How the fuck are there 4 timelines instead of just 3?

The 1st timeline with the primary dbz story following the end of the cell games.

2nd timeline where trunks kills cell before he ambushes him and steals his time machine to go back in time.

3rd timeline where cell kills trunks and goes back in time which is intertwined with the above timelines.

4th unseen timeline where trunks deactivates androids in the present and future and cell never emerges.

How the fuck does the 4th happen? Why doesn't it just lead to the 3rd timeline repeating itself since that is what trunks attempted to do there but failed?

Also, from the ep 50 previews goku black destroys 2nd timeline trunks time machine. They then bring out timeline 3 cell's thrashed time machine in that capsule. Wouldn't using this take them back to timeline 3 where no powerful beings exist anymore? Aren't the time machines directly linked to the timeline they came from?

The alternate universes don't work like that. They're 12 separated structures inside a bigger space. Divided in sets of 2 that mirror each other (having the exact same planets and races).

If you're talking about the timelines, then in recent games and such GT is usually regarded as a weird timeline where things went very differently. But that will likely never be touched in the anime.

Seeing how they literally CAN'T get stronger, is it really "unfair"? I mean, it'd be pathetic, both in-universe and as a part of a written story, but it's pretty clear that the series has fucked over Non-Saiyans.

Shit, at some point in the series, Tien and Piccolo were considered rivals for Goku. What a novel concept that is now.
The idea that Goku has outpaced his rivals via his training methods and dedication seems pretty sour when Super Saiyans came knocking on the door, and left everyone locked out.
