Despite popular belief, Goku acted fairly responsible during the Buu arc, what with 'you guys should be ready for any new threats if I'm not there'. Remember, he didn't want to fuck around with Vegeta until Vegeta started killing people, and when Vegeta pretends to have regained his senses, Goku immediately jumps to stopping him.

Literally everything Goku does in that arc revolves around putting a stop to Buu, or trying to make the best out of a bad situation. When Goku and Vegeta go up against Buu after he's absorbed everyone, Goku's the one that has to tell Vegeta that they don't have a chance in hell, while Vegeta is going GRRR MY PRIDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
