>>
>>142886082
Well I mostly encounter it as "to decide to do something", it shows that someone has made the decision that they want to do a verb but haven't yet done it, or are just about to do it

Most of the time I see it in the context of "just as he decided to stick his dick in the hole, a knife came out and stabbed in the urethra", that sort of shit

It has other uses though that's just the one I think is most common

I don't think so, and I'm not fluent.

If I had to say what SEEMS to be the hardest thing about it is that people can't try to think in their language's equivalents, japanese words and particles in general have a very distinct meaning but that's probably unlike anything in YOUR language.

When you start trying not to think what it means in your language, but "thinking" in japanese, everything makes much more sense.

>>142891648
Finno-Ugric connection is a complete lie fabricated to destroy our true ancestry. The origin of Hungarians is much further to the east, as we are descendants of Japanese explorers coming to the Asian mainland. This is also the reason why it's so easy for Hungarians to learn Japanese, as we are simply remembering what we already knew once thousands of years ago.

>>
>>142891581

Tbh I think wanikani is not actually that awful, but four things hold it back.

1. Too slow. You cannot dictate your own pace.
2. Free resources are better. If you want to do a radical-mnemonic method then koohii is superior due to the community stories for basically every kanji. If you want to learn vocab you are better off mining it. If you want an SRS Anki is better than theirs.
3. Hard to transition. When you finish all wanikani has to offer, you are left without a solid path to go down.
4. Costs money. I suppose this is superfluous since it is worse than free alternatives anyway, but it is not free, unlike anki & friends.

All of this said, while it is an inferior resource in almost every way, you could do a lot worse. It is not comparable to something like Rosetta Stone, for example.

What is it supposed to be? Some steps seem like the shit all agglutinative languages e.g. Japanese do (like the longest words on the very right), but some transitions like 'to visit' into 'to use' can't possibly be because of some grammar rule. Seems more like maybe they are the etymological roots or something? If that is the case then you can make similar graphs in every agglutinative language.

I checked out that reddit "V2K" deck. Seems not too bad, except:

1. No example sentences. One could argue this is not a big deal but I think it is important for newbies to have some context for the words since they likely will not be doing any actual reading yet and will otherwise have nothing to connect the words to actual usage.
2. The card format has furigana on the front which makes it pretty pointless. That can easily be changed though.

I think the ideal newbie deck would just be a proper reordering of Core to not be shit.

Leave them and delete one at the time as you encounter them.

If they all have one field empty (shouldn't it be the reason they don't have the other card type?), or one field with the same annotation or something like this (how do you know which ones they are?) you could try filtering only them in browser and deleting.

Move all the cards of the type you don't won't into another deck. This won't delete or move the whole note, and if Kanji Grid can be limited to only one deck then your problem would be solved, but you would be forever left with one additional deck.

It's the opposite, unfortunately. The ones which I need to delete don't have a counterpart of the other card type because the other card type would have an empty field for the front side of the card.

I'm a fucking idiot. There was an empty field. I don't know what I was thinking when I typed this out.

Anyway, problem solved. I just had to search

I've been doing the KanjiDamage anki deck for a few months and I'm 1500 cards in but I'm starting to feel like I'm getting a lot more benefit from vocab decks instead recently. Do you guys think it would be a waste to drop the KD deck at this point or should I just push through?

>>
>>142895347
Recognition = see a kanji and recognise what it is (kanji -> meaning)
Production = see the meaning of a kanji and produce said kanji from memory (meaning -> kanji)

I'm pretty sure when you're doing KD or RTK, you're supposed to only do one method or the other. Heisig tells people in RTK to go the production route for reviewing kanji.
>>
>>142895321
Yes, individual grammar points are simple to read about and understand. Now try actually reading native material.

>>142895343
Then what was difficult? You can look up any word or kanji by yourself. If you're having difficulty understanding the meaning of a sentence you have no choice but to find a Japanese person or someone who's at a higher level than you.

Someone asked the same question on Rebbit and there are a few interesting responses. The point is that Japanese isn't as simple as a lot of people, especially beginners, like to say it is. On the other hand, a lot of Europeans like to brag about how complex the grammar is for their languages are but the literature is easier to "reverse engineer".

Sorry, I have no idea. I only own a basic phone with a little screen and a keypad. All it can do is make and receive calls, so I'm not familiar with the mobile version of Anki.

If I had to guess, you can probably still use the deck browser on the mobile version and use it to search through your deck. If so, then type this in the search field:
>card:[type that you want to suspend]
e.g.
>card:recognition

Then I imagine there should be some means of selecting every card that comes up in the results ("edit" > "select all" maybe?). Then once you've selected all the cards, you should be able to suspend them by just clicking "suspend".

It's nothing to do with tags. Cards have a type, even if there's only one type of card. If it didn't work then probably the name of the card type is just different in the deck you're using.

When you're in the deck browser, there should be a column titled "card". Look in there and it will have the names of the card types. When you figure out which one you want to suspend, just type in:
>card:[type that you want to suspend]
>>

This is normal. Reading is mentally tiring when you have to carefully consider every single sentence to understand anything at all. As you get faster, it'll get easier, and you'll be able to read more before you get tired. Just keep at it. If so, it's because they don't have other opportunities for relationships with women due to their living conditions, and the prostitutes there provide them with conversation and compliments in addition to sex. This means a lot of the men forget that the women are just doing their jobs and actually start to fall in love with the women. It kinda makes sense if you consider how intimate their "relationship" is.

The brothels, like the church, provide a nice way for people to escape from how awful life is in their part of the city, and are part of how ジーク maintains power. It's a societal commentary on the means of suppressing social discontent.

This is one of those occasions where an author with 0 budget strikes out on his own and simply writes a novel into a VN engine without using any sprites, unique BGM, etc. The backgrounds are real-life photographs with no editing. It is simply a novel you advance through clicking, not an actual visual novel with sprites and choices, and thus I consider it Real Literature.

Lack of pictures/sound. And what is your point then? Are all VNs with large NVL sections considered literature?

Well, in the first place, this is a semantic discussion you're taking too seriously considering I was obviously fucking around (I even capitalized Real Literature). That said... if you take the things which distinguish NVLs from novels, and give them the minimum possible attention (real life photograph backgrounds, no sprites, open source BGM, etc), then what you have is the closest a VN can come to a novel, hence me calling it one. The only difference between this and a normal novel, really, is that it's on my PC and some piano is playing in the background.

Are any of the japanese IME's for linux other than ibus worth trying? Ibus (anthy) works great, but it doesn't work with steam at all, where I tend to chat with a friend who is also learning japanese so it's kind of a pain not being able to type it.

>I still don't like the idea of jumping straight into core2k though. I get the feeling, based on what a lot of people post here, that people who start just with core decks often develop the habit of just recognizing the "general shape" of the word and don't really learn to identify kanji. I think that's really bad cause it seems like it will compromise your ability to organically expand your vocab later on when you start reading.

This is 100% true. I fucking swear, if you don't write kanji out you WILL end up just remembering the shape and relying on context a lot of the time. You'll still be competent enough to read and whatnot, but distinguishing individual kanji *outside of context* will be impossible. #1 - Did nothing but 10 new cards in anki for over a year. At the time I thought I was doing anki for hours but I was actually tabbing out and accumulating time not working. Ended up being, I did like 5-10 minutes of work a day but thought I was doing over an hour. Because of this (and #2) despite studying for a pretty dang long time (over two years), I have not nearly as much to show for it as a peer who started at the same time.
#2 - Didn't start really start reading for 11 months. For 6 months I did nothing but Core, and then 5 months I "read manga", but in the end I only read 10 volumes of manga over all 5 months. I just didn't read much even though on a day-to-day basis I thought I was doing good. After 11 months I picked up my first VN and realized just how damn slow I had been going.

tl;dr spent a whole year of active studying doing nothing but 10 new cards a day in anki.
>>142903499
KD only has 1.8k kanji so I just wouldn't bother with it. Not to mention I'm not concerned with memorizing onyomi or anything, that comes from vocab easy. It's the writing and recalling the exact radicals and their position which would have been a significant help.

Seems someone just added it to the resources document.

>KanjiDamage+ (anki deck) The deck was created to solve some of the problems with KanjiDamage - namely the often criticized style of mnemonics. They're still there but often toned down or changed to something more logical/less crude. Some mistakes are fixed. Furthermore, the kanji base got significantly expanded, now the deck has 2136 cards (~1900 kanji, rest are radicals).

How does it compare to RTK + koohii mnemonics? Sounds like it's designed to be very similar.

Personally, I hated thinking up mnemonics and even when I settled for one from koohii it took me too long and too much mental energy to decide on one I liked, so I've opted for the brute force method. I'm only ~1 week in but already I can tell that it's less effective (I hadn't failed a single card at the time when I quit RTK, whereas my retention with this deck is 'only' 90%). Even so, the sheer simplicity of this approach makes it much more bearable for me. 156 days to go :^)
>>
>>142905337
I haven't used RTK + Koohi but I can tell you this deck works very well. I started around 2-4 months ago (NEET sense of time sucks...) and it's only gotten easier as I went. I'm around 1100 cards in, now. Sometimes there's the odd nonsensical, excessively complex or just plain stupid mnemonic in KD+, but ironically I've found that actually makes particular cards stand out more and be more memorable.

I'm going to be doing a reinstall of my distro next week and installing KDE (which uses the Qt framework) as my DE, so since I'll have to figure out how to set up Japanese input at that time, I'll document the process and add it to the resources document (assuming nobody else has done it by then).

Honestly though, I'm a bit confused by the "Don't forget to configure Qt for input in Qt apps" line. This makes it sound like it's supposed to be instructions for people who are using a GTK framework DE but have Qt framework software installed, but right now I'm using a GTK DE and have Qt software installed and I haven't had to take any additional steps to make my IME work with the Qt software. I also tried searching my distro's repositories for "qtconfig" and there is no such package in them which makes me wonder if the entire

Both is a good idea. KD+ helps with recognizing the meanings of kanji in new kunyomi words, and both reading and pronunciation for new onyomi words. It makes kanji more memorable in general, which is something useful to have when there's so many, at least when you're starting out.

I'm looking at lyrics to a song and the first line goes
>ケータイのメール
>予定ちょっと早めに着替えた
Is ケータイのメール implying the second line is a text the singer is receiving? or is it just that the singer is getting a text and then the second line is her actually having "planned to change her clothes a little earlier" because of it? is tht even the correct translation of the second line?

it doesn't help that the next line is some English: "Don't worry lucky sunshine"

the second line is in past tense though so you can infer it means she changed earlier than planned

Is the 2k/6k Tae Kim deck littered with errors? The only one I ever caught onto being wrong was 病気. Are there really 12 fucking ways to say go, come, or go and come in this clusterfuck language?
>>
>>142915956
>The only one I ever caught onto being wrong was 病気.
Please elaborate, I only started a while ago and I haven't gotten that card yet.
>>
>>142915998
the solution is びょうき (Illness) (at least that's what Jisho says)
whatever it was before was obviously wrong
>>
>>142916266
Did the deck say it read as something else than byouki? Anyway, this is the first time I hear of a Tae Kim 2k/6k deck. Maybe you should just use the tried and true regular 2k/6k deck instead.

You just gotta take it easy. Get a good night's sleep. Stretch in the morning. Have some tea and study at your own pace. Enjoy the learning process. You're only doing what you want to do.

But if your headaches are a problem then first see if it's your lifestyle that needs fixing (lack of sleep/working too much/whatever) and if it's not that maybe you should see someone about it.

I don't know how my friends that can't speak English even attempt to learn 日本語 they literally use those 皆の日本語 books from hell that are outdated as fuck because apparently there isn't any other mainstream Spanish sources to learn Japanese.
Which imo is false anyway but when I showed them my Spanish copy of RTK they laughed at me.
できない
>>
>>142917780
lots of people attempt to learn languages

not as many people succeed
>>
>>142917780
It's not really that there isn't mainstream Spanish sources to learn Japanese. What happens is that they are harder to find and a lot of them really outdated.

I was looking into some japanese courses in my city since I find grammar to be kind of a pain in the ass to understand but I only found 2 and both of them were in private institutions and charged $300+ per unit and you had to buy the materials.

So I just said fuck that and kept doing core2k6k. Grammar is still a bitch but I imagine it'll get better when I start reading more.

Man it must suck to be an ESL. Learning Japanese was hard enough, imagine having to do it all over again for English because your own language is some useless cultureless piece of shit.
>>
>>142918361
english probably isn't nearly as hard

there's no kanji and half of the internet is in english
>>
>>142918361
I think the saddest part is when they pretend that either their native tongue helps because of basic pronunciation, or the fact they've learned a similarly routed language before through exposure means they have some advantage when it comes to another language.

If my parents wasted my childhood on a pointless language, I'd just refuse to talk to them.
>>
>>142918450
>tfw native english speaker and also know a second language from birth that helps with basic pronunciation
best of both worlds
>>
>>142918361
Not really. It was easy as fuck and I mostly picked it up throguh exposure. I don't even use my native language anymore.
>>
>>142918450

>>
>>142917988
But it's true, there are barely any resources in Spanish that are worth it. You can see a fuckload of websites around for learning Japanese that are pure shit since their Spanish is also shit. How can you trust those fags to teach you something?
And in the end there are barely resources for intermediate or advanced things, if any at all, so one way or another you either move to English/Chinese based learning materials or you're pretty much fucked.

That said, you made a good move anon, don't spend a single penny in courses that go at a snail's pace and keep working hard by yourself.

Also >>142917780 I think the 皆の日本語 books are pretty decent in terms of basic grammar, so by the time you finish the second book you're ready to start reading, just have a quick read of Tae Kim for informal shit and you're ready to go.
>>
>>142918441
>>142918516
I guess that's a fair point, since their languages are so completely useless and contribute nothing to the world, it's pretty easy for them to learn English since they're constantly exposed to it. I'm sure if Japanese imageboards weren't gaijin-blocked, slow as fuck and painful to navigate I would be getting a lot more exposure to casual internet talk than I do.
>>
>>142918080
Buyfag thread. It also depends on where you live.
>>
>>142918361
Learning English was more far easier than learning Japanese. Because materials for learning English is more easier to get than Japanese, and also English is "international" language so it's compulsory subject in school.

You still can sync it. Anki can store your account data on their server if you sync with AnkiWeb.

Are there really people so retarded that they don't sync in case their hard drive dies suddenly? Or do they copy Anki folder manually every day to some external storage?

No, basic DoJG is only 200 cards, 600 is all 3 volumes.

Yeah, some pages cover more than one topic, but some cover only one. It was my rough estimate after looking at it. I counted again, but it's still less than 200 topics. Still way less than DJG deck.
