At the time it was huge, and it's important to realize that without its massive success, we wouldn't have had twelve years of Precure, or maybe even not nearly as much (fighting) Mahou Shoujo in general. At the time, it was THE show to watch (for kids) and the way it did battle grit and the partnership/friendship between Nagisa and Honoka were massive selling points.

Almost everything that was done in FW has been redone many, many more times since then (both within and outside of Precure), since that's the kind of imitation that comes with success, and whether others have done it better or not is largely a matter of opinion. I'm not sure it was a timeless work of art, but it wasn't just innovative, it was pretty well executed as well.

tl;dr: 12 years ago, fuck yeah, best thing ever. Nowadays, it's still pretty good.

If you've seen FW, you'll probably have already noticed. Despite the fact that it's supposed to be both of them, Nagisa takes the front and becomes the important one very quickly. Her stories matter most, her feelings are explored most, and there was never anything even close to approaching a role reversal of FW42, sadly.

She's basically the third cure in MH, or about as much attention as the last cure in any other series.

You're completely missing the point of the show.
It was all about Nagisa dealing with her normal teenage problems and having to juggle them with her new super hero problems.
The thing is that there must be a sempai she's in love with, and it's gotta be the real deal, because that's a typical teenage problem.

This is also why we see everything from Nagisa's perspective and not Honoka's, and why Nagisa is the main character and not the two of them despite the name of the show; Honoka is NOT a normal girl.

That's not really fair, pretty much all of the cures change over the course of their series, it's kind of hard not to when you save the world. Obviously some get much more dramatic redemption story arcs to go with their development, and not just the former villains, but also the ones who are bouncing back from horrible mistakes/tragedy.

Whether FujiP is a loose end that should've been tied is debatable anyhow, because, surprisingly enough, Precure isn't always the kind of coming of age story that demands that sort of closure. He may be more like a part of Nagisa's profile that reminds you of the kind of person that she is, a little like a hobby doesn't have to be elevated to the next level over the course of the show to remind you that the character is moving forwards. There are definitely changes on the same order of significance as that for some people, though.

A lot of fans don't share the same kind of experience and scope as the people who made it in the first place. It's great when they used aspects of things they love to inspire their own work, but when they are just repeating a formula they like "because that's how the franchise is" it quickly loses all its luster. 0079 was a big deal because it was a novel mashup of Yamato-inspired scifi and super robot shows, but a show like IBO got lukewarm receptions because it was just going through the motions of a Gundam season. It's not entirely at fault of the fans, it just happens to long-running franchises where the original creators have become distant, but at that point it becomes more beneficial to have someone bring his own ideas and style (such as Yonetani on the Braves series) than someone in love with what it's already doing.

Originally Precure drew from a lot of sources. Toku shows, sentai-styled magical girl shows, and the classical magical girl setting (which is a lot more SoL oriented. That part is important because it disappeared as Precure went on). Now it's pretty obvious it is only doing things that are "Precure" enough for the franchise. Any innovation is done within the basic framework and is very shallow, like HaCha. End result is a product like Maho.

It probably depends on whether you think the problem is fundamentally really in the fandom, or (more likely) because this is a franchise (and market in general) in which the pool of ideas only innovates when absolutely necessary, then narrows again as older successful ideas are imitated because they're the best (and safest) investment.

Take a look at this episode, number 35. The guy was pretty forward and such, but he showed actual interest in Nagisa and admired her for actual believable reasons. Unlike that other guy.

However, he's not right for her because he's wasn't a "perfect" knight in shining armour like Fuji. But the thing is that nobody is "perfect" and in life you have to compromise. And having the episode like that isn't teaching anyone anything.
