Pretty hard to compare the two, since madhouse is much bigger so they probably got multiple different teams working on different things. The quality of their shows could vary a lot.

As for KyoAni, I don't always agree with the choice of shows they make, but their production values have been fairly consistent and higher than the average studio.

Both studios have a number good shows, madhouse has higher total quantity but lower average quality.

Madhouse shined the best with their movies, mostly Satoshi Kon ones. Now that he's dead and they do third rate adaptations I have to sode with KyoAni.

One anon in this thread with sense. If we're just going by animation, then KyoAni wins. But they really suffer when it comes to things like writing and character design.

Madhouse overall is the better studio, when all the aspects of a show/movie are taken into consideration, not just the animation.

Kyoani is higher on a technical, directorial, and visual level. Their shows are packed with subtle depth and have a deep understanding of body language.
Madhouse is only good when some good freelancer comes by, then you can hardly call it a Madhouse anime.

Madhouse has a much more diverse palette.
Kyoani generally has better animation but lacks anything else.

It's kinda hard to compare any studio to KyoAni. KyoAni is currently one of the most stable studios when it comes to staff. Madhouse is bare bones studio hiring talented freelancers. You can kinda guess what you will get when KyoAni announces their next project. What comes out of Madhouse largely depends on the talents they hire on the project. Current Madhouse is just a carcass of the beast they used to be in the past, not really stamp of quality on itself. KyoAni has quite stable output in their production quality, so you can kind of roughly guess how good the show will be considering its source material.

KyoAni is a good studio even if you don't like their shows. You can't really say much about current Madhouse since they depend a lot on the freelancers.
