This is the Black Swordsman. This is the image that's supposed to get fans excited for an anime adaptation of a character arc we have yet to see properly animated.

Well, nope, turns out that's being skipped. We'll instead get to see Guts in his redemption arc instead, with only a single Black Swordsman episode, which was a horrendously paced mishmash of random scraps of Black Swordsman and Lost Children going straight into the beginning of Chains of Conviction.

Not even to mention the usual bullshit of promotional image vs. final product that is the animation and design and sound effects and fucking absolutely everything.

I waited to watch this with friends today. Berserk has been my favorite series in all genres for almost 20 years. 20 fucking years hanging onto every image and word from miura.

When I heard they were taking the first steps to animate past golden arc, my hype train was full speed.

THEN I SEE THE FUCKING ANIMATION. THE FUCKING NEW AGE EDGY ANIMU SUPER POWER STYLE SHIT. THE INTERNAL MONOLOGS.

Whay couldnt they just animate it? THIS is how I'm supposed to introduce new people to the fucking best manga ever created? They are seriously fucking the lore up this much? Did Miuras agent just say "get your fat tits off of idol master or I'm selling animation rights to the lowest bidder!". The movies were acceptable, this was sub par.

Animation needs work, in particular with mouth and standard walking animations.
Music seems fitting, it's no Hirasawa but it has it's moments.
First episode feels rushed with them introducing Ishidoro, Shrieke, and the Holy Iron Chain Knights in the span of about a minute.
The animation for the action scenes looks good if the clangs are off putting.
All in all it is a very rough start and unless they pull some sort of miracle out of their ass it is completely reasonable to drop it, even if you're a fan.
Side note, making Hirasawa's track a next episode preview seems like a slap in the face of fans of any adaptation of Berserk, be it game or anime.

Guts was super edgy during the Black Swordsman arc. Almost uncharacteristically so. Lost Children Guts is probably how Miura wishes Black Swordsman Guts was.

It was a part of his character development. Guts tried his hardest to pretend that he doesn't give a shit about anything but murderizing the apostles, but Godo gave him a good speech about "Anger being a place where those who can't stand sadness go". That and him realizing that Caska almost being burned at the stake was his fault because he left her behind and went on ahead to wage a war of his own. I think it only makes his character better as you can see him evolve and change over time.

Oh don't get me wrong, I totally agree that's it's an integral part of Guts's character development. I also think that BS Guts was written way before Miura knew what he wanted to do with Guts and the series. That's why I believe that LC Guts is more or less how Miura would write Guts if he could redo the BS arc. Even though Lost Children is part of the Conviction arc, it really is more of a continuation of the Black Swordsman arc with Guts mindlessly hunting Apostles and giving into his inner beast.

All that aside, I'm glad that Guts is in a new stage of his life. It feels like everyone wants Black Swordsman Guts to come back, but I'm happy to see him move forward and progress into a different and more positive person. I like seeing him with a new crew, and I like seeing him fight to protect others instead of just giving in to the beast and going solo.

This show seems to be a combination of lack of budget and awful directing. The shit tier CG displays their shit tier budget, and the awful directing is pretty clear in situations such as three spooky skellingtons standing entirely still for 10 seconds as Colette approaches Guts. I know it's a common refrain with Berserk fans, but god does this series deserve a better adaption. Hell, I would've donated to a fucking kickstarter for this, of only for a chance at a series that wasn't an utter trainwreck. Technically it's possible for the series to improve, but unless the following episodes are vastly different from the first it's not happening. I swear, 70+% of the scenes are shitty cg, and every once in a while they let you glance at some okay looking drawings. Did we see a non cg puck before the end of the episode? He looked totally different.

Absolute disaster of a first episode. Only way the series turns out alright is if they spent all their budget on later episodes (plenty of non cg eclipse scenes in the OP it seemed). This episode is like a 2/10 to me, maybe a 4 if you've never seen anything Berserk before. The rest of the series needs to be far above this to be good, and that just seems unlikely.
