And the purpose is to make it look more like animated content. If something is slow enough then your brain fills in details that aren't there. Above some threshold your brain considers the motion real notices when something looks off.

Just read the manga, it's the best way to get into the story of berserk. I ended up watching the 90's anime and then reading the manga and that was fine too. I don't recommend starting with the movies though since they skip a ton of the story and a lot of interesting material. The 90's anime is pretty good though.
