All that's missing was a bit with Skull Knight and some Bakiraka, but the anime did a fine enough job in covering the Golden Arc, and at least getting you excited to read the manga. I think Berserk never had a chance again after 1997, because there wasn't enough manga left to adapt once they got to Eclipse, and digipaint was literally already being used for some shows at the time. If another Berserk were to be made, around now would have been the time, but not like what we've gotten.

Can't be overstated enough, but half of why Berserk worked so well was Susumu's masterpiece mood setting. Music, watercolor perfection, and the virtue of being Berserk saved a really low budget project that could have been as reviled as Lodoss TV.

Best part about the 1997 anime is that it ends where it does. If you finish it before starting the manga you're left in shock and absolutely desperate to keep on with the story.

They clearly never meant to continue the 97 anime, so it works very well on it's own. And if you want to get to know the series, you have to read it from the beggining anyway, so it was perfect for introducing people to the series.

The '97 anime and the 3rd Golden Age movie are the only half-decent adaptations, but if you want to experience the very best Berserk has to offer, you have to read the manga.

Just read the manga. That is the only truly good material for Berserk.

The 97 anime butchers it quite a bit, though overall it's still tolerable, so you can watch it after you've read the manga. The soundtrack is also amazing because Hirasawa is a genius, so if you don't watch it you can at least listen to and enjoy that.

Movies are shit. Some scenes are animated / done well, and they don't butcher it quite as much like the 97 anime, but the CGI is terrible, the tone is off, characters look like shit, and they still leave a lot of details out. The music is good but not Hirasawa. So they're worse than the 97 anime.

The new anime is just one episode so far but so far it's irredeemable toxic waste. Don't go within proximity of that radiation zone, my friend. Also, it picks up where the third movie left off, so it is technically a continuation of the movies, not the 97 anime.
