The people seemed quite nice and welcoming, but we've essentially had people from the university taking care of us and chaperoning us around most of the time. I think it would be hard to find your way around as a complete stranger without knowing the language. I'm Polish and know a bit of Russian - which is apparently still widely known there - and our hosts knew English. In particular I've really had fun at the wedding reception even though we've lost our host for a while and could barely communicate. We also went to some clubs in Tashkent one weekend, it really didn't feel like a Muslim city in that regard - beer, bellydancers, very relaxed atmosphere. Lots of police on streets for some reason.

There weren't many tourists around even in the hot spots in Samarkand, it's hard to say why.

The airport at Tashkent was rubbish, probably worst I've ever seen and I've been to India.

I found that really touching. It takes skill for an author to pull off a platonic relationship with non explicit/graphic hints of strong intimacy to come which I felt was done there very well. Never mind that that is barely ever done in modern media to begin with.

Plus it was about a woman who was, while having all her needs attended to, was just very, very lonely and found a kindrid spirit in another woman. Quite beautiful to me but I'm a romantic at heart.

A big deal of mangakas don't show up much, even the most famous ones hardly have photos online.
Take Kentaro Miura for example, the only pic we have is a one he took for a interview way back in the day. This seems common among magakas, Masashi Kishimoto, Inio Asano, Akira Toriyama, Tite Kubo, all of them have this "one picture only in the internet".
Also, their schedule is fucking insane, they hardly have any momento for themselfs
