Looking back at it, Bert was getting development for a while now and he's come a long way, so that doesn't really give him plot armor. Sure he's the colossal titan and the icon of the series so he deserves MC-level screentime, but for any other character that should be considered enough. /snk/ is legit the only place where I see people get genuinely and actively triggered by Armin's canonical intelligence tho, even when there's nothing particularly ridiculous or unconcievable to it.

I already talked about it a few weeks ago, but it's not that hard to see why someone like him would be considered very valuable to the SC: Armin's only reliable weapon as a soldier is his smarts, so he'll tend to be thinking 24/7.
Since he approaches the issues he's faced with in a similar manner to that of a reader who's detached from the situation, it makes sense that some of us would not consider his plans/ideas impressive in the least because those are ideas anyone could come up with if given the proper amount of enough time, insight and hindsight.

But the thing that puts Armin above the rest is that in a setting where none of these are affordable, he's still able to form those ideas regardless.That's why in a life-threatening environment where immediate survival is number #1 concern and occupies most minds, someone's who's capable of thinking of all the possible ramifications of any observation he makes is pretty damn useful.

One also needs to take into account the fact that the SL get very few recruits every year: statistically speaking, you should expect the number of actually bright kids who'd be stupid enough to join them to be close to zero or zero. No wonder why having people like Armin (or Hanji and Erwin in their time) would be seen as a blessing.


As for his appeal, then I guess some people do enjoy the idea of a smart kid with an increasingly messed up moral compass struggling to find value in himself and understanding what the notion of sacrifice truly entails.
All characters in SnK have some kind of appeal going for them: with a bit of open-mindedness it's not hard to see.
