
but heck in the end tanaka always comes across the non virgin blonde (and sometimes the lesbians) over and over again.
And tanaka has a deep deep desire, he wants to be reverse raped by the blonde (and others i think).
so his first wish is to make himself look younger.

In that season there was like 8 of them beside these two there was one about magic guns and hunting mages, one about guy in school for rich girls, one with angels and demons and extra lewd, one about post apocalyptic homo vampires, that horrendous loli show, I don't remember the rest but that still better than same old fantasy sometimes with game elements.

Why can't they just write a story about Not!Marche who gets disenfranchised with the fantasy world pretty quickly and then is willing to burn it all down to get back home.

I'm still waiting for an MMO story that goes full bore on how ridiculous MMO's can get. None of this "focus on a single hero" crap, I'm talking all sorts of dumb social and political drama driven by the fact that it's also just a fucking game so people are even less inclined to hold back on the bullshit. I'm talking EVE levels of hilarious intersections of human error and lack of giving a shit. Like someone clicking the wrong button and starting the biggest fight the game's ever seen or a guy pretending to be a banker for years so he can steal everyone's money, use it to buy a super awesome ship, put a huge bounty on his own head, and basically becoming a super villain complete with releasing a video of him shitting on everyone for letting him pull this crap.

Add in all the stupid mechanics of MMO's and the exploits to just fly across maps and get places you're not supposed to be, and I think it could be something wonderful. Imagine an arc where some status breaks out like a virus and just fucks everyone over for a bit. A few series have done bits and pieces of this idea, toying with the way MMO mechanics work in a world, but they always seem to hew closer to trying to be a "real world with some oddities" rather than an actual MMO.

Also, Cassandra best girl.
>>
I just wish we could have actual fantasy shows in a medieval setting instead of "stuck in an MMO."

You should see the LN bookshelves in stores in Akiba. Endless corridors of magic battle academy or isekai harem novels. Last time I went to one (about a year ago) there were literally hundreds of those and that was just a small section of the tightly packed LN area.

All you can do is have the most pandering title and the most appealing girls on the cover because the entire market's sole purpose is to appeal to a very base desire for escapism, and that's all that the customers are looking for.

The only thing I know that comes close to exploits and people doing shits and giggles like in MMO is pic related.

This is mostly because the game the series is set in is Overlord's Yggdrassil tier customization, and the developers of the game are bringing the NPC/Lore/Game to actual life while people fuck around in it.

You can also do some broke shit if you're smart enough and the Mc just spends his time gathering shit to sell like a jew.

21. Not even that long ago we had LNs like Kino no Tabi, Boogiepop, Slayers, Spice and Wolf, Full Metal Panic, The Twelve Kingdoms, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, Zaregoto, Banner of the Stars and the cool one with the panther-head guy and the little twins, which in turn produced good manga/anime adaptions too.

Now it's all chuuni isekai narou crap.

Sword Art Online, Re: Zero, Mondaiji-tachi, Maou no Hajimekata, Konosuba, GATE, Himekishi no Classmate, Mushoku Tensei, Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu, Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou, No Game No Life, Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken, Overlord, Kumo Desu ga Nani ka?, Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, Log Horizon, World Customize Creator, Tsuyokute New Saga, The New Gate, Yuusha Party, Hero BBS, Spirit Migration, Ore to Kawazu-san no Isekai Hourouki, Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku, Isekai Tensei Soudouki, Konjiki no Moji Tsukai, Shisen no Shoukanshi, Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki, Chihou Kishi Hans no Junan, Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, Kenja no Mago, Kuro no Iyashi, Koushaku Reijou no Tashinami, Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu, Gun-Ota, Sayounara Ryuusei Konnichiwa Jinsei, Re:Monster, Kouritsu Kuriya Madoushi, even Maybe joined the isekai bandwagon with Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari.

Look at all this GARBAGE pile of series with identical premises and tropes. If anything, the standards are getting worse. The only really good ongoing isekai is Drifters.
>>
>>143965938
Mushoku Tensei relatively new and is just part of the trend as far as I am concerned but you can kinda blame it for every newly minted work after it gained popularity.

The cycle is this
1 popular thing has a trope and people like it
2 writers write that thing cause it is on their minds or they think they can do better
3 some of those writers are good and their works rise top popularity (getting officially published or if they are really popular they get manga and anime)
4 those works are noticed by writers and the cycle starts again

It wasn't just a single series and that is suddenly exploded or anything like that. The different templates and formula's kept changing, building up on Narou untill they were somewhat stabilised by the popular series. It doesn't have much to do with SAO.
You have :
Goblin Kingdom-One of the first monster reincarnation types(That Re:Mosnter basically copied but took it in a different direction)

In 2009 you had series like Shiro No Koukoku Monogatari popping up which were basically the first reincarnation series, and also used lots of elements from the senki series(War/politics) Its also somewhat similar to them.

Kenkyo Kenjitsu(The most popular one)/Otome reincarnation types.

The standard class/single person transfer ones like Kuro No Maou, Isekai Meikyuu no Saishinbu wo Mezasou with MC having to struggle and suffer.

Settings similar to Mushoku Tensei(Which is basically a 'Story of mc's life, from his birth to his death' type where he later on marries/has kids/struggles to protect his family etc) This series definitely made similar settings very popular and there were many series and are even now that somewhat try to copy its formula.
But that formula itself is not really used that much. Very few stories want to literally grow their MC and they usually don't focus on aging aspect and fail. Series like Bocchi Tenseiki for example that leave the MC as a kid or ones like Sayonara Ryuusei Konnichiwa Jinsei that basically skip to adulthood.

You also have the ones with Kingdom Restoration/town/village management ones that people have been recently getting into like Genjitsushugisha no Oukokukaizouki, Seiun wo Kakeru(very different types still)

There also stuff likeレジェンド(Legend) That mainly focus on adventures and only adventures that can sometimes make them a little boring. There are shit tons of Dungeons Managment series as well,

You also sometimes find the Unique/unusual types like Daraku No ou, Isekai Tensei Soudouki(To some extent).

As incredibly fake as that could possibly be, what with being posted a month after the other one, the sheer idea of it is just so delicious I'm surprised there aren't more things like this in fantasy stories, especially RPG inspired ones. There are a lot of absolutely great /tg/ stories about character doing crazy or terrifying shit that even if they aren't actually things that happened, they're still incredible reads on their own. There's a story about an evil party where one of them didn't seem to be evil and even looked like he was setting up a cute little girl to make the team slightly more good aligned, only to casually slit her throat one day. There's one about a necromancer obsessed with perfecting his cheese industry in minute detail.

I dunno. There's tons of these amusing stories, everything from plain crazy bullshit to honestly entertaining stories of human drama. They probably read better because they're just short, condensed things. And there's a reason everyone is an idea guy and there's so few writers comparatively. It just feels like we're getting shafted here on the actual stories end of the field.
