The head of the Ackermans also sacrificed himself for the survival of the rest of the clan. Ymir is 70+ old (she was about 8-10 when she turned into a titan.. The conversation with old Ackerman happened around 35 years before current events, so it's plausible. Ackermans were hated and killed, Ymir said she was hated just for being born.

And then there's this mural which shows humans fighting other humans with two flags and a centerpoint. It's all very interesting really.
