I can't seem to distinguish the difference between using に vs を. Tae Kim's definition of the two are similar in my perspective. Are they interchangable? Can anyone clear me up on how these particles work? Perhaps a layman's explanation. I'm just that autistic and english isn't my first language.

I'm too apathetic to unsubscribe. I don't even come here anymore to be honest I just wanted to convey to SOMEONE that there was a sad failure over there without being banned and downvoted and shit. Guess I will unsubscribe now though. All the actually interesting language learning posts are on /r/languagelearning anyhow.

に is used for direction and location and shit like that, so it's used with action verbs that show movement to somewhere like with 歩く or 走る or that show location of something like いる

As a fellow non-english native, I'll try:

私は手紙を書いた。
I wrote *A* letter.

私はあなたに手紙を書いた。
I wrote YOU a letter.
(lit. to you)

Think of に as a sense of direction, "to" place (not necessarily physical place), indirect subject.

To him.
To that place.
Towards me.
Towards there.

>>142966456
I wouldn't worry about the non slurred version, all you need to think is:
なんつって: joking way of "it got like that"
つっちゃった: suddenly ended up (in a regretful like tone)
>>
>>142965902
no, I made them up

right now, without learning other grammar, particles will probably remain mysterious to you no matter how much you try to understand them alone

just keep going and try to tackle specific examples instead of asking vague questions like "what does 'to' mean," because it can mean a lot

>>142966614

Nah, just the reading of the word itself and the meaning. You'll slowly get the individual kanji by seeing them pop up in multiple different words by context

What's the deal with the predictable response to sperg out whenever an anon does something like post their handwriting? Time and time again you see these predictable responses and even sometimes arguments over how the handwriting isn't legible or whatnot. Have these anons had any experience with what natives have no problems with being able to read? Pic related is a good example that if you took the text and arranged it aa to appear written on something like paper with a pen, would cause the usual dull kneejerk responses. Why are anons quick to hold handwriting up to unrealistic standards of normality yet you don't see people sperging out over ever awkwardly typed post in Japanese in these threads; something that has a direct negative impact on the whole communication part of language.

What's the deal?

finishing 10 new cards of dojg takes more time than core2k, kanjidamage, and yotsubato vocab deck combined
>>
>>142978084
DJT is a blessing and a curse. It's good to have a place where you can discuss different approaches and ask questions, but it's very easy to just slack off and talk (or argue, as if often the case) about learning Japanese rather than actually doing it.
>>
>>142978284
Then don't do it. Just look stuff up in the DoJG when you need to. The grammar will stick better when you're seeing it in a meaningful context rather than bland example sentences in a textbook anyway.
>>
>>142978385
あんたは間違いない
>>
>>142978429
Not him, but a lot of grammar is vague as fuck and often times you don't know which kana is part of the default grammar structure and which part isn't. Having seen it at least once before makes it easier to reference is again when you need it. And once you get out of the DBJG cards the example sentences are pretty good practice for reading comprehension anyway so it's not like the time is wasted.
>>

Do you guys have some app setup to study/read LNs or something like that in your phones? I'm using android.

I'm currently reading in the PC, using KanjiTomo (OCR) because my kanji sucks, and EDICT (KanjiTomo's and another software) for unknown words.

I'll need a long break away from the PC so I'm looking if there's anything similar that could allow me to keep reading in the phone.
For now I only got Google Input, using Akebi for dictionary, then every kanji/word I type/draw there and get the definition, but it's slow as hell since I do this for practically every non N4 kanji...

Thanks in advance!

Kindle paperwhite's tap and hold dictionary search is very seamless and unobtrusive. (You can set up j-j and j-e dics) This helps a lot when doing tons of reading or reading material that's above your current level. You can't quite get the same seamlessness with android.
I agree they have a more comfortable screen for reading as well.

Kindles are also less versatile than an android tablet, for example they're absolute shit at displaying pdfs. But for reading novels in japanese (or any language really) they are the absolute best.

If you have the money, I recommend you get one. It was hugely helpful to me.

One question though, I'm looking on how to read from JPGs and I didn't find an "easy" answer (lots of convert to/from though), and all my LNs are in JPGs or images... is Kindle like Android where I can simply copy/paste in a folder and start reading?

>>
>>142982766
The subject of the sentence is her, not the bento.

から is often used with either side left out.
ーだからさ、僕はノーマルだ
- (I'm telling you/Like I said before), I'm not a homo.
ーはいはい、やっとくから。
- Yeah yeah, I'll do it (so it's fine/so bugger off).
Essentially you fill in the rest with your imagination, in a sense. You'll pick up these expressions naturally, just watch cartoons.

Send to Kindle auto-detects word boundaries so you only have to click in the general area of the word. I have no problems doing that. Do you have some very old model or something?

That's strange. This is not my experience with the paperwhite at all.

It works great! Every once in a while you do need to adjust the auto selected word but that's it. It's not slow at all.
The J-J dic is perfectly fine imo, of course you can get better and more specialized epwing dictionaries, that doesn't make the default one bad.
J-E works fine.

When I tried the kindle app on android (about a year and a half or so ago), the problem I had was that the pop up window of the word search was too small for most definitions and they were all cut short. (not a small tablet) This was obviously really bad, but maybe it's fixed now? Otherwise it was fine.

Sentences 2 and 3 are what's killing me. Does it have the same translation to sentence 1? Is it just differently phrased?

There is no reason in any scenario to be doing that much. 20-30 new cards a day, and spend the rest of your time reading.
>>
>>143005271
The more normal speed is 10 cards per second. Are you wasting time trying to remember some cards for a longer time? If you don't get them in 10-20 seconds then just hit again and move on. Your stats won't be as pretty but you will be more efficient and waste less time.

>>
>>143005495
Yeah you are right. On the other hand I don't like to look words up all the time. So usually I read, translate words meanwhile and add them to a textfile and add them later to Anki. If I then do later more new cards in Anki I will faster finish my mined words. This means I have to look less words up. This is basically the reason I do a lot of words now.
>>143005559
You mean after 1400 cards - 70 new a day - they don't grow as fast as before?
>>
>>143005645
They'll keep growing past that only if you keep adding new cards for years. With the pace you're going at it probably won't be a problem.
>>
>>143005353
That's like counting the number 900 to 999 as 100 separate names. The Japanese have a designated symbol just for that power of 10. You really don't see what I'm getting at here?
>>
>>143005645
Yeah it's a logarithmic increase. There's no definite point after which they grow slower/stop growing (unless you stop adding new cards). Just every single day you get a little bit more (on average of course). But every day the increase is smaller.

Of course this only works if your maximum interval is huge. If it's year or something like that then the growth will be much quicker.

Also, in Japanese you only need only 17 words for big numbers (starting from 10^4). In English you need 15 words just to get to tredecillion (starting from thousand). Later it becomes kinda regular, but still some things are irregular / you need new words like "vigintillion".

If your beef is with Japanese having symbols for 15 big numbers, how are you taking the language having symbols for thousands of other words?

It's more regular only after you learn those 15 words (from thousand to tredecillion=10^42), because it lets you create fucking big ass numbers. In fact more than 15, because e.g. vigintillion and centillion are irregular, so you need them learn them too.

In Japanese you only need to learn 17 words for big numbers, because it ends at 10^68.

Yeah there is a difference, but it doesn't make Japanese counting harder to learn as you imply. It would make it harder if they had names for numbers up to 10^303.

What are you hung up on?

How can the very first post someone makes be considered damage control? Are you using words you don't really understand?

>How can the very first post someone makes be considered damage control? Are you using words you don't really understand?
It's totally possible to conduct damage control in one's first post. In fact it happens all the time; people start disagreeing with something from an extreme point of view and then throw in some subjective comparison they can fall back on. Not that they do it in advance as some sort of conscious stratagem, defusing one's own arguments to seem less extreme instead of making the whole point less extreme in the first place is just a thing people do.

No, seriously, if you have a real reason then by all means start practicing but if it's some vague "maybe I'll need it some day" then don't torture yourself.
It's easier to learn when you actually can read what the fuck you wrote, anyway.

Different methods work for different people. Some save time by writing kanji down and thus having to relearn them less often, others would do better not to spend time on writing and instead going over the kanji again.
Either way the best method to remember kanji is exposure, so read a lot of native material and you'll be fine no matter what your other learning methods are.

No need to be worried. As long as you get familiar with kanji the exact translation isn't much of a problem. It's impossible to convey the exact nuance for most kanji anyway so you'll have to iron out your understanding through reading either way, whether it's a big or a small disparity in understanding.

But it's not just a matter of subtle nuances, the core translations are plain misleading at times. For example, 曲がり角 is translated as just "corner", which makes it sound like just a synonym of 角, but its real meaning is "street corner".

It makes things more confusing than they could be, and now I keep checking words on jisho and editing cards when the translation feels too ambigous.

Like, wouldn't using JMdict translations be an objective improvement? It may sound like I'm sperging out about an Anki deck, but as far as I know, most anons use core to build up the foundations of their vocabulary, so accuracy is a big deal here.

Could be wrong but I don't think anyone ever says this. It seems grammatically incorrect because kureru is the verb for giving from the perspective of the reciever. So you can't ask someone to "kureru" something to you, I think.
