It's a quick and easy way to set a story and introduce MC into harem genre without breaking the suspension of disbelieve.
And can set the atmosphere into various ages, from fantasy world with ancient magical devices, into sci-fi with advance technology.
More importantly this way you can create the Deus Ex Machina element without breaking the plot too much for the finale, with friendship power/ combine the harem power/ ancient power unlocked/etc.
