I've been wondering this
I know Japan only had to have basic tanks to fight the Chinese and later on developed the Type 3 to fight the Americans when they invaded which for obvious reasons was never used but what about when the were fighting the Soviets, surely the Russians were using IS's, what did the Japanese do about them?
>>
>>143797874

Well, the real Nip Army ran away as fast as they could, leaving the Korean Conscripts to either fight or surrender, that's one. The unfortunate most likely fought with the lunge mines but against T-34s, IS-2s, even the fucking T-26s, AND hordes of Veteran Russians, nah, no chance.

That was the Kwantung army, which had more or less the older tanks, since the best ones were transfered to the home islands to face the expected american landing.
So the russians faced essentially a mixture of Ha-Go's, Chi-Ha's and various tankettes, plus some Ke-Nu's and armored cars like the Sumida Type 93. Nothing remotely on par with a T-34, let alone an ISII.

>surely the Russians were using IS's, what did the Japanese do about them?

not a hell of a lot

The Kwantung Army was the largest IJA force and the bulk of Japanese forces on the Asian mainland. It exercised significant political influence (its commanders had basically been responsible for starting the war with China on their own initiative) and held great prestige. The Japanese were fairly confident that they could resist a Soviet attack on Manchuria, in part due to the low infrastructure of the Manchurian frontier.

In the event, the Red Army rolled over all 700,000 of the Kwantung Army and reached Korea in less than two weeks. Their advance only stopped on the Yalu River at all because they had wait for their overland supply lines to catch up.

Even if the Japanese had sent their Chi-nus to fight in Manchuria, they'd almost certainly have made no real difference, mostly because by 1945 the Soviets had become pretty good at Deep Battle while the IJA's main warfighting experience was semi-counterinsurgency semi-trench warfare operations against unmotorized infantry.
>>
>>143798451

the Matilda is actually pretty good in War Thunder, I like it a lot. It gets penned hard by Marders but it still win if you manage to shoot them first.
>>
>>143798451

The normal Matilda is pretty good. Good armor, lots of hp and very high penetration on its gun. Sure each shot does piddly for damage but it has a fantastic reload speed.

The only real con is the fact its slow.

the roadwheels were split into pairs, like the VVSS/HVSS bogies on the sherman, except that instead of a pair of volute springs, the roadwheels were connected via a toggle/crank mechanism to a short, longitudinal(front-to-back) mounted torsion bar in the bogey, which acted as the spring. You had 3 bogeys per side, for a total of 6 roadwheels and 3 torsion bars on each side.

unfortunately, these vehicles didn't get their own gearboxes and either used the gearboxes from the tank chassis they were derived from. These tanks weren't expected to need to reverse terribly quickly in many cases by their makers, so they decided turning around would be sufficient. On top of this, germany and czechoslovakia could not into torque converters, so that gear had to be rather short anyways, and adding more gears would just make the transmissions big and heavy

Two 10-cylinder gasoline engines powered two generators, which were then connected to two electric motors, one for each track.
This was supposed to allow for the use of an electric transmission, making driving easier, but it didn't really work out in practice. All the wiring was done with shit-quality copper because of wartime shortages, and the gasoline engines were prone to bursting into flames.

The Oarai tiger, however, is slightly less shit, thanks to a hilarious loophole in the Senshado regulations that permits modernization of a tank's electrical system. This let the Leopon team replace the original electric motors and wiring with more powerful and reliable alternatives. (i.e. Tesla) They still have to rely on the crappy gasoline engines, though, making this a slight advantage at best.

for even more hilarious suspension weirdness, we need look no further than Kuromorimine's star, the Maus! Its great bulk is supported by a vertical volute spring suspension. But this isn't the simple, rugged system of the sherman! Oh no, each bogie supported four roadwheels in a pair of articulated arms, on top of this, the drivetrain was also a delightful clusterfuck. Essentially an even bigger version of the Tiger(P)'s system, except that instead of 2 engines, it was equipped with a single massive diesel developed by Daimler Benz which then drove the generator. In fact, the maus was designed to cross rivers in pairs, with one tank providing electrical power to the submerged one, which would then do the same to the tank following it as that one crossed!

it's easier to get consistent hardness, tensile strength, etc with rolled, welded plates. But on the other hand, you can make some absolutely fantastic ballistic shapes with casting. Thanks to their excellent industrial capacities, the US and USSR could afford the necessary quality control to make large scale castings a feasible choice during the war. The rounded profile of the M4 and T-34/85's turrets meant that their armor could punch well above its weight. However, with the advent of high quality arc welding and the need for large quantities of tanks to the front, casting was reserved for turrets and other such components many times. The ultimate cast tank would have to be the M48 Patton of the 1950s, its elliptical shape could only be feasibly achieved through casting, and this profile meant that its armor provided excellent protection

two things happened, one: the politicians got involved, and even though in many cases the army's supply, ordnance and combat commands said that they were quite satisfied with the equipment they had, including the Tiger I, politicians and brass insisted on pushing bigger and bigger machines onto them.

However, following about 1943, this problem would be exacerbated by a group of industry leaders known as the "Panzer Commission" Included among them was our good friend Herr Doktor Ferdinand Porsche. Concerned primarily with trying to land fat contracts based on the leadership's egos. This is what led to such insane projects as the Maus even!

Nah, Waffle only had AMC35's, Vickers T-15's, and M4 (105)'s. They lost to Yogurt.

From a previous thread:

>For years, Yoghurt Academy had been fielding tanks and tankettes of the likes of CV33 and 38(t) in the national tournamet. Their strategy had always been defensive in nature, together with a well timed mobile counter-attack."

>However, THIS year, Yoghurt upgraded their lineup. Panther IV G and Jagdpanzer IV appeared and no one know how they managed to procure them. The other schools were surprised, but even the journalists were caught unawares.

>On the other side, Waffle had previously abandoned senshado due to a lack of students. But after a massive influx of new applicants do to the massively popular new culinary elective being added, the school was able to add departments involving Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries. This lead to the restoration of Senshado as a club.

>However, tank wise they only have Renault AMC35s, Shermans with retrofitted 105 mm howitzer turrets, and a few Vickers T-15s.

>Thus Yoghurt, with massively improved firepower and armour compared to its own past, attempt to defeat Waffle through a frontal assault. They put their heaviest armour on the front and advanced.

>Waffle on their end, formed a defensive formation using as much height advantage as they could with available terrain, and engaged their enemies as they came into range.
The Renault AMC35s and Shermans fought bravely, with the Vickers T15s trying to disrupt the enemy. However the tech disadvantage is just too great, with the more powerful vehicles of Yoghurt appearing decisive.

More later.

>However, Yoghurt was not familiar with the workings of their own new vehicles. This meant their accuracy was atrocious and struggle to hit anything.

>None the less, because both sides have stopped moving and resorted to shelling one another while stationary, Waffle tanks slowly got wiped out.

>Later analysis showed that the Shermans with the modified Howzers were both inadequate in firepower and firing rate, and that lead to them failing to disable any of the Panther IVs or Jagdpanzers.

>At the end of the fierce artillery duel, Waffle vehicles were destroyed one after another, and it was Yoghurt's victory in the first round. However, Yoghurt's 2nd round opponent is Black Forest. If they were to have a chance defeating the former champions, they need to massively improve the accuracy of their guns between now and the next match.

Yoghurt will later get their shit punched in by Glorianna.

tl;dr

Casting allows for very odd shapes to be manufactured much faster than welding or other fabrication methods.

That being said, casting failures waste much more time. With casting, you don't know if the product will pass QC until it's cooled completely, and with large objects such as tank hulls it may take days. With welding, the major metalworking has already been done at another factory that does nothing but create armor plate. If there's a defect it's probably not going to end up on the main assembly line anyways, and if there's a weak weld it can be found within minutes of it being done.

Welding allows for much faster assembly of prefabricated armor plates.

Casting is usually meant for smaller, more oddly-shaped objects such as mantlets, drive sprockets, muzzle brakes, and so on.

The problem with cast armor is that you need to send the whole tank back to the factory for repairs.
When a plate on a welded or riveted tank gets worn out, you can just change the plate in the field.
An A3 Sherman is much cheaper to repair than an A1 for example.

The Stridsvagn M/42 is a fun one. Especially considering that in the form of the Stridsvagn 74, it would continue to serve all the way into the 1980s. The Swedish designation system for tanks is an interesting one: the first 1 or 2 digits denote the caliber of the gun in cm, while the last one denotes how many tanks with guns of that caliber have been accepted. Hence, Strv. 74, the 4th tank design in swedish service armed with a 7cm gun (technically 7.5cm but whatever)

Originally equipped with a 75mm gun developed by bofors, it was roughly similar in firepower to the panzer iv with the L/24 cannon. Its torsion bar suspension was a very forward thinking idea, which allowed the tank to continue on for so long. The drivetrain is an interesting thing too. The first models were equipped with what was called an electromagnetic gearbox. Unfortunately I have no goddamn idea what an electromagnetic gearbox is, aside from it was apparently used on buses and rail trams. However, this was apparently abandoned for a more conventional, hydraulically operated automatic gearbox later on, which suggests it had serious issues.

oh, learn something new every day. And i have no idea, it's not a bad system, but it has a bit more potential for confusion, since stridsvagn literally just means "fighting vehicle" and the m/40 just means "model of 1940", this doesn't say if it's a light tank, medium tank, etc. On the other hand, Medium Tank M4A3E6 tells you that it is the 4th medium tank design for the army, (might only be the 2nd or 3rd accepted and it goes batshit later on, but whatever), 3rd major variation (GAA engine), and the 6th minor variation (76mm gun in T23 turret)

And as I said, they will never be relevant.

See what they did to Yogurt just now, giving them latest German equipment, while Gregor is stuck with pre-war Vz.35s, and I doubt that we will see them fielding advanced prototypes like T-15, T-21, the horror that was the S-3, or even the Vz.39, that already got the army designation, and was to be ordered in large numbers, but in the end never got past the stage of initial prototypes.

Name + number is the best. The main failing of the American system was that they didn't differentiate between an M3 Light and an M3 Medium, leading to some confusion.

So I went on a little hunt, and I believe "Electromagnetic Gearbox" is another term for a Preselector Gearbox.

First off, http://www.ointres.se/strv_m_41.htm (In Swedish) lists the M/41 (Licensed-built 38t) as having a Preselector Gearbox. The Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preselector_gearbox for Preselector Gearbox (Yeah, great source.) also mentioned that Preselector Gearboxes wasn't uncommon on many vehicles from cars, buses, armored vehicles, motorcycles, and railcars during the 1930s.

It doesn't seem that impossible that during the development of the M/42 they took some notes from a tank they already had.
>>
>>143806728

You don't truly believe adding a trailer of fuel behind a recovery tank is a good idea, right?

>In the early 70s, Brazil was still using it's Stuarts light tanks. Altough the vehicles were way better than modern MBT for the use in the "special" terrain of the jungle, and could still be usefull for security use, they were definitly outclassed by modern light tanks or even armored cars, and altough Brazil also owned M41 Walker Bulldog since 1960, sending all the Stuarts (Brazil had owned 350 M3A3 and M3A5 light tanks) to scrap would tragically decrease the number of tanks in service in Brazil.

>A solution to this problem was to make a major improvement on the Stuarts light tank, and that's what the Bernardini firm did with the X1A. This improvement was one of the most radical ever made: The turret was replaced by a totally new one, housing a french DEFA CN90F1 90mm gun, firing HEAT, HESH and APFSDS shells. This weapon, wich was also used in the excellent french AML-90 armored car, could penetrate 320mm at 0°, with anti-tank ammunitions. As the AML-90 gained the nickname of "T-55 killer" during it's use in Africa, the anti-tank quality of this gun is proved.

>However, the improvements did not stop there. The original Continental engine was replaced by a Swedish Saab-Scabia ICSD diesel six-cylinders, with an horsepower of 260hp. The slope of the frontal armor was also improved. Of course, this could not stop any shot of a Main Battle Tank, or even of a autocannon of 40 or 30mm, but was still an improvement against armor-piercing 7.62 or 12.7mm bullets. Communications systems were also bring to an modern standard. The weight was raised to 15 tons.

>This improvement, revealed in 1973, was one of(if not the)the most radical improvement ever made on a tank, bringing a WW2 light tank to a vehicle that could almost compete with modern armored cars. 80 Stuarts were upgraded to this standard.

>As it's modernization met success, Bernardini continued to work on it's X1A. This lead to the X1A1 prototype. The main improvement was the addition of a third boggie to the suspensions. However, to add this new boggie, it was needed to raise the lenght of 1.50 meters. None others major improvements were made on this prototype, and it was not accepted for production.

>However, the X1A1 prototype did not go to waste. It's chassis was used to mount the Avibras X-40 rocket launcher system. In this configuration, the X1A1 was armed with three 300mm rockets, each one weighting 645kg. As for the original version, the X-40 wasn't purchased by the brazilian army.

>The last variant of the X1A came in the late 70s, with the X1A2. This variant kept the suspensions of the X1A1 type, but received a new gun: A belgian Cockerill 90mm, apparently a Mark III. Penetration was over 300mm. The hull of the X1A2 was totally reworked, being now totally sloped. The engine was also replaced, now being a Saab-Scania diesel of 300hp, wich balanced the weight (Wich now raised 18 tons empty). Those vehicles had, now, almost nothing common with the original Stuart light tank.

>30 X1A2 were made. Unlike the X1A, those were totally new vehicles, not converted M3 Stuarts. All X1A tanks would finally be phased out during the 90s. They can most likely claim the title of most radically upgraded World War Two tanks.

They started making m/42s with two engines and a preselected gearbox.
It didn't work very well so they made the others with hydraulic gearboxes. Some of these had one engine instead of two.
They later took the tanks with preselector gearboxes and gave them mechanical manual gearboxes instead.
I believe the strv 74 and ikv 37 were based on these twin engine manual tanks.
>>
>>143791289
Because it was a useless novelty tank with an overcompensatory gimmick gun with a jerry-rigged balancing system situated ON TOP OF THE TANK where it could be easily shot and thereby leave the gun unable to elevate and a pathetic engine that's reduced to practically useless by having a bunch of half-assed applique armor taken from a Panther hull slapped on.

well he's haflway right, Super Pershing number 1 did have an external equilibrator and single piece ammunition. But on the other hand, Spershings 2-25 switched over to the T15E2 cannon with two piece shells and an internal equilibrator mechanism. however the engine of the pershing was always trouble, the GAF was made for the earlier models of the T20 series, which were some 10 tonnes lighter so the pershing only went about 10 km/h off-road

Two Pershings were fitted with the T54 90mm gun. The shells were single piece, the casings were shorter and fatter than the ones for the T15E1 and the muzzle break had a baffle cut off.
The Pershings were supposed to use the 700hp Continental AV because they knew that the 500hp V8 Ford wasn't enough but McNair didn't want to strain logistics and the Ford was already in use by the A3 Sherman.

The USA was like, WHOA, USSR, Katyusha, rockets on a truck! Cool! Then they said that the amount of rockets on there was too little. 60 tubes sounded fine, all they needed now was a platform. Oh lookie, is Sherman Medium, why the hell not? And so the Calliope was born. Only used in limited numbers during the end years of the war. Then America was like, we need better rockets and platform. So they eventually ditched it.

That is not true at all. The tankers, not the brass, said "nah we don't need it. The 75 is fine. Let's not waste time converting all Shermans to the 76mm" Cause at that point of the war, they were fighting mostly infantry and doing infantry support. Some got converted, yes. But if you're mostly using HE, why use the shittier ammo when you barely use AP. And, there were Hellcats, the M10, the British 17 pounders, the M36 90mm. Most importantly, you had infantry and air superiority
