I guess it's a valid point if you never read the manga or expected that the earlier chapters delved too much into the reasons of Guts. The Golden age happens a bit later and really, really Guts it's as edgy as it seems in the black swordman arc, he literally doesn't wanna live anymore, but he's the strugler and the opposite of Grifith.
