Because it was a really good family SOL in a time when the term SOL wasn't even conceived.

I read the manga as a kid. It was seriously good. All sorts of hilarious and bittersweet memories from a kid's viewpoint.

Both Shin chan and Chibi maruko are shows which greatly differ from their source manga. The chibimaruko-chan manga is pretty cynical and has while not really vulgar like Shin-chan, has humor which appeals to adults as well.
