Oh, thanks anime for reminding me how much of an asspull this win was.

I understand the MC has to win, but even by the writing's own logic there's no reason why Souma should've won.

>>
>>143792772
he mostly won because alice fucked up big time if that makes sense
>>
>>143795549
Alice lost because cold technicality applied to comfort food robs it of life. She was blinded by the science of it and forgot what a bento really meant. It's a lesson she needed to learn early and to the best of my memory it's an error she doesn't repeat again, so this was more about her remembering that cooking isn't all about the science than it was Souma winning. Alice comes out of this a better chef and a stronger force in the kitchen than when she went into it, though it's a pity she had to learn it as a loss to Souma as opposed to just observing Ryou in how to cook with passion.
>>
She lost because of the way the author says, it's easy to understand: She lost because it wasn't as true and good to the theme of 'bento' as Souma's, it could have been a sushi theme and it would have fit just as well
>>
>>143796124
Anime only fag here, but it looks like Ryou and Poo in Loo are going to be the big antagonists this season. But isn't Ryou supposed to be Alice's subordinate?

I guess then it makes sense for Alice to be knocked out so early on a pure technicality, they probably need to "save" her as an antagonist for later.
>>
>>143795549
>>143796124
>>143796229
The author's presented logic: she didn't push forward what makes bento special. Something along those lines, whatever.

Anyway how the fuck did she not? It was an amazing, innovative dish. Souma's was just a bento that tasted good.
>>
>>143796229
Exactly. All she essentially did was make food, put it in a box, and call it a bento.

She fucked up right from the beginning by misinterpreting the theme.
>>
>>143796375
It was a neat dish, but at its core it was just sushi in a box. Souma's dish was a bento at its core, you couldn't really make it any other way.
>>
>>143796323
>they probably need to "save" her as an antagonist for later.
She was never really an antagonist. A rival at best.
>>
>>143796375
I was a great dish. But it wasn't a bento.

Souma made a good bento.

Souma won almost by default.
>>
thought curryfag was knocked out fast because he's literally ONLY good at curry

i mean i guess for India he'd be a great chef, but they expect more than "muh 36 spices" to become TOP CHEF
>>
>>143796442
This, like Senzaemon said, had the theme been sushi, she would have served the same dish. It's a bit embarrassing since her cousin had just been lecturing her opponent about bento too.

I've always supposed that we were meant to chalk some of it up to Alice moving to Europe at a young age and losing touch with s1of her Japanese roots.
>>
>>143796703

The fuck are you talking about?
>>
I'm disappointed with how this was executed in the anime. They skipped all of the build up to the match which made it lose the suspense that the manga had. Even the Shokugeki against Ikumi had two episodes and that was way less significant than one against Alice.

They should have spent one or two episodes on building up hype for the match against Alice.
>>
>>143793888
How would Hotaru be and fare in the Shokugekiverse?
>>
>>143796375
>Anyway how the fuck did she not? It was an amazing, innovative dish

But it wasn't a Bento. If you tell a 4 year old and Da Vinci to draw a flower, and the 4 year old draws a flower while Da Vinci draws a river, the 4 year old wins no matter what cause he actually did what they said. They told Alice to make a Bento, something that can be taken around and eaten on the go or at work/school. Something exciting, fun, and nostalgic. She presented them a fucking air ball containing an open box and sushi in it. she had no way of winning.
>>
>>143797262

She's pursuing his dad because she once tasted one of his homemade dagashi, and it left her insatiably hungry for another hit of the VILE taste.

Souma has to please her by giving her an equally addictive dagashi

Cardboard.

You can cut out any panel in the manga with Megumi in her signature pose and paste it over another one of her panels, and nothing would change.

Tsukada realized his mistake of giving a boring blob so much screentime early in the manga and now he can't really drop her completely. His solution for the past 80 chapters was to have Tosh occasionally draw her in the background with her mouth wide open in that pose with 1 line of forgettable dialogue. They don't even try to hide it.

They're not antagonists, they're "worthy rivals". In manga they actually start hanging out together after the tournament, and Alice totally drops her cold side and starts acting friendly towards Souma.

I have a feeling that we won't see the actual big bad this season, and probably never (if they don't do S3). I wasn't even sure in S2, because they dropped some very important plot twist from the curry stage.

The hilarious part is that everyone who'd watched actual cooking shows like Top Chef was predicting the cause of Alice's loss weeks in advance. Ignoring the match's theme in favor of showing off their technical skills is something molecular gastronomy specialists are infamous for. They turn in some beef flavored foam that's been flash frozen into a wafer placed delicately on top of a cracker when the assignment was to do a damned hamburger.
>>
>>143796733
The funny thing about the bento discussion is that Erina basically ignore its origins as a common luncbhbox to criticize him for his lack of knowledge on its worldwide popularity.

Also, this is a "gourmet/haute" tournament and yet the prelim theme was curry...

I believe is her usual pose; however, her arms were forced apart by the wind pressure. Normally, humans run with their arms moving in the opposite direction of each other. Just look at Souma for a direct side by side comparison.

Of course, there is a split second where the arm position is the same relative to the y-axis, and the possibility of Tosh drawing her in that really awkward position is not zero. But they seem to be a bit high for that moment where the arms meet up.

She has not adopted a running stance, and is in her usual pose. Perhaps she is mid transition. That is my verdict.

I do not think it is particularly inconceivable that Souma would win this one. In fact, you could say he has a huge advantage-- bento is very far removed from Alice's realm of haute cuisine and modernist instruments. Alice's dish was very well received, but the big critique of it is pretty poignant-- she could have made the same thing if the theme was sushi.

Alice's approach was flawed from the beginning. Rather than exploring the theme and pushing the limits of the theme with her skill, she went to the limits of her skill and tried to fit it into the theme. It was not even a proper bento. Meanwhile Souma began with the concept of bento and explored it to the best of his ability.

So this was not an ass pull. The candy thing was also not particularly important-- he could have used any number of surprises in his bento and probably still would have won. Alice may have made the better dish, but she did not make the better bento.
>>
>>143814270
WE NEURO NOW
>>
>>143792772

It wasn't as much asspull as it was jobbing on the highest level.

Alice was lauded as master chef 5 star genius whatever with gastronomical skills and knowledge of ingredients, and her loss was because "she didn't make a real bento". By most standards, Souma would have been gutted in a normal match.
>>
>>143816186
If the point of the competition is to make the best bento, and you make a dish that's only a bento in a "kind of" way, then yes, you are going to lose.

Alice lost because of her hubris. This isn't hard to grasp.
>>
>>143816305
People just can't accept that Souma actually worked a way to innovate the way Bento is eaten while Alice just refined what Bento was. They also ignore the fact that Souma's idea actually lasts quite a while longer while retaining more quality whereas Alice's is reliant on the mist and that is very hard to keep contained within the package she presented. She didn't even use some technobabble to flood the box with mist, she just covered it with a dome.

How easily can you carry that fucking dome shaped bento box around? The dome covered more than the entire bento itself, so the purpose of the bento is already gone.

If she found a way to retain the cold temperature within the box itself without the need for a dome, it would be a pure bento, bonus points if it lasted as long as Souma's.
>>
>>143816305

She did, but it's a far too overused way of letting a character defeat an otherwise superior opponent. Considering how she was hyped up, being defeated on what is more of a technicality stings.

That doesn't matter. Cooking is not some pure objective one path trumps all narrow minded subject. The entire point of honing your cooking is so that you can deliver what the customer wants to the best of your ability while still retaining your individuality and creativity.

The entire manga has been showing this over and over and over, and yet you people just don't get it. Alice didn't cook for people, she just made a dish she deemed very high quality. She had no consideration for others, and that was why Megumi's cooking was compared to Alice's earlier because it's literally what she lacked at that point. She didn't care for the person who ate, she just cared about MUH GASTRONOMY.

Souma's dish with a bento encompassed all that even if his technical skill put into the box was lower. He utilized the box itself, while Alice literally failed the box component because the mist is impossible to retain within the box itself.

So tell me, how the fuck did she not fail? What good is a bento that requires you to put it on top of a silver platter then cover it with dome after injecting some ice mist into it? How the hell are you gonna bring that with you to work?

You can't, so she failed. Her design wouldn't even be able to last very long and just achieves the minimum requirements set by the theme, and only by technicality. In practice you would never buy a fucking bento box like that even at a high class shop because the moment you walk out of the shop you only have the box itself. On a hot summer it's basically useless.

There is no excuse for this, and not one person on /a/ has ever made a proper excuse for it despite that chapter happening ages ago. Most of you people didn't even pay attention and notice such a glaring error.

Isn't Soma's entire schtick that he believes even a simple, rustic meal can be made into a delicacy? Isn't that why he always comes out on top?
This is actually accurate to what´s happening in France ever since about the 60s. Even haute cuisine restaurants have to a large extent abandoned cuisine classique for nouvelle cuisine, a style which focuses on simplicity over pompousness and takes inspiration from regional "peasant" dishes.

I wouldn't say there isn't a possibility, but personally I'm betting that Rindou has an edge outside of strictly cooking kinda like Erina with her tongue tasting, Mimasaka with his copy, or Eizan with his business skills. She was the only elite 10 we know of to not cook during the festival and instead just go around eating everything right?

The fact that she deigned to eat at every stall instead of just the top tier ones might imply that she views food the same way Jouichirou and Souma do, that it's a vast wilderness and you gotta experience the bad and the good to truly progress.

Whereas I can't see Tsukasa as being anything but being a cooking nerd, and maybe being a pencil pusher but that has more to do with everyone dumping their shit on his lap than his natural aptitude for it.

Shokugeki no Souma is a cooking manga.
>>
>>143796375
Alice loses because while her cooking was better she literally answered to the wrong theme. A bento is lunch in a box, not something hyper-fancy that you serve at a Michelin three-star. It needs to be comfy, not awe-inspiring, hot, not cold, beautiful in simplicity, not complexity. The fact that you had to eat her dish in a specific order fucked with that even more, who the fuck puts instructions on exactly how to eat your lunch in a lunchbox?

It would depend. Souma's is more appetizing in an environment where the benefits of a bento are used. Alice's bento is hard to enjoy if you're in a cramped environment or lack a place where you can lay the box out (again the mist literally doesn't work without the giant silver platter and dome) whereas you can literally eat Souma's bento while working at a typical office cube while doing accounting.

And like the other judges pointed out, Alice's bento is awesome in how it accumulates, but like Erina said before, the higher class cuisine stuff is all about first impact, and doesn't really give much of a shit about repeated eating. It's the same mistake Nikumi made during the don match.

With a bento, you can't expect bento culture to advance much by selling an idea that is not only impractical, but can only be eaten one way if you wanna 'eat it right'.

With Souma, his idea leaves the control to the consumer themselves. It's up to them to find the best combination, if they even can, and that spices it up for people having more repeat eating value since the set up allows you to mix and match.

With Alice's intricate order, it's unlikely that trying to change the order will ever make it taste better, so there's nothing to hold appeal over time.

You are correct in that it's more appetizing if you just sat down at an open table like the judges and ate it for the first time, but that's not a bento, that's a dish.

It's like comparing a fast food burger joint to a 3-star hotel burger that takes 1 hour to make and the match is takeout. Yeah, the 3-star hotel burger is amazing, but it does not serve the needs of what the consumer aka the judges want.

And Souma's bento was by no means that much more inferior to Alice's bento in taste.

There's no guarantee Alice could have made a better appetizing dish than Souma if Souma also just skirted around the theme and went for maximum taste either.

This is a poor point, it doesn't matter if the person can make the bento or not. You can always sell Alice's bentos in stores. The problem is that her bento doesn't even work as a bento, because Alice never thought of a way to encapsulate the nitrogen within the box itself without ruining the taste.

It's literally just a box without a lid, put on top of a platter, and had a dome placed on it after injecting mist.

How, the, fuck, do, you, carry, that, shit?

You can't make excuses like oh she would have the real box in the real thing, because the entire point was to present a bento in it's entirety. You can't just present a 20oz steak and say you'll somehow skewer it on a tooth pick and sell it as a popsicle. The proportions don't even match.
>>
>>143816061
I think an even bigger problem was that her bento isn't actually able to be moved around. It's served as a dish, not as a take it, get on the subway, walk to work, type spreadsheets for two hours then take the elevator and start eating thing that Souma's was. It literally can't be used as a bento, and you're physically unable to make a bento like Alice's because who the fuck has millions of dollars of cooking equipment and knows how to use them in the forty minutes you have before you run off to work?

>You can always sell Alice's bentos in stores
I dunno man
Like, to me a bento is something that reeks of being from home something comfy-like. To use Chinese food as an example, their bentos can include mapo or twice-cooked pork, those are 'homely' dishes, but they won't include something like sour whitefish because that's a gourmet dish.
Either way Souma had a massive advantage right from the start, there's not much more plebian than the bento.

>Like, to me a bento is something that reeks of being from home something comfy-like.

I am not denying that. I am just saying Alice could have still qualified within the boundaries of the theme set by utilizing her technology to sell her dish/bento as a premium product.

It would naturally mean Yukihira's dish having home made value would give him bonus points in comparison, but unlike right now where Alice didn't even fucking make a real bento box capable of dealing with her novelty at least it would be something you could bring to work and act as a bento.

The way she presented her bento was so terrible that it's almost nepotism they didn't fail her on the spot, or rather it was more like a giant oversight by the author because working cooking techniques into a battle manga is probably pretty hard when you get as anal as Shokugeki.

Point is, at least it's a bento if it's capable of being sold in stores. As it was, you couldn't even take it out of a restaurant.

>>143820226
I imagine Rindou is either stronger than Tsukasa and just not interested in cooking or she has a thematic tie-in to Souma.
It's actually pretty stand-out how we know literally nothing of her cooking and she's never demonstrated so much as intent to cook, she literally sat aside to eat eat eat during the festival.
Personally I think she's the type to use her opponent's meal to her advantage, that's why she eats so damn much, to find out what goes well with what after what. It'd fit in nicely with Tsukasa, who seems to like to serve dishes that are self-encompassing, but the idea is that when you can't make full-course meals, the next best thing you can do is use your opponent's dish as your appetizer or your dish as dessert. It'd also be why she can't beat Tsukasa, not because she's necessarily worse at cooking but because Tsukasa's dishes open, fill, and close all by themselves, Rindou has no way of taking advantage of Tsukasa and in fact whatever she makes might even grate against Tsukasa because as far as the judges are concerned, the meal is 'already over'.

>>
>>143821901
>It's actually pretty stand-out how we know literally nothing of her cooking

We know jack shit about some of the other elite 10s as well. Like 3rd seat, 6th seat, uh who else? Do we know 4th seat's? What about 5th seat's? We don't even know Isshiki's specialty.

Don't forget that Rindou could just be another Alice. Erina's dishes were presented before Alice's, but ain't nobody gonna tell you Erina is below Alice.
>>
>>143821918
Yeah but that's why I said 'may as well be', that's how little we know about her. The sum whole of the info we have is that she eats a lot and is #2, nobody has even commented on what she does outside of cooking or was even "w-woah that's her isn't it".

The thing that makes her weird the ones we know nothing about, we barely even see. Rindou is all over the place and all we know is that she's lazy.
>>
>>143822003
Wasn't Isshiki's speciality supposed to be veggies or some shit or was that wild specula from being CROPS SEASON?
>>
>>143822007
We also know that it's her motto that she has to try food for herself to judge, it's a big hint at how she's similar to the Yukihira family. Cause you just know a massive portion of that festival would have made Erina cringe.
>>
>>143822210
Erina was kind of a shit to be honest when it came to food

>>143822089
That's why it depends on when she decides to show her stuff. If she shows it soon and it looks like she might battle someone, chances are she's just 3rd year Alice.

But if she keeps hiding it all the way near the end of graduation, the chances of her usurping Tsukasa rise exponentially.
>>
>>143822280
What if she's the one to finally find a flaw in Tsukasa's cooking and offers to complete his dish for him?
the fangirl inside of me is squealing
>>
>>143822254
That was the point. She had become so jaded from Azami and given how everyone with a bit of talent usually stood out very clearly she ended up like that. Remember people like Souma and Megumi are clear outliers. Most of the faggots in Tootsuki are filthy rich to begin with.
>>
>>143822320
That would be easily possible, given she is the exact opposite of Tsukasa in a regard where Tsukasa is incredibly confident in 'his' cooking whereas so far all we've seen of Rindou is her interest in 'other' people's cooking.

Well so far it was kinda obvious all their chink dishes were pretty generic and safe so to speak. But at the end of the day, Chinese cuisine on average just isn't 3-star material. I mean literally every 3-star restaurant in Chinese history came from HK, a place that until recently with the flood of mainland immigrants, mainly spoke Cantonese.
>>
>>143827088
I dunno man
"Three star material" at the end of the day is honestly something that comes down to taste (and politics). Cantonese is still Chinese, but more importantly imo the idea that a lot of honors get piled onto Hong Kong has more than a little to do with the fact that they were under the British sphere for a long time.
I'm not an expert in gourmet, but it's not like we lack stories of legendary chefs, or lack palace cuisine, or lack home cuisine, or whatever.

You fucking what m8?

Traditionally the "Classic Great Cuisines" as taught by most of the world's top culinary institutes have been: French, Italian, Turkish, and Chinese.

Nips didn't even rank until the last half century
>>
>>143827268
Yes, but if you talk like that then nobody can ever be #1. After all, taste is not only determined by biology, but also by how you are nurtured and growing up.

But does that mean someone who grew up drinking muddy water and thinking it tastes better than clear fresh mountain ice water should have his opinion matter to the rest of the world? Or is it so long as there's 1 billion other people like him who like to drink muddy water over clean water, then it's okay because it's a powerful and commercial influence in the world?

Also, I've been to China/TW/HK/Macau for work and every time I ever got to see a chef cook or meet a chef, I always ask one question since my Chinese friend told me about it, and in the end not one of the chefs ever takes precise measurements using instruments nor feels the need to. They say that if they do it's easy for their sous-chefs to steal their technique, and that how they feel is important.

And then there's the very very familiar Chinese sayings which I'm sure you know about, such as "You get what you pay for" and "Close enough". I like Chinese food, unreasonably so, but I have to recognize these glaring issues that to me, clearly seem to stem from the root of the culture itself.

I mean it's no different than Chinese martial arts. They will argue this and that, but at the end of the day, you won't see a single one dare to step into an MMA ring and prove their supremacy. It's all talk. What about their medicine and how their most famous, what was it called Six something pills? Those literally use mercury and they make more money than some automobile businesses in the states. I'm not talking about low tier shady shit like selling cardboard as mashed up food, I'm talking about successful businesses over 100 years ago.

It was only after the bombs that they were pushed into a corner and forced to get efficient and effective. That's how everything went into a boom ranging from technology to cars to even god damn ramen stands.
>>
>>143826761
What? Central's idea -- we should teach people to follow recipes -- is the norm across most of the world, across most forms of teaching and most subjects. People are more taught how to do things than how to independently derive their own way of doing things.
>>
>>143827681
Traditionally, yes. Unfortunately you also have to consider marketability and safety. China's food, water, and air being literal poison in the present day sort of dampens one's enthusiasm to try their cuisine. You know it's standard practice for athletic teams to bring their own water when they're visiting China? You can't even trust the tap water in five star hotels.

>>
>>143827716
>Yes, but if you talk like that then nobody can ever be #1.
I mean, that's what I think, cooking isn't a precise art. At the end of the day, it's literally taste in the original sense of the word.

>What about their medicine and how their most famous, what was it called Six something pills?
That's not normal Chinese medicine, that's basically occult shit. Normal Chinese medicine that you can buy these days is pretty rigid, they're powdered herbs, and the centerpiece of Chinese medicine is more like a lifestyle guide, what to eat with what, what things you need to eat less of when you're tired, whatever. Western medicine is supreme in curing things, Eastern is better imo to actually prevent getting sick in the first place, since Eastern medicine is actually 90% not even the medicine.

>you get what you pay for / close enough
The first one isn't a saying in China unless you're translating it weird, the second one is used for low-tier shit. I told you, I'm not an expert on gourmet, but it sounds to me like you're attacking the chefs more than the food itself. That's not really the problem here though, I'm not saying we have restaurants that deserve the three-star stuff because at the end of the day I don't actually know what makes three star, but I do know that the actual dishes themselves don't lose out in refinement or detail to, say, gourmet French or Italian dishes, and SnS, since they use god-tier fantasy chefs to do the cooking, wouldn't have the issue of the chefs 'feeling' their way through.

>Chinese martial arts
If you're talking about Wushu, that's because wushu isn't a martial art. It's a sport that's meant to look nice. Actual martial arts like Bagua or Baji do have practitioners, and people get hurt or die practicing it, and the MMA stuff I've watched often incorporates some of the techniques.
Speaking of MMA why don't more people die during those matches?
>>
>>143827803
>Nips were poor as fuck and before then had no real way to make progress
Am I being rused? They caught up to the West's industrial and technological capabilities in a decade or so, albeit with the disenfranchising of the common man. Sure, they hit a wall with lack of resources, but that's why they invaded continental Asia.

If they hadn't gotten too greedy and stayed out of WWII, they could have done fairly well for themselves. Though you can argue that America would have eventually declared war on them anyway.
>>
>>143827999
Their food and air aren't that bad, Beijing gets like one smogday a week now. It's bad during the winter sometimes but during the other three seasons we're okay. Food, well, don't buy off fucking street stalls.

>Nips were poor as fuck

Nip's technology was Western-tier or better by World War I and they didn't fall behind during WWII (besides tanks).

>full of themselves
Every country in the world is full of themselves when they're in the top bracket of nations worldwide and even some that aren't get full of themselves. Japan had every right to be proud of themselves.
>>
>>143827999
To be fair "Great World Cuisines" in the context I was talking about have less to do with food actually made in that country and more snobbish Frogs in the late 19th early 20th century decided "Only restaurants that serve food from these culinary traditions deserve any recognition"

The average bento isn't a gourmet dish obviously. There are really expensive ensembles put together artistically but you can't really call those bento anymore. You now realize that Shokugeki no Soma is about turning the ordinary/familiar into something extraordinary.

My guess is when Japan's business interests exploded in the 70s and 80s leading to Western businessmen trying to wine and dine potential business partners at Japanese restaurants. Leading to those Japanese restaurants developing a clientele that was mostly upper-middle or upper class and thus become big deals in the culinary world

That and Japanese restaurants IN Japan started getting Michelin Stars like fucking candy, leading to pissed off French and American chefs claiming it was only happening so that Michelin could sell more tires in Japan

The problem is that Central teaches that but doesn't teach the students how to do that. It's like a math teacher telling kids that 2 plus 2 equals 4 without going into any of the details on why that's the answer and how to get to that answer. As we see in this chapter Central is literally teaching in copy paste terms and when the kids hit a block they're fucked and that makes for not only garbage cooks but a crappy rep for churning out crap. Tootsuki would be finished if this were the way they taught people from then on. The only reason it's gotten this big is because the author can say that Rindow and the others caused because if the truly talented cooks can't reverse this issue or survive it they aren't worthy of the old Tootsuki anyway.

That's perfectly fine though? There's no way to learn that tier of basic shit without rote memorization, you can't derive the product of seven and five no matter what you do.
>>
>>143829515
>It's like a math teacher telling kids that 2 plus 2 equals 4 without going into any of the details on why that's the answer and how to get to that answer.
Which is standard, especially with maths. Are children taught addition as a binary operation upon elements of a set or are they taught that 2+2=4? How many engineers can do calculus without knowing the fine details of what the hell they're doing?

I'm not arguing that it's correct, but the notion that Central is somehow "a wacky, out there concept" is inane when its philosophy is fairly standard in education. Creativity isn't how most people are taught; we just sort of hope that happens somewhere along the way.

Central must be shown to be wrong -- and I'd agree that we're already seeing the signs of how that's going to be cropping up this chapter.
>>
>>143830009
The problem with Central as I see it is that they're not teaching basic calculus to engineers without telling them what the fuck is going on, they're teaching actual mathematics majors calculus without telling them what's going on behind the scenes, which is deadly because math majors don't do calculations or anything of the sort, they do proofs and full derivations for which you need to know the shit you're doing.
People aiming to be chef among chefs can't just know WHAT they're supposed to be doing, but why they're supposed to do that and how that works.

Actually started cooking as a result of watching SnS. Some of the recipes are too crazy to approach, but some are actually awesome dishes to make.

The rice with aspic thingy from Ep 02 was extremely tasty. Even more so, the stock you make for aspic is actually the tastiest stock I've ever tried, full of intense taste.

Chaliapin Don from Meat-chan shokugeki is tasty as fuck. Didn't really notice meat becoming more tender as a result of putting a heap of onions on it, but the sauce you get is just out of this world. I mostly use it as a meat recipe, as it's very hard to find ume for rice.

Picrelated is my take on Apple Risotto I made for my guests, but it lost its unique texture already. There was no proper recipe for it, so I used some points from Jamie Oliver recipe and added what was talked about in the SnS. This is my favorite thing to cook - it's fun and tasty as hell.

>>

>>
>>143831469
Restaurants have custom dishes everywhere. A place I served. "Georgia Apple Pie" had peaches instead of apples and they were popular for it.

Customers are not retarded. They know if a chef has a special way of presenting something. I mean, this asshole put candy in his.

So it's not a damn apple pie, they just call it one. If a cooking contest asked for an apple pie and you presented a peach pie, you lose.

then go reread the chapter you speedreading fuck. Alice managed to utterly miss the theme of their dish in the exact same way you are.

one of the reasons the judges rated Souma's dish so highly was because of the extremely clever ways it did things like retain heat, and remain at ideal temperatures because of its design. A lunchbox is much, much more than "just a box with food in it." It has functions.

so in the manga they just explained a case where the cheap, everyday ingredient is actually BETTER than the haute stuff due to actual reasons. I can't remember that happening before in the series, which is a shame since that's what the entire manga should be about. all we've seen so far is that souma has been able to keep up because of souma's ingenuity, or because he's able to make cheap stuff somehow "work" rather than "being inherently better", or if something is better it's because souma made it better or the reasoning is something far less explicit. the recent case with the egg is the only time to my recollection we've gotten a dish that is always going to be better with pleb stuff in it rather than with high class stuff.
>>
>>143832246
That's because you're thinking of high class the wrong way.
It's not that it's better because it's high class, but that because it's considered high class because it is almost always better.
It's not that three stars magically makes a chef better, but that a chef has to be incredible to get the third star. It's not that because I slap a 20000 yen price tag on something it becomes tastier, but because chefs generally agree it's more useful that it gains the 20000 yen price tag. If the exhausting prep work of kobe beef didn't produce results, nobody would do it because no chef would buy it and they'd not make a profit/

>>
>>143832530
this post looks to me like you're replying to something completely different. obviously souma's skills play a large factor in his success, since that's the whole driving point of the plot. the conflict has always been from the beginning though that people have been rejecting him because he comes from (and practices) a food culture that is seen as inferior to the haute stuff. so it's not really that they're rejecting souma's skills themselves, they just heavily doubt he has any if he grew up in that environment. what they are rejecting is the kind of food he makes, that has been clearly evident every time since day 1. to that point, this manga has always been "class warfare: food edition" and the plucky plebeian stuck in a world of elites is touted as the hero for the reader. however, actual cooking is supposed to have a wide field of many unique things and situations, yet usually whenever souma wins it's only because he gets by on his skills, or because he shows that plebe food can be made to be just as good. we hardly ever see it shown that the plebe food is actually better to start with, which is doing a disservice.
>>
>>143832801
I was responding specifically to the ingredients. The whole reason why some ingredients are high class is because they are, for almost all intents, actually better.
Pleb food is something else entirely - you could argue that the only difference between pleb food and (high tier) haute food is that pleb food can actually be made by plebs whereas high-tier haute food is almost impossible to actually make unless you actually practice and study how to make it, and this has no bearing on what the pinnacle of each is
Either way, my other post was on why ingredients are high or low class, did I answer the wrong post or do you disagree? Legit asking.
>>
>>143832731

>>
>>143832909

>Japan is fucktiny in area
>still has twice as many people as France
What the fuck is wrong with Europe?
>>
>>143832731
True, but any country getting past France in the first place was a pretty big shock.

For example, the UK (a country with a population highly comparable to that of France) only has four three star restaurants. Two of them are owned by Frenchmen, and one of them by Gordon Ramsay... who studied under Michel Roux (who actually owns one of the other 3 star restaurants in London) and studied in Paris.

Per capita its unimpressive, but as a whole France has been dethroned a the culinary champion. That's a big deal. Needless to say the French were buttflustered.
>>
>>143833038
I wasn't addressing the skill of chefs at all.
I'm saying that a high class ingredient is considered high class because it's good.
More directly, the reason why plebian ingredients are presented as inferior to high class ingredients is because they basically are by definition, if they were better then they'd be elevated to being high class themselves.

>>143833074
I'm not even French and I'm buttflustered. Is it really not just a matter of Japanese cuisine fitting the judges' tongues or something?

>>143833240
But that's not what Souma's cooking is. Souma doesn't truly have a specialty yet besides being the random masher who throws in shit you didn't even think of to make the dish better.
Jouichirou fused national specialties and techniques to create truly unique dishes, Nikumi fixates on how to fully draw out the flavor of meat and is a specialist in heating, etc.
Souma's specialty isn't in using low-class ingredients so much as obtaining synergy from those ingredients.
Also you have to realize that the recipes are still thought up by a chef, so she has to be able to imagine his recipes in her head.
Wilted cabbage is pretty inferior to fresh cabbage and I don't know if she can think of a way to turn that around.
Low class eggs are sort of an exception because of all the shit you can do with eggs, just look at that chink dish where you bury it in lime or something.

I liked Erina getting upset by this. Even when she's "Azami's Erina" she'd get msd at people who don't understand the foundations and history of dishes. Ignorance always set her off.

Now thst she's breaking free of her dad, watching him turn out cooks like this must be even more infuriating.

Why would you yell at children that still have to learn.

He yells to the people who are supposed to know their shit but turn out to be shit at the job.

>Is Gordon Ramsey even that good of a chef?
He has a total of 9 Michelin stars spread across the USA, UK, Japan and even France. And it's hard as fuck to get a restaurant in Paris considering the competition is fierce as fuck.

He's not the best of the world, but he's up there.

Those stars he lost were in LA by the way, probably because it lacked his own supervision. I think he earned back one of those two stars though.
>>
>>143839288
How many of those restaurants he owns were from ones he sent HK winners to go run? What even happened to all of those guys anyways?
>>
>>143839454
>HK winners
Some of them don't even get the position they're promised and act as sous chef or second fiddle in the restaurant. Some have trouble being professional because of drugs and fuck up their career. Some fulfill their responsibilities but don't really go anywhere.
>>
>>143839557
So none of them are the ones running any michelin star restaurants, got it. About what I expected.

The main issue is actually that Michelin stars were not accepted in Japan as a means of judging restaurants.

Many suspect that Japan's restaurants were given Michelin stars not due to quality or even judge preference. Most believe that a large number of stars was awarded to Japanese restaurants to encourage them to see it as a standard, adopt the star system, and ultimately, profit Michelin through enlarging their market and establishing a stronger presence in Asia.

I think about 2/3rds to half actually deserve the stars.

Did it work?
>>
>>143840352
Not him but I don't think so, I have a few friends from Japan and they think Michelin stars mean that the restaurant is probably 'good', but isn't the 'holy fucking shit' that we see them as.
The fact that it feels like every other high-class restaurant in Tokyo (according to them) has one or more makes them feel like it means shit.

I remember reading something about how they were awarding michelin stars to places that really didn't earn them and the extra reputation would put so much increased business on them that they turned the award down so that they could still operate on the same level. that seems to directly contradict the idea that michelin stars don't have much impact there.
