It gets worse once you find out what he was thinking last episode when he was asking what happened to Rem after he found all the village people dead.

If you pay attention he tries to say Emilia, and then stops and asks about Rem, subtitles got that part wrong since if you stop to listen you can clearly hear him say "Emi-".

Pretending to not see the malice in his heart, Subaru lied to himself.

Basically Subaru prefers to imagine what happened to Rem than to dare imagine what may have happened to Emilia.

He's an extremely flawed person, if that falls under realistic i don't know, some of his reactions to certain situations make sense, like the shock from finding the village people all brutally killed, and his delusion of wanting to prove Emilia wrong, by saving her from this situation once he knew something was happening at the mansion. He gives this creepy smile where he probably thinks about the idea of having her become grateful to him again, and basically prove that she was wrong.

Well yeah, he's extremely flawed, and his inner workings and intentions start leaning more and more towards selfish manipulation and less giving a fuck about what others think of him.
But that, in my opinion, makes sense for a person who keeps dying over and over and just resets back in time. All the work he does, all the friends he makes, and all the memories he shares with people are less and less something he can hold on to, as it keeps being taken away from him.

He's flawed, but his flaws make sense and are mostly explainable by his situation.
Does he doe everything right? Absolutely not. Is he a likeable guy once you see his inner workings? Absolutely not.
But he's believable, and that's a lot more than most characters in anime have going for them.

Both of them were completely right from their own perspectives. Subaru has sacrificed a lot, he died many times just to keep her alive and on top of that, way back in the original timeline Emilia was the one who helped him out which is why hes so obsessed. Obviously he can't tell her about any of the things hes done besides the current timeline which has pretty much been "random stranger helps girl for seemingly no reason and risks his life doing it" which is why she understandably acted cold to him when he told her she doesn't know just how grateful she should be, she has literally no memories of what hes done and she never will, she acted pretty realistically, but then so did Subaru.

I think the real issue is that when he dies he has loses the emotional bonds he builds with people. That is not something that you can redo over and over. Moments where he pours his heart out to others are lost and in order to reforge those bonds he has to open his heart again and again.

I'm really glad the story went this route because simply killing yourself to restart is a mark of a sociopath. I mean whats the point in even trying to connect with others if its just going to disappear. With that said he doesn't know if he will die but at least he's trying to connect with people and not close himself off from others.

Also arc 2 was rife with these occurrences with him literally breaking down and crying in Emilia's lap. That must have been so weird to everyone else. He said he was trying so hard but they had know idea what he really meant by that. He tried so hard to connect with Rem, Ram and Emilia. The fact that he placed great value on those bonds is what makes it endearing.

More importantly when in arc 1 when Emilia saved him that was a very meaningful moment for Subaru. That someone saved a worthless person like himself at their own detriment. That moment is gone now never to be known again other than by Subaru. That's why I like Re:Zero, some of the tension is traded for literal drama and suffering.

There needs to be a spinoff that illustrates Subaru's story from an outside perspective and how strange he must look to an outside observer. The words and moments that seem strange and innocuous, the awkwardness and cringe suddenly has so much meaning if someone could only see what led him there what his words truly meant.
