Not to be melodramatic about it but yeah, while I loved handa-kun a ton and the manga made me laugh my ass off many times, I honestly ended up feeling bad for Handa and kind of felt like Kawafuji was a dick.

A lot of it is hilarious gag material but in the end Handa's an anxious guy that has poor social skills and feels no guys would want to be his friend and no girl would ever want to date him.

It makes sense that he turns into a very sensitive and arrogant person as he is at the beginning of Barakamon ,he's prideful and closed off and loses himself in calligraphy.

To outsiders, Handa seems to be surrounded with friends but Handa actually believes everyone is just pitying him even until highschool graduation and his so called friends continually reinforce this mistaken belief of Handa by never actually correcting it.

The author tried to play this off as a humorous gag but it is pretty twisted if you think about it.

Leave the black comedy and dark humor to SZS's author because when you try to turn a joke into a serious condition that heavily affects a character to the detriment of their entire life, it doesn't feel funny anymore.

It just feels like the author is bullying Handa in a malicious way.

I like it for what it is but it's certainly not what I expected or hoped for. It feels like a completely different anime that has nothing to do with Barakamon.

Their decision to go for this instead of a true successor to Barakamon baffles me. Most people who watch the first episode want loli comedy and some soul searching.

I haven't watched/read Barakamon but decided to give this a try since I'm not watching many shows this season and it was shit.

The meta part not only is unfunny but also way longer than it should be, the main part has some funny bits but this whole "super popular and super dense MC" gets old really fast, especially when he has to carry the show because the rest of the cast only exist to tell you how awesome is the MC.

I wanted to like this because I liked Sensei in Barakamon, but god this first episode was so bland.
The meta-humour part in the beginning was just annoying, it was like spending 9 minutes trying to tell a joke which doesn't even have a punchline.
The part where he mistakes everyone's admiration for bullying wasn't very convincing either, it's like every character exists for the sole purpose of sucking Handa's dick. I know that it's pretty much the whole point of the series, but it gets boring after a while.
Hopefully the next episodes will be better.
