You can technically do both I guess, like Akira did. It was by far the best anime ever made at the time, but it was a box office flop which killed a bunch of companies, and made every other anime look like shit in comparison, hence adversely affecting everything else.

i probably wouldn't have dropped an adaptation if i liked the source though
