I don't think they could pull off the atmosphere. The anime simply looked too clean, and it didn't give off the brutality that the LN had. The hug had almost no impact in the anime, but in the novels it was gut wrenching.

The matter does not come up again until v10c3, where he thinks of the boy (Aura), probably to differentiate them in his mind as "the girl who dresses like a boy" and "the girl who dresses like a girl".
