He was already causing destruction through the universe before he came to Earth, so destroying Earth/the Saiyans wasn't his primary objective: he could've easily just destroyed the planet and been done with it, but that he's gone down to systematically kill everyone makes it seem like there's something more personal about it to him. He also knows the Kamehameha, and since it's not a move Future Trunks really ever uses, I'm thinking he must've seen it before he came to Future Earth.

Trunks, who was the third strongest z fighter in the Cell games, had 3 years after that to prep for Cell, clearly trained and increased power. We also know Trunks reached SS2.

Why is it surprising. Trunks wasn't THAT much weaker than Goku during the cell games, and in 7 years Goku went from SS to SS3
