How much should I be aiming to read each day? I just started reading a few days ago and so far I've just been making my way through one chapter of よつばと! each day, but I'm worried that that's way too little.

Getting through even that small amount takes quite a lot of effort though, so I feel a bit burned out by the time I'm done.

When am I supposed to start a mining deck and how do you guys manage it?

Like, I'm already doing 20 new cards in core a day and if I also start mining then the work load will be pretty huge. Also what about mining cards that will turn up later in core by chance?

I'm 1500 words in by the way.
>>
>>142679341
The Core decks are a waste of time imo. The whole idea behind them is to make it so you don't have to look up as many words once you start reading, but even if you finish Core6K you will still have to look up tons of words.

If you've finished your introductory grammar guide (e.g. Tae Kim), then just start reading and referencing the DoJG when you encounter unknown grammar or need to refresh your memory. If you're going to mine, this is when you're supposed to start, though bear in mind that people successfully learned foreign languages for thousands of years before Anki or the concept of spaced repetition existed (also bear in mind that the simple act of reading and looking up things you've forgotten is a form of space repetition in and of itself).

Hey guys I'm studying kanji radicals using the deck from the guide, and it has alternative forms for most radicals. Do you have to memorize those alongside the main radical or are they just a bonus kind of thing?
>>
>>142681319
Keeping a ratio on AB is easy if you just seed what you download thanks to the yen (bonus point) system. Basically, you just seed, and even if nobody leeches from you, you accumulate "yen" for the simple act of seeding which you can then use to buy ratio (which then allows you to download more torrents, giving you even more yen).

The main factor in how much yen you get is how long you've been seeding a torrent for, but the size of the torrent is also accounted for, as is how well seeded it is (torrents with <5 seeds give the most yen).

You start out with a 10GB buffer so you'd have more than enough to download that one VN. Also, the site is in freeleech mode for the next few days to celebrate its 7 year anniversary, so you can download whatever you like in that time frame and it won't count at all toward your ratio.

Something has been causing me a lot of srress and I finally figured out what it was. Awhile ago, I don't know if it's still posted, there was an image showing many *private* colleges which only have 4 one-semester courses (i.e. potentially 4 years, minimum 2 years) for Japanese which end up with you at N4 level (by their own admission. So, the meme became 4 years for N4, a joke about how shitty college courses are. This line of thought lead me to develop the idea that, since I personally got to N4 in far less that even a single year, that the only reason people don't emerge from college after 4 years completely fluent in Japanese is because college sucks. *I*'m going to self study and be perfectly fluent in 4 years! Yeah!

Well, I made a mistake. I'm sure reading it out like that makes it obvious what it was. It was the logical fallacy of assigning the number "4" to language learning in the first place. As I passed my 2nd year studying Japanese and head deeper into my 3rd year, I was gripped by a fear I didn't have before: that of still not being native level despite self studying for an amount of time currently rapidly approaching 4 years. I didn't realize my mistake, or the truth of language learning that is a fucking hard pill to swallow. The truth is... it takes longer than 4 years to get to (college educated) native level in a language. 1 year, 2 years, 4 years... they're plenty to get pretty good. Hey, you could read manga and novels cover to cover without sweating too much, like me. But native level is a distant dream. Opening up a Japanese news site and being able to competently digest all the articles is a distant dream. Being able to decipher every tweet is a distant dream. Being able to fluently produce sentences about any subject is a distant dream. It doesn't take 4 years to learn a language. It takes a lifetime.

Language is a naturally evolving thing which changes faster the more people use it, and Japan is a tiny place with a lot of people packed in there using it. Imagine someone learning English in Germany in the 80s but not keeping up with the language as how it is used by the natives of whichever brand of English the Gerfag picked up on. I mean, I have trouble understanding a lot of the shit really young people go on about in my own native language and I've worked around a lot old people who seem completely fucking lost as to what their grandkids were going on about half the time, despite everyone sharing the one language. There is just so much colloquial usage and shifting cultural trends that alter meaning of nuances that unless you are actively a part of the native usergroup, you're going to be left behind the curve.

>Being able to fluently produce sentences about any subject is a distant dream.
Do you practice? How often do you express yourself in English? Hours a day? How often do you express yourself in Japanese? Have to realistic about it.

The name is derived from the shape but even so throughout France and Germany, what is considered a croissant has changed over time and still exists in many varieties so to sperg out as though the concept of a crossiant is being butchered is more of an indication that you don't really know all that much about the pastry or hold an opinion that only a very specific tradition of baking and preparing them is valid. I'm sure there are several hundred elderly ばあちゃん scattered throughout France, Austria, Germany, etc. who all hold your view but each differ as to what the "correct" form is and likely think the other is a bastardisation of their own preference.

Munich is pretty chill, with its Japanese building quite a bit "offside" the main building , but Berlin supposedly has the best university to study Japanese at. I imagine Düsseldorf being quite a good choice as well.

But I dropped out almost 20 years ago, and back then the structure of studying Japanese was vastly different than it is today. But I think you'll be fine either way.

The FSI trains people to speak and read Japanese at a professional level in 88 weeks. This apparently takes about 2000 hours of classtime plus about 2000 hours of independent study.
>The goal of language training for FSI students is typically General Professional Proficiency in Speaking and Reading. This level is approximately equivalent to "Superior" on the scale used by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
>Speakers at the Superior level are able to communicate with accuracy and fluency in order to participate fully and effectively in conversations on a variety of topics in formal and informal settings from both concrete and abstract perspectives. They discuss their interests and special fields of competence, explain complex matters in detail, and provide lengthy and coherent narrations, all with ease, fluency, and accuracy. They present their opinions on a number of issues of interest to them, such as social and political issues, and provide structured arguments to support these opinions. They are able to construct and develop hypotheses to explore alternative possibilities.
>At FSI, it requires most adults at least five class hours a day for five days a week, plus three or more additional hours a day of independent study.

The courses were great for confidence and mental stimulation, but as soon as they ended I started forgetting.
Meanwhile, I started doing Anki since Japanese was popular as fuck in that university and I never managed to get in. 8 years later, I'm still doing my reps and getting better every day, my only regret being that I had spent most of that time in grim perseverance mode instead of seeking out compelling content.

Oh, that wasn't in Germany.
This isn't the sort of thing where you can draw a conclusion on a by-country basis, at least not in the West (as opposed to, say, SEA). The quality of a Japanese program would depend on the merit of the people who run it at each institution - their ability to draw up a good program, teach it well, get people to sign up and get the institution to support it.

I'd imagine Japanese programs would be particularly in demand at acclaimed technical universities, since these would attract serious nerds from far and wide, ensuring a high proportion of flamboyant weeaboos to sustain the low-level courses and high-powerlevel types to sustain the higher levels.

You greatly underestimate classes.
After one year, you can talk about everyday topics and write essays.
They teach functional use of language rather than just thousands of words.

The only advantage the average /djt/fag has in the language is fewer dictionary lookups while reading. Which is kind of moot in the age of text hookers. Even while reading which is supposed to be your strong point, a student from a class will have better reading comprehension. They will also be far better at speaking and listening, and not even comparable when it comes to writing, as most people here can barely handwrite the 10 most common kanji.

Personally, I did not fare well with this approach. I picked a particularly easy read - Western fairy tales translated and rewritten for Japanese children to read. Reading it was easy enough, but it proved so uninteresting to me that I had neglected reading and spent much time with just the anki reps and listening to subbed anime.

What really hooked me on reading was a picture with speculation about a manga I liked, annotated in Japanese. Sheer interest motivated me to work through that picture, jargon and all, and then carry on to the blog it came from. I've been reading only compelling stuff ever since, even when it's way over my depth and I can barely manage half a page per sitting.

If, say, I had a particular job opportunity in Japan, or even serious plans to take a long trip there, then yeah, I'd hit up a language school, get tested and start in an appropriate class.

But since I have none of that lined up, I'm quite content with what online self-study can bring me, without the time and money costs of language classes. I've started reading LNs (finally!) and I choose 電波女と青春男 as my first one, but reading now I'm a bit concerned... that I'm not going to learn anything.

My situation is that I *think* I can grammar almost perfectly, save some mistakes from unknown words, but generally I get the correct meaning almost perfectly, but my kanji knowledge is very, very poor. My shallow vocab is the second issue.

I'm using an OCR (KanjiTomo) to get all those kanjis and things are making sense fine, but will I get to learn/improve my flaws like this?

I mouseover, get the word, and move on without giving a second thought to it... and in less than 5 min I don't even remember what that word was if it appears again (kinda like my Anki reps, heh).

Am I doomed to eternal ignorance?
Is doing endless reps the only way to commit those unknown words and kanjis in my head?

>It doesn't help a lot if you just forget it. It doesn't have to be anki, but you need some of practicing. Or are you planning to keep using dictionaries and DOJG 10 years from now?
How is consulting a dictionary or the DoJG when you forget something any different from reviewing flashcards? How is looking up something in a dictionary or texbook any less valid a form of practice than using flashcards?

When you forget a flashcard in Anki, what do you do? You flip the card and remind yourself of the meaning. When you forget a word while reading, what do you do? You look it up and remind yourself of the meaning.

You're underestimating how often you need to rely on a dictionary for a language as foreign as Japanese, since it doesn't use a Roman alphabet. Even looking words up by radicals is inefficient. The Japanese basically beat kanji into their children's heads - we don't have to do this as ineffectively, but we do still have to brute force our way into the language.

Not really. The grammar point is colored blue on the deck, so if you know it it only takes 2-3 seconds to recognize it and press good.
If you don't recognize it at a glance you can read the rest of the sentence which takes about 10 seconds. Then if you got it completely wrong, you can read as much as you need.

I can't understand the sentence marked with 傍点.
一部の鑞は床に落ちて弾けずに、小さな球体ーーーあるいは粒になって転がっていた
Some solder is fallen on the ground intact and formed tiny balls. Or did they become beads and roll?
What is 鑞 exactly?
Is it part of a candle? My dictionary say it's solder used to combine pieces of metal wich dosen't make much sense seeing as how this is a crime scene with a girl stabbed with a candle formed into a stake.

I don't understand the sentence structure

I'm not sure, but if the writer is living in America they are most likely shorts of ~系のお店.
If so, 系 means "related to" or "dealing goods of" here and merely means "Korean/Chinese store".
Anyway, even though it looks like this is written by a Japanese, 仕入れ先は~から買われた物です sounds redundant and stupid.

It's not a bad idea but good output comes mostly from massive input, not from practicing output, With the exception of actually physically talking, which requires some practice because of the immediacy required.

That said it's not bad for ironing out some misunderstandings.

I think the idea is that Chinese and Korean stores (in America?) carry Japanese-branded rice since they have Japanese suppliers, allowing the writer to live in California Rice Ground Zero without admitting a single grain of 米米 into his inviolable Yamato stomach.

Maintaining access to Japanese rice while living abroad is serious business:

In the beginning it's slower, about 1 and a half or two weeks per level, but after level 50 you level up in a week if you do all lessons as soon as you get them because there are no more new radicals.

I have always read the phrase 七つの大罪 as ななつのだいざい after looking it up when I first saw it, which made sence since it was the most basic reading it could have, making it easy to remember. Now seeing a thread alongside this one for the manga 七つの大罪, it being read たいざい instead... Is there any logical reason to this, or is it just cause たい is cooler than だい?
Thanks for the input

If you would apply "Native people wouldnt say X" to everything they don't say, the freedom of language would dissapear would it not? As long as its grammatically correct and conveys the meaning its meant to, its fine.

On another note, since the concept of "words" (as we see it) is a bit more vague in japanese, particles would be spaced by themselves (making sentences take up MOAR space or together with words which would make it hard to read with my elitist brain, since they are not the words they would be grouped with...

Despite all the resources that exist learning Japanese still requires self-discipline, something the vast majority of people don't have.

>>
>>142729618
The simple reason pronunciation in Japanese is for the most part always the same.

For countries where that's the case as well like Eastern Yurops it comes really easily.

Then you have English where half the things are pronounced differently then they are written.
>>
>>142729784

It's your own fault.

Why would you pick vocab and know the words if you can't understand the grammar?

It's still not too late though, grammar is pretty easy if you have a lot of reference from somewhere (like watching anime and paying attention to the sounds).

Not even that, shit's simply nicer to read in kanji when you know them. Only people who don't actually know kanji or don't read much will want to get rid of them, and those people don't hold any authority to carry out writing reforms in Japan.
新字体 was bad enough, no reason to fuck up the writing system further.

Swedish, which is germanic. I'm a teacher in swedish and teach people thru english and recently japanese.
Japanese has the Kanji which will always be "the wall", but other than that its a very constistent language with particles that point out functions and verb stems that are the gold of the language as they form basically every sentence and knowing more verbs and ways to conjugate them expands you capabilities. Which is simple.

English has no particles to state what is what in a sentence, so non-natives and even natives have a hard time knowing what is what. As well as stringing abtract words such as it and is etc and placing them in the right order and in the right places for the sentence to be correct grammatically fucks many people up.
The same goes for swedish, but we have more stupid rules that invert our sentences when we say negatives things, but only somtimes...

tl;dr
Its just a mess, while Japanese is rather straightforward, with the expention of Kanji
>>
>>142730339
im the one in the thread that has been saying English is quite difficult, I understand that even as a native speaker. I learned German for about 2 years and had to stop for reasons. Would I have an """"easier"""" time with Japanese? No genders and more straightforwardness sounds nice.

>>142730308
