Basic but interesting moral dilemma.
Establishes rules early on so readers can follow and when something is used succesfully or if it fails, it feels deserved instead of cheap like a deus ex machina would.
Charismatic main characters, as well as mostly charismatic side characters.
Misa adds unpredictability and a possibility of failing, adding tension and pressure to Light's plans.
Great art that conveys the tone, great music in the anime that brings an air of dread and mystery.
Comedy comes from its seriousness, but it's definitely on purpose.

I just finished watching death note tv drama and it was pretty god. They made it into a new experience while being faithful to the original plot and twists, I fucking loved this new L, it's just like the old one but toned down his autism and made him smug ad fuck. Even light started as a beta and wanted full Kira mode with time.
