Can someone explain ほど in a simple manner to me?

I don't know how to think about it, there's like a million examples but they're like all different ways to use it, isn't there a simple way of thinking that fits it all?

For example, this sentence I found when I was reading now:
> あそこまでされて何もなかった事に出来るほど
> 大人じゃねえぞ!

In this example, it's doing practically... nothing there, right?
The meaning I got from it is something like "If I can pretend nothing happened after having all that done to me..."
"I/that wouldn't be an adult."

I tried to think about it as a "balance" before, like A <(ほど)> B, but I think that suits 方 only, I don't know how to think about ほど...

>Which one is top and which one is bottom, I don't want to know
Am I getting this right? It doesn't really seem to "fit", not to mention Yotsuba replies to the line as though it was supposed to be offensive to her, but I can't find any alternate meanings for まい.

The scanlation says "Which is the top and which is the bottom? You'll never know.", but I have no idea where they're getting "You'll never know." from.

Does anyone know of a japanese translation of an english book (or english translation of a japanese book) where the japanese text has an audio recording? I thought it would be cool to read the english first, to understand what is going on, and then proceed to listening to the audio while reading the japanese text.

Well, thinking (feeling) now, I think it's because it works... reversed?
The ほど in that example is applied to the following part, the adult one... but that's only when it's a negative sentence, right?

Using an example from another site:
> 彼奴ほど強い
"As strong as him"

In this case it's the preceding sentence because it's not a negative...

Even if I try "feel" this makes my feelings confused as fuck

>>
>>142858228
Stop caring about stats for young cards.
Anki will show you the words you don't remember until you get them (or until they get blocked for being a leech).
Low retention rate just increases the amount of reviews you get. If the review load gets to high add less or no new cards, if you still want to learn more, add more cards.

If some characters are annoying enough to write that there are generally accepted simplified versions of them, why doesn't Japan's government just call the current version obsolete and say the simplified version is the correct, modern version?

Mainland China simplified a bunch of characters with no problems (as far as I know) and Japan simplified some post-WWII as well, so the precedent exists to do it.

I didn't put as much hours (I think) yet, it's been about two months and a little since I started, but being able to save stuff like this (and understand, although with the help of OCR for many still unknown kanjis) already made it totally worth.

>follow stroke order
One of the things RTK has taught me well. I'm pretty faithful to stroke orders.
>>
>>142860420
Characters should be fairly square in proportion. The vertical length of the characters can vary a little, but the horizontal width should be as consistent as possible from one character to the next.
>>
Be honest, if even the beginning of Tae Kims grammar stuff confuses the fuck out of me and I can't complete the practice exercises is there any hope? Am I supposed to re read each page like 30 times for it to sink in?
>>
>>142860339
Well, what can I do? I learned most of what I know from anime/listening, besides the kanas I knew practically nothing.
>>
>>142860815 (submitted too early by accident)
You might try turning your notebook on its side so that the lines on the page force you to keep your characters to a certain width rather than a certain height, though when doing this you should of course try to avoid making your characters too much longer than they are wide.
>>
>>142860863
You're not supposed to sit on any lesson, just read the book quickly and then read compelling material daily.

Repeat for 5 years and you'll be ok.
>>
>>142860728
well "readable" is honestly not that high of a bar
following stroke order should make the kanji identifiable even if it's scribbly or a little deformed
>>
>>142860863
You shouldn't expect to memorise everything from the guide you're reading, but if you're not even understanding it then that's a problem.

Maybe Tae Kim's explanations just aren't working for you for whatever reason, so you might want to try another guide like Imabi and see if that makes more sense to you.
>>
>>142860863
don't waste your time on the practice exercises

Is there an Anki add-on for synchronizing field contents when switching a note type?

I have two note types I want to switch a lot between, but the fields don't match up. E.g.:
on note type 1 the field A is on position ä4,
on note type 2 the field A is on position #6.

If I switch from note type 1 to note type 2, the content of field A will stay in position #4 (because I have Frozen Fields on there), where a totally different field is now.
If I switch from note type 2 to note type 1, the content of field A will disappear, because note type 2 has less than 6 fields and the content was in position #6.

I know that Image Occlusion 2 Enhanced has two synchronized fields (Sources; Remarks), so it can work, but I want all my fields to be synchronized between note types.
>>
>>142862864
Can't you just reorder the fields so they match up? Add empty fields if you have to.
>>
>>142863180
>Can't you just reorder the fields so they match up?

In the card browser, Edit-->Change note type allows you to select the mapping for the fields

I realise my mistake now. オフ in オフ会 actually means "offline" not "off" since 会 only means "meeting".

I blame it on my tiredness. In fact, I'm off to bed as soon as I make this post.

So Anki shows me lots of 間 words today, and so I check the dictionary for it when...
>Ma (間) is a Japanese word which can be roughly translated as "gap", "space", "pause" or "the space between two structural parts." The spatial concept is experienced progressively through intervals of spatial designation. In Japanese, ma, the word for space, suggests interval. It is best described as a consciousness of place, not in the sense of an enclosed three-dimensional entity, but rather the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form deriving from an intensification of vision.
>Ma is not something that is created by compositional elements; it is the thing that takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements. Therefore, ma can be defined as experiential place understood with emphasis on interval.

Do you know that feeling when you suspect you're getting a needlessly cryptic explanation for a mundane thing?

It's just a ridiculously roundabout way of saying 恋バナとかしてみて.

恋バナして
恋バナとかして
恋バナとかしてみて
恋バナとかしてみたりして
恋バナとかしてみたりしちゃって
恋バナとかしてみたりしちゃったりして
恋バナとかしてみたりなんかしちゃったりして

Save for the first two, every step adds absolutely nothing to the sentence other than making it more roundabout than its previous form. Yay, Japanese.

て form sort of implies something that's been finished before moving on to whatever comes after it, though it doesn't really have a tense
if it sort of trails off into nowhere then you get the "tense" from context

if it's in the context of an ditzy anime girl chatting to a friend, she's probably recounting something that happened earlier

honestly it's a bad idea to think this hard about it

One of the people who put a huge amount of that parallel texts together was an aging polyglot who passed on a few years ago. Her granddaughter took over looking after the stuff she posted online.

A lot of people here like to make the claim that they are dedicated and spend hours a day reading and whatnot but they really have nothing on how this polyglot loved to live.

Why can't you just say "oni"? And when they ask, "what's an oni", you say "it's a type of spirit from Shinto mythology"? Same with yokai. Why do you need to say "demon"? They're not fallen angels, so describing them as demons is incorrect. Why don't you just say "yokai"? Is that so hard?

This one was pretty hard.

I got them all right but had to keep double checking myself, since there's a tricky nuance for the first couple.

The answers are
b.a.a.a.b

The explanation for the first couple tricky ones is

「~に~ない」は心理的事情、「~(よ)うにも~ない」は物理的事情を表すことが多い

私は食べていちごヨグルト。

あなたは何が食べてですか。

This is terribly wrong isn't it? The first sentence I felt confident, because it's only 2? grammar points. At same time though I think I got the は・が particle wrong. The sentence is about what I'm eating, not what I'm doing.

Second sentence is wrong, I just know it's wrong. It's multiple grammar points. It's asking what you are eating and in question form. The end is right, but the first part of the sentence the structure doesn't feel right. I remember from TK that you can't use the は particle after が, but は doesn't feel right. It reads more like: "You, what are you eating?" it sounds unnatural. Do I even need to specify "you" ("you" in this case is DJT, a group of people rather than 1 person)? One of the first TK lessons was you don't need to specify the subject if it is implied (his 元気 example).

Because the conversation was comparing the "academicness" of DOJG and imabi

what exactly is your definition of "academic" anyway? A monograph that is impossible to find outside of university libraries? I can't be whether it goes through the "peer review" process or not, since that's only for papers
>>
>>142878622
>Because the conversation was comparing the "academicness" of DOJG and imabi
No, it was about preferring to read academic books over imabi, and calling DoJG an academic book.

DoJG is not an academic book in the first place and not a replacement for an actual grammar guide in the second.

>what exactly is your definition of "academic" anyway? A monograph that is impossible to find outside of university libraries?

Yes? That's exactly what academic book / academic text means. Things written by academics for other academics.

Are you talking about university press books? Because that's not what an academic book is. Still, I would rather read a book by a native professor even if it's not university press. It's not about qualifications, he's just better at writing stuff.

Studying linguistics doesn't make one an expert on teaching Japanese as a foreign language. Imabi is bad as a guide because it's a clusterfuck of incompehensible definitions with no order and it's bad as a grammar dictionary.

>Are grad student level textbooks academic?
>If so, how bout undergrad texts?
They're books for academics, not academic books. There is a difference. Academic texts (incl. "academic books") convey an academic opinion on a subject with a detailed breakdown of references and analysis thereof. This also includes "state of the theory" monographs that can function as a substitute for a textbook if structured properly.

"Academic textbooks" would qualify as what you said, because being academic as a textbook is much different than being academic as a book in general.
>DOJG is above the level of most undergrad texts in it's "field"

That fucking weeb will never finish the complete guide and the grammar guide isn't sufficient even for Yotsuba and misses some points completely. You need more complex grammar and things TK just forgot to include. The only thing I was saying is that DOJG is a much better source for that additional grammar than Imabi. Perhaps I should have used "written by an academic after some research" not to trigger you.
>>

DoJG isn't a grammar guide, it's a simple dictionary to locate unknown constructions that you run into. You can't go comparing it to Imabi.

>The only thing I was saying is that DOJG is a much better source for that additional grammar than Imabi.
Even if you were to say what you meant, if Tae Kim is as scarce as you claim (and it's not; it's enough for yotsubato) then you would not want to substitute it with a generic grammar lookup resource, but a guide categorized by points.

Kanji are used to write vocabulary, but it's not a literal system. You have to learn the words that use the kanji on their own even if you know the kanji that are in them already. Even if knowing the kanji makes learning some words very easy, that's not the case for all words.

Yeah, I don't just mean having the words because of how they sound and what they mean, but the way they're written, too. If you're not planning to learn it over the course of ten years, it's best to learn words as a mapping of a written word to the verbal words that you already know.

Maybe the っ is just there to stress the already present glottal stop (assuming it's supposed to be a spoken line). That's all I can think.

I don't think it's a typo though. My IME doesn't let me type んっな. If I try I just get んんあ.

I searched it on google and there are very few results for it. I skimmed through some and it seems to be being used to mean みんな, so I'm guessing it's just a way of stressing the word (similar to all caps or italics).

帰っている is the state of having returned and not the state of returning?

I'm interpreting it as if the person is still going home like walking or on a train, etc, while TK is saying that having returned is a continuous state.

>>
>>142883291
But why? What's wrong with learning radicals first? I will be able to notice them in normal kanji if I know them beforehand so I can get a "feel" of how they affect kanji.
>>
>>142883131
>scientifically worse

If you do to many new cards and get snowed under reviews and drop the language then it's worse.

If you don't give up and end up using Anki for 5 hours a day your retention will go down (how much down depends on individual), but you will learn faster.

It all really depends on you, but for most people it's best not to go over 100 new cards a day (for some even 20 is a chore).

See for yourself, increase new cards limit a bit and after a few days if you still want more increase it again. If you ever start getting too many reviews, lower daily new cards (or stop doing new cards altogether for a few days if it's way too hard for you).

tldr;
Work it out yourself by increasing and decreasing daily new cards as you see fit at the moment.
>>

What part of AT THE SAME TIME do you not understand? Vocab is more important than radicals, if you only want to do one you do that. Else do both.

>>
>>142883341
Learning radicals takes a week tops. So he can power through and then start vocab. Doing both at the same time makes no sense as he's learning radicals to remember words as sets of radicals, not random scribbles (works for some people better). Either way, no need to sperg out as a week doesn't matter in the long run.

It means that he will finish radical deck in half the time he would if he did both at the same time (he claims 3 days). Then he will devote all his time to learning vocab. In 6 days time he will be exactly in the same place he would be if he did two at the same time. (Maybe even he will be slightly better off as some words may be easier knowing radicals.)
