First you need to watch the fourth film, this brings you up to speed on the premise of Dragon Ball. Then you start on GT, as the first post said. You might be tempted to read the wiki about who the characters are, but that will only spoil it for you. I know too many who did that.

After GT, start at episode 1 of DB. It's so much fun. After that it's on to Dragon Ball Super, the new series!

Drop watching DBZ. The author tried mixing genres and allmost butchered the entire franchise, along with the characters.
