2 is a VR simulation with some of the worst cases of despair syndrome. It was meant as an attempt to reform them through the power of Hope, but the entire thing was infected by Junko's "surviving" AI who tried to pervert the whole thing to keep producing despair from the grave.
Monokuma's "sibiling" Monomi was designed as the overseeing AI while the sleepy gamer girl participant was a helpful AI "mole" agent to smooth things over.
The main character was by far the most ruthless monster of all, but ~amnesia~ allowed him a chance to choose a different way. All the people who die during the experience end up in a coma, while the gamer girl AI needs to die as a way to expunge the Junko AI. Everybody else escapes.

I liked DR2 better when it comes to characters and trials (except for improved hangman's gambit), but something about "locked room(/school)" mysteries is more appealing and exciting to me than open island setting so overall I liked DR1 and DR2 just as much.

The despair virus was pretty much just a big dumb red herring. Mikan getting her memories back was the VR world glitching, it was completely unintended. The dumb despair virus didn't even really need to be there.

Frankly if we're talking "insults to the mystery genre", in DR1 the villain having a secret twin who isn't revealed until near the end of the game who does a bunch of shit for Junko to explain away how the character did things is even bigger. Surprise twins that weren't mentioned earlier is a big fat no-no in this genre.

On that note, Danganronpa Zero is actually surprisingly solid in it's writing. The ending being a I was the villain all along?! type deal would no doubt piss people off but it was consistent and a logical conclusion to everything presented within the story (+what readers would know from being familiar with the games beforehand) If anything what it does with Junko retroactively makes some of the earlier stuff in the series more believable

Hinata being Izuru was the only twist in the last hour or two of play--subverted slightly because I hadn't read any of the dipshit side material so the whole "Kamakura Izuru" plot felt shoehorned in at the very last minute.

Pretty much, since Togami isn't there (for the most part) for her to revolve around. Her crush on Togami was a funny angle to go with and all but in DR1 it ended up dominating her entire character, which wasn't cool. It was -kinda- clever in DR1 because the killer is playing advanced high-level mindgames with you--by straight-up telling you all her plans and motivations she's denying you the catharsis of putting all the pieces together. She's putting the player in the same despair as the characters--there's no way to really stick it to her, no way to beat her in a satisfying way.

But repeating that in DR2 isn't clever, it's just annoying. Goddammit, I've been building my hatred of the mastermind for 5 fucking chapters, I'm ready to smoke her, not sit around crying about hope and despair and the future. Just let me go ham on her, for fucks sake.

My take is that the whole thing was engineered by Kakamakura Izuru to get his pre-surgery memories/emotions back, rather than being on Junko's behalf. He obviously anticipated everything that happened, so he altered the shutdown sequence ahead of time to combine the memories of the school trip with their despair memories instead of one overwriting the other.

My feeling is that he couldn't know going into the simulation whether he would come out the other end an agent of despair or not, so the game was set up in such a way that he could take either choice.

Supporting this is what happens to Hinata in the simulation, where his hair goes white and and his eyes go red when he accepts being Izuru Kamakura. We've only seen that one other time in the series--when Ishimaru merges with his split personality and becomes Kiyondo. It signifies that Hinata and Izuru are now the same person.
