S1 was a pretty accurate representation of the novels. I'll argue that Burst is one of the best looking anime's that IMS has produced. Contrary to popular belief Burst did a decent job adapting the story of novels 4,5, and 7. According to the author, the publishers along with IMS are proud of the anime. S1 sold well. Burst at the very least sold above average. There really isn't enough novel content to make an S3 right now, but it defintely isn't out of the realm of possibility considering it's still one of IMS' most successful series.

Higher initial sales is usually pretty standard. Secondly consider the genre, it's not going to be selling 10k+ in the first week regardless of how good it is because of the genre it's stuck in. Thirdly those numbers are pulling profit regardless, they're well above both the frt line and the breaking even line. It's not a top 10 best seller, I wont deny that but it still sold well enough. This series actually has a great harem dynamic since all the girls that live with Basara are treated equally. There isn't any stupid harem hierarchy. The girls all get along with each other well and know how to share. Even Chisato, who circumvented the harem and became Basara's girlfriend/sex slave supports the harem. Although she has jealousy issues she knows she already has Basara's love.

As far as sex in concerned, if Basara was to have sex with someone other than Mio shit wouldn't hit the fan. She didn't freak out when she found out that Zest and Kurumi have Basara a blowjob. She more or less accepted it and was disappointed in herself for not being as dedicated to Basara.

Chisato has never had a plot induced cockblock prevented her from having sex with Basara. The author wrote Yuki's out of the story in volume 9, and has promised a Mio a sex scene in volume 10. I'm not the biggest Mio fan, but have enjoyed her development throughout the series. She's one of the few main heroines in these harem series that I've learned to appreciate.

I used to be a big fan of DxD and enjoyed it up until S3. I've developed a dislike for Issei. He isn't an interesting character and his perverted nature is just annoying for me. The harem size in DxD is also just too big for me to the point where it's hard to care much about the characters. What converted me to Shinmai was OVA1. It released around the same time the DxD born bath special with Grayfia did and just showed how much of a beta Issei is compared to Basara. DxD is a fun series, but I grew out of it.

The anime is actually half decent. S1 is a faithful adaptation of novels 1-3. Burst was somewhat rushed since it adapted volumes 4,5,and 7 into 10 episodes. IMS also pussied out and neutered most of the lewd scenes in Burst compared to what happens in the novels. I would watch the anime only because volume 7 isn't entirely translated. The overall story gets much better in volumes 8 and 9 of the novels.
