Subaru's actions were strange in the begining, like he yearns for others in obsessive ways, which puts into question who he was before the isekai thing.

I agree that subaru is a 'well' written character to an extent, the whole death loop thing is fucking him up mentally, even going as far as thinking he deserves anything for his sacrifice.

And after insulting the customs of another world he got saved by a guy, albeit in a shameful way, but preventing his death or further imprisonment. Then he proceeded to burn every bridge that he could, and acted like a spoiled shit.
Now, we will get even more suffering, where this guy has to actually understand, that time travelers can never be heroes and will never deserve to be called as such.

I can rationally accept the way he's behaving right now: if you analyze things, he always had the signs of being an asshole.
However, I think they made the transition too sudden and too jarring. He follows the "nice guy" trope for the entire show, which can be creepy, but most people attribute as harmless. Then suddenly his outward character changes completely. I think that, if the writers had made this change more gradual and more foreshadowed, this wouldn't feel as wrong as it did. He started the series as a genre-savvy character, but now shows himself to be completely unaware of his own character.

(All that said, I was literally screaming "NO!" "I CAN'T EVEN" "THIS GUY", during the last ep. I managed to survive through it, but the end gave me no reaction, I was just impatiently waiting for him to get fucked already.)

This whole time Suffaru has done nothing but work himself to the bone, and literally die to save the lives of the ones he cares about, trying endlessly to get things right and for what payoff? From everyone else's perspective it's pitiful and sad because they think that he literally does nothing except get in the way sometimes, they don't understand what he does for them, they don't know what he's going through and it's killing him on the inside worse than any death on the outside.

Why do you dumb redditors don't understand that the fact that he's crazy and broken is not the problem. The problem is the shape his crazyness takes. His obsession with Emilia, his anger at the fact that Emilia, Rem and other characters have agency and won't follow his stupid ideas, and tell him that he can't do shit (which is true), his anger at the fact that their world doesn't revolve around him.

His dying over and over and suffering would explain him being sad, doing dumb things, being scared, withdrawn and a lot of various stuff but his narcissism and obsessions are not part of this.

The way he becomes crazy shows that Subaru, deep down, isn't a good person. That's all. Even Emilia called him selfish.

The reason people unironically compare Kasuma and Subaru is because they are unaware they're part of the same group that re:zero is trying to condemn. They praise Kasumas logic and reasoning while condemning Subarus weakness and social ineptness. The reason why this is funny to me is because Kasuma is, in fact, a self insert. Granted, not in the sense of him being OP, he is just flawless when it comes to interacting with other characters. He is always the voice of reason and always the one to solve problems, even though his solutions isn't all that clever(happens way more in the LN). Despite him being sort of a dick, he has a harem of cute girls that fawn over him, not to mention that all other characters are sort of dumb to make Kasuma look smarter. Of course, Konosuba is a comedy and it makes fun of these tropes, however that doesn't make Kasuma less of a self insert.

Which is why these people can't stand Subaru, which is flawed to the point that they can't self-insert onto him. These people are usually the ones that dislike the show mearly for having a "unlikable MC". Subaru is realistic, and that doesn't automatically equate to being likable. These last episodes are a good example, instead of realizing his faults, he doubles down on his delousions after Rem reassures him, making him more obssesed with Emilia. Which is what most of us probably would do in that situation.

Judging by his remarks, Subaru has serious issues with being perceived as worthless.

This is probably related to some kind of persecution complex that shut-in otaku tend to have and how they are generally perceived by society.

So he's struggling to find his place in this new world, but he hasn’t moved past his preconceived knowledge of shitty isekai light novels enough to realize that the fate of the world does not rest on his shoulders.

The reason Subaru is well written is because people can understand his motivations and emotions. I can see why he does what he does even while I don't agree with his actions because his character is incredibly flawed. His character is realistic because even though at first glance he seems too optimistic (understandable since he's in a new world and he's self aware enough to see it as a new beginning), his reactions to events are very human. One example being his reaction to the village slaughter. This makes people empathize with him and makes him realistic. Subaru is intriguing by the way of walter white but with more suffering.
