Sometimes people like uglier designs. Case in point, Maoyuu. Just look in this very thread, there's a few people who will take ugly over 'moe blob/shoujo' regardless of the source material.

In the end, regardless of source material or not, very few people care about sticking to the original style. They only care about sticking to what they think looks better.
