It's actually one of the better shonen, but it does have really weak lows. Avoid the anime at all costs

It's one of the better battle shounen, but it has its low moments as well.
If you have nothing else to do, just casually read it and see if you want to invest more time in it.
But considering how many chapters you'd have to catch up, I wouldn't say it's worth it.
Don't even consider watching it, only try reading.

Honestly, IMO it's the best manga ever written. Wonderful adventure, characterisation, passion from the author, and a spirit of romance.

Toei destroyed the adaptation's pacing, only the severely autistic would recommend it. Manga is enjoyable.

I ended up reading the manga because after enjoying DW8/E on PC I wanted another Musou and apparently the OP one was pretty good, so I decided to "speedread" the manga before playing it.

It took me multiple NEETweeks, but it was honestly a lot better than I expected. I usually abhor battle shounen shit, but OP had some surprisingly great moments, as well as a general feeling of fun adventure that reminds me of how much I enjoyed early Dragon Ball as a kid.

I think what impressed me the most is how well thought out it is. In most long running shounen manga you can tell the author didn't really plan anything beyond the first couple of arks, which often results in him having to come up with some bullshit on the spot week after week to keep everything going forever. However, despite its massive length, OP never makes any particularly glaring misstep, and never resorts to any dumb asspulls. Its light hearted feel also helps it avoid any edgy darkness nonsense (nardo). It has its low moments as others have said (sometimes entire arcs just kinda fall flat, which is made worse by the fact that most of them feel relatively pointless in the grand scheme of things), but it was still a surprisingly enjoyable read.

Is it worth the huge amount of time it takes to read/catch up, though? Probably not. Multiple weeks of reading a never ending battle shounen for a few amazing moments and a general sense of "this really isn't as bad as I expected" is probably too much to ask.
