When you think about the beginning of the series, Biba's talk of liberating humanity of its cowardice does make some measure of sense.

Remember in the first couple episodes how disgustingly paranoid everyone was of the kabane? An innocent man was executed simply because the guards didn't want to take their chances searching him for bites, like they're supposed to. And then you think about how unreasonable everyone acted towards Mumei and Ikoma once it came out that they were half-kabane, despite the fact that the two had repeatedly saved their asses. People in the stations are completely controlled by their fear of the kabane.

Ikoma was disgusted by it too, but the difference between him and Biba is that Biba chose to punish humanity for its cowardice instead of eliminate the source of it.

The writers are using the characterization properly though. It's just that all of us don't like this kind of unfortunately manipulated character. Mumei is young, naive, and needy and was manipulated through a combination of all three. Since the plot made sure that all three were in play at the same time, I consider that bit of writing to be well done. It wasn't like the usual anime show that schleps a few ideas together and then moves ahead with an event. WIT and the production staff seem to have a real care for the show's plot.

Perhaps they could have spoonfed the info, but I like how they drifted across the scene with the camera, held focus, then cut to consternation and worry. Calling Sawano an original soundtrack composer in the way he's used nowadays is stretching the limits of the term to it's absolute limit. The guy is an arranger for Mika Koyayashi, Cyua and Egoist music albums period that are then slapped onto shows sponsored by Sony Music Entertainment and called an original soundtrack for the sake of marketing reasons. 15 tracks of almost all vocal tracks is not a TV anime original soundtrack, it's a fucking vocal album. TV show soundtracks tend to have at least 25 tracks minimum sometimes more with some spanning as many as 3 or even 4 CD's worth of content that don't all sound the same from show to show. You can try to call a vocal album slapped onto a show in ways that often clash horribly because it was never meant to go with in the first place a soundtrack but really it's a fucking vocal album that's made that way for marketing reasons because vocal albums sell better traditionally than original soundtracks.

Doing this to shows is apparently not only okay now but imminently desirable since according to the crunchyroll kids nobody makes music as hype and totally fucking awesome as Hiroyuki Sawano and his singing friends anymore even though it's the same basic edgy lyrics vocal album shit that's gets pumped out every 6 or so months as is expected of a vocal album producer over and over and slapped onto some random show. In fact we don't even have to wait 6 months this time because we'll be hearing the fuck wit and his Kobayashi in August with the 4 episode Seven Deadly Sins special and then I'm sure he'll vomit out something in the Fall that'll sound identical like this shows "OST" and get all kinds of unwarranted praise for it. No way we get to go the rest of the year without another full on Hiroyuki Sawano Vocal Album called a TV anime soundtrack. Whatever show it's probably going to be just hasn't been announced yet but it's going to be obvious the moment it is.

Well if there was any question that this was going to just end up as shitty as SnK (not sure why there would be after the first hybrid colony showed up, totally wasn't obvious they were going to roll out idiotic kabaneri-hybrids eventually), there is now an answer.

This episode was absolute TRASH. I think the icing is really how disjointed the later parts of the episode are. So many instances where the viewer just doesn't get any kind of context for what is going on until suddenly a dramatic scene is necessary. The best example of this is how there is just a gaggle of civies from KISAMA's train and suddenly they are surrounded by liberationfags. KISAMA gets the shit knocked out of him three times without doing anything to dodge, block or counter. The art seemed to take a huge dip in this episode too.

The interesting parts of the premise were the steampunk feudal-train survival things, NO ONE WANTED FUCKING MAGIC ZOMBIE TITANS AND SOME ALL-ENCOMPASSING "EPIC" PLOT. You'd think the production team most exposed to the flaws of SnK would have learned from them, but they are rushing headlong into the same shit-quagmire.

You need to recognize that there's a spectrum here, anon. There's a difference between being unrealistic and being completely ridiculous. Nobody's expecting realism from a show that is inherently fantastical (it's a steampunk world overrun by zombies, after all), but this hasn't set itself up as a show where a guy with a hand knife can slice through a steel cable as thick as an oak tree like it was a piece of thread.

I can even accept the kabane laser shit, as this show is pretty good at conveying that there's still a lot about them that we really just don't know. But the power levels for the humans are relatively established at this point, and they don't provide for the bullshit displayed this episode.

The best "action" scene in episode was the fight in the lord's room, which didn't involve the steampunk or zombie elements in any way other than the guards lugging around those guns. Kurusu's assault on the train again involved no zombies, but at least some tech appeared. Although, that minigun popping out of nowhere was FUCKING RETARDED. Why has no one else used it? He chose to instead focus his resources on his skirmishes with the feudal lords.
Biba's group somehow survived and the experience made Biba into what he is today. He came to believe that only the strong had the right to live and that the bakufu that abandoned him were cowards.

In short, he went insane. The entire ordeal of being betrayed by his father and being thrust into war with the kabane was too much for him and he broke.

This show had really great start, probably best in the season. Then around episode 4-5 it went downhill. Episodes 8 and 9 are just boring to the point that you can drop the show right here and nothing value will be lost
