Was about to drop this shit after i didn't know what the fuck was going on and it was just skipping.

Then i noticed it was the prologue and it made sense. Hopefully mc-kun pulls the sword out the stone and slays the dragons then fucks the qt princess.

Overall a very good first episode. The visuals are pretty.

I've read the LN. It's a pretty great adaptation. We lose some subtlety in the characters and a few important scenes but in exchange we get additional scene's of character development, great cinematography, great music, with great voice acting. It absolutely convey's the same story and same theme.

I recently replayed Xillia. While I know it has it's flaws, mainly the boring-ass overworld, endless dumb grinding and pretty unlikeable characters, the fightan was quite fun and X2 had some pretty cool level designs (that one solar farm with Aska, the futuristic ruins later).
Also you got rewards for doing stuff well in-battle, which motivated me to actually chain that fucking 10-link artes combo into a combined mystic arte and did a million damage which felt fucking awesome.

The main theme is understanding. "Defeating the big bad doesn't mean things will be alright and everything will be fixed, so what should I do instead?". This is where most JRPG fail, you have the hero and the evil guy, so you go on a quest to defeat him, you kill him and game is over, everyone lives happily forever just because.

This is presented midgame when you encounter the final boss in a random map. You have the option to fight him and defeat him, ending the game right there, but doing so when you haven't reached your answer means nothing will change and the world will still be fucked. You defeated him without a second thought because in your eyes he was bad and that's it.

Instead what Sorey does is travel the continent and by himself learns everything about the bad guy, what happened to him, what's happening to the world and what will happen if he's not stopped. He doesn't let anyone tell him second hand, but rather he goes out there and search for the answer himself.

That's why I like this game so much. Sorey is not a mindless hero like most JRPG protagonist.

Too bad the conclusion is still "We have to go murder him."

This is a game where humans afflicted by evil thoughts and bad deeds can literally become corrupted and turn into monsters. Simple enough, and fitting for a game about a messianic figure. Until Rose joins the party that is. Rose is a killer. An assassin. And she is presented as a figure of absolute morals. Rose is for all intents and purposes, the one whose moral guidelines the game presents as true. Rose admonishes Sorey for refusing to kill humans completely taken over by malevolence. See, you can't save humans taken over by the malevolence, you have to kill them, the game says. It's relentless pragmatism. You're only useful if you can get the job done, and done in the way it's supposed to be. Alisha is a hindrance, so Sorey ditches her. That act is unthinkable for any other Tales main character so far. The game explains that Rose is good because she thinks really well before killing people. Because of that she has no bad feelings while doing so. She is the judge, the jury and the executor. For intents and purposes, Rose is a sociopath. Lack of empathy is put on a pedestal. As long as you truly believe you have the moral High Ground, and feel nothing while doing so, killing is fine and pure. It's once again a game about helplessness, about doing what you have to do, but this time in a grim and more bizarely grounded mindset. It doesn't matter why humans turn evil, you're told you can't save them anymore, so you have to kill them. As long as you're the good guy, killing is fine. It's a sense of morality so childish, black and white and . In a game about corruption and people turning bad, the only true recourse is murder. You're told you have to fulfill a prophecy and you do it, no ifs and buts. You kill, because you have the moral High Ground.

Except Zestiria explores its themes sloppily. It masquerades as being more like earlier Tales games. You have to look beneath the surface to realize how messy the writing is. I don't think Zestiria intended to have such a dark message. I think the writing was so messy that it tried to be this optimistic save the world story, but the messy way in which it handled its characters and world turned into something far, far darker.
And Rose is a character that is just so ridiculous in how much the narrative agrees with her that you can't help but get the sense that unless you're born special, you're worthless.
I really hate it when a game tries to tell me one thing when in actuality it's telling me the opposite. That's what I really hated about Star Ocean 4. The same goes for Zestiria. The game tries to tell the player that Rose is so great. Rose is so amazing. Rose is always right.
But she's a sociopath. And in a world where the morality presented in Zestiria is the truth, honestly, the world wouldn't last long. Malevolence would take over the second the Shepherd looked away. Because regular humans are powerless without someone above them (seraph or shepherd) to save them. Humans can't do anything. Humans are worthless.

A world like that can't last long. Zestiria's world makes no sense whatsoever. It's a giant contradiction and would eventually just collapse onto itself.

It's nowhere as bad as they make it to be. People like to exaggerate its flaws a lot and see pairings where there are none. Overall it's a solid, fun game with lots of party banter. The skits, outerworld chat and post-battle scenes are hilarious.

These is my thoughts on the "real" answer (if Bamco were just 20% more honest):

We WERE originally gonna have Alisha be the main heroine, which is why you all saw her in the original promotions, why there's a figure of her, etc, etc. But as development went along and we got a better idea of what we wanted to do with the battle system, we realized "oh snap, Alisha... isn't really gonna work out, the system relies on fusing with these spirit people, but she can't even see them".

That's when we decided to come up with, or use a different human female character and give them an expanded role so they too can use the system to its full potential. But that put us in another dilemma, do we really need a human who CAN'T fuse when we already have two that do? That's when we began shifting Alisha out of the spotlight, we'd have hoped that this will prepare fans for when she kinda leaves.
