No.

RIP uploading the Koran a thousand times to the non light novels folder under various spellings.
>>
It's sad that they also kicked out all novels which are closly related to anime and manga.
Like LoGH, NHK or Tatami Galaxy...
>>
>>142637345
Wait, seriously? At the very least, novels that have anime adaptations should be retained.

Speaking of raws, it's been almost a month since jcafe died. Is there anyone that has any clue what happened? Any word from the admin or anything?

>>
>>142643570
Probably will if there's enough people. Raws are pretty important.
>>
>>142643915
If I am reading the post correctly, the reason is not at all stress on the servers.
It rather seem to be the effort required to keep the non-light novels in a proper quality (removing inferior/broken/dublicates, making sure the context actually is what its labeled as, and so on.)
And if not enought people on staff (or unregistered volunteers, whatever) care about non-light novels, it gets the axe.
I'm actually surprised MU is continuing to index light novels as there seem to be a really low interest in novels from most mods.
>>
Why the fuck would you stop allowing to upload raws, especially with jcafe being down right now?
Fucking bullshit
>>
>>142644392

Manga updates shouldn't index Chinese shit and light novels, it just makes a mess of the releases page. I mean, there's fucking novel updates, I don't need that shit on Manga Updates.
>>
>>142644392
Well, I'll admit that the raws section can be a bit of a clusterfuck since it isn't automatically organized like translations are, but I'd say that's acceptable if it's literally the only good place left to put them.
>>
>>142638994

Differentiating LNs and non-LN prose is a mistake. There's nothing about LoGH and Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon that makes one an LN and one not an LN, beyond the largely arbitrary and ever-changing whims of publishers.

If we do make a new site, we should probably try and keep it off Reddit this time.
>>
>>142648992
Not only don't I see that happening, I don't see it as necessary. I would suggest we simply have a thread where we upload raws to dropbox or whatever, then coordinate a translation, and then upload it when we're done.
>>
>>142649157
>upload raws to dropbox or whatever, then coordinate a translation, and then upload it when we're done.
That would work for maybe a tiny percentage of what gets uploaded. If I buy a magazine and want to upload it, I'm not waiting around for someone to pick up a series in there and start translating it. All I want is to be able to upload shit and forget about it, and then someone who sees the file can then download and do whatever they want with it at any point in the future.
>>
>>142649248
There are a number of systems for distributed datastores in existence. Since the information isn't sensitive or anything, it can be fairly lightweight.

There was one Chrome extension that tracked new releases by spamming with requests and got all its users banned the first day they implemented it.

So turning into shit means not allowing western novels?

As for raws one of the arguments is that almost no one can read runes and considering that there's raws for translated stuff it's kind of a waste of space if the quality is low. It's also 334GB, so it's something to care about.

Also someone made a mega link for those novels that got purged I could post it if someone wants it. This is what is on the link http://pastebin.com/cbfYnG0e

If this all that was purged, no problem. Did you even look at your link? It is far from "western novels", look at the section "Japanese Authors".

>>142654858
And it became one of its function, why is this a problem? If the people in charge of it would say "we are looking for a way to keep this up in the future, but with restrictions to ensure high quality", that would be good.

>>
Fuck. Not happy about the raws. 80% of scanslation sucks and over 65% aren't even translated directly from Japanese.

Being able to read scanslation and raws side by side is great for the Japanese learner or jlpt 3/4 who don't want to have to look shit up from the dictionary constantly. Moreover, scanslations are usually from magazine raws and lack the extras that are in tanks.

We need a place to archive tank raws damnit.

I don't see hot it falls under scope creep.
Like right now, just put up a folder "weeb novels" in the directory of light novels. Put a txt in it how weeb novels is defined and that the uploader has to watch out for "quality" and if they don't it is their problem.
Than just don't organize it or anything
you just have to delete everything that is not allowed on the site.
Which is something you have to do for every directory so this also won't be any cost increse.
>>
>>142657680

I don't relly see the problem in finding something that is already out.
the problem ist that right now people were motivated to upload stuff like the new translations from viz f.e. but after madokami kicks japanese lit out no one will upload the rips. so if you can't buy the ebook version you are fucked.
>>
>>142658792
Well we've been talking about keeping the "weeb" stuff, which I think includes haikasoru works. Or at the very least, should.
>>
>>142658844
as long as the weeb stuff gets moved out of the PURGATORY folder everything will be fine.
I think.
>>
>>142658190
It's trivially easy to store translations seperately from the raws themselves, and in a very compact way I might add, by using a simple image map. Then you just need an HTML generator to combine them into a static page you can view in a browser.
>>
>>142659004
Wasn't that how J-Comi worked?

Hello, Sunako here from madokami. I'm somewhat busy today so I have only a few points to make as follows:

1: We aren't kicking out anime related novels such as LoGH, those types of things being in the purgatory are merely an oversight we'll fix in time.

2: Nothing is immediately in danger of deletion, things are just read only until we make a more final decision regarding content guidelines.

3:We aren't final on raws being out, as it is now we are thinking about allowing them in some limited scope, this is up for discussion. If you are willing to be civil while talking to us about it join the IRC channel to have some influence on the decision for this.

You can verify my(and maybe qq's?) trip via this file on the website: https://manga.madokami.com/Info/trips.txt

Yeah, as with every web project. With this kind of thing though, I think it'll all fall into place once it's up and has the goods. If all these sites are going down or questioning their own support of raws, there's clearly a market for a host. A good, active repo of raws will eventually attract translators. And I'm sure they'd enjoy not having to think about typesetting.

But I'm not a translator so I can't say for certain.

>>142659706
That's out of the blue, but I will accept it.
>>
>>142660336
The one thing I would be concerned with, and I'm not sure if it's been addressed in this thread, is potentially how public such a site would be.

There ARE sites that exist that host raws like whatever, uncompressed, right out there to read (like senmanga, which fucking sucks) but I feel like a really good raw site would get well known and then shut down. Well, assuming it was really very public like a normal booru.

It would definitely end up public as all hell. Make no mistake. You can't turn a website with a quality crowd-volunteered service into a secret club. But what kind of things are burdensome to a raw site specifically? Is it DMCA licensing shit (does that even fly with the untranslated works?) or is it just because scans are uncompressed, heavy, and it ends up being a lot to host?

I don't chase after raws so I know zero of this.
>>
>>142660804
Japanese companies go after raw providers harder than scanlations, from what I've seen over the years. Probably because most raw sites are made to serve japanese users.
>>
>>142660804
I'd say DMCA stuff, but I've never hosted things, just observed over the years.

Raws are more "dangerous" because for a nip, that's like, full on piracy even though they could easily get the manga and cheaply over there in their own language.
>>

Make it as private as madokami, but leaving irc channel on page so people can request account. Can't DMCA shit that isn't licensed on US I guess.

Good point. Can we ban Nippon IPs and get away with that as our "due diligence"? You know, DMM style.

>>142660947
But then you won't grow as a translation service. I mean, it's GOOD for a site to be on the hushed side if it was is just a place to repo raws like Madokami. But a "transbooru" would probably be best if it were open and people knew about it.

Or you can somehow go door to door to all the scanlators who don't have typesetters and tell them where to find it. Build it up that way.

Okay, then explain to me the reason as to why you would just hide the chapters behind people not having an account?
You can access pretty much everything, even the forums no one gives a fuck about. But just to be able to see a fucking chapter you need to register?
There is absolutely no reason for this and it is pointless. In case of madokami I understand that making an account is needed and I have no problems with it, since the entire site is locked behind the account, but in case of bato.to it is just bullshit.
If you make a website for public use, let the public use it. If it isn't open, I don't care about it.

Hello subjects. I added this to state.txt as well, reposting here:

In answer to the general categories of objection and panic we've gotten:

1. DON'T PANIC. We haven't deleted anything, and nothing will be deleted until we decide what to do with them, whether that's moving them elsewhere, or keeping them and revising policy.

2. This is the fifteen thousand, four hundred and ninety-ninth time we've had this discussion. Every human community ever has a point where somebody starts doing something not everybody likes, some rules are set up to prevent the class of issues, autists find loopholes in them, everybody has a good time with DRAMA and MISUNDERSTANDINGS for like a week, and then they carry on. exhentai and IRL porn, wikipedia and pokemon, 4chan and generals. I bet even the curators of the Library of Alexandria were dealing with this shit, shortly before Everything Was Fireâ„¢.

Thus, I've written some shitty rules, and I don't expect the 15500th time to be much different. The point is _not_ to exclude Horizon, LOGH, etc, but it _is_ to exclude Lord of the Rings, which I hope at least 99% of us agree on. Somewhere between those lies the One True Boundary Of Weebness. "non-light novels" approximates that at a glance. Any better suggestions of a similar brevity are welcome.

[1/2]
>>
>>142665494

3. The actual amount of bytes of whatever we choose to include is not well correlated to the total cost of inclusion. 4GB of non-light novels and 340 GB of raws is a relative pittance compared to the 3.3TB of translated stuff. The total cost is better correlated with the amount of semantically distinct objects, which is why I really want to avoid pulling in the all japanese literature on a whim.

4. I'm pretty happy about the boundary of Novels right now, and so seems the zeitgeist. I'm less certain about the Raws, for the reasons that have been cited. That being said, I personally don't want raws, so if anybody wants to step up and host them, please get in touch. If you bring the domain and server, I can help with the initial setup, data transfer, general sysadmin stuff, meme compliance, etc.

VPSes are cheap as hell. Like 32 USD a year cheap eg Ramnode. The only problem is blocking those retards trying to hack your server (and securing it) and making sure that you don't get DMCAs because they'll shut your shit down (especially servers located in the US like ramnode).

Dedicated servers are a bit more expensive. These are a popular one: kimsufi.com/us/en/

There's an anon called Spaghetti on /g/ who runs a website called soupwhale. Apparently what you can do is go to his IRC and ask for a 10 GB slice of his a gigabit server. I'm not sure if he offers that free hosting though.

Then install nginx and some other shit via command line and set up autoindex. You have to know how to secure the server though because every day some faggot will try and break in. So you'll also need something like fail2ban. And you'll need an ftp server too like madokami - so install vsftpd on it.

And autoindex looks really basic like this: http://cscie12.dce.harvard.edu/lecture_notes/2007-08/20080423/images/autoindex1.gif

Signup I never figured out but you can set up something like this: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-http-authentication-with-nginx-on-ubuntu-12-10

Point is, making something like kami is really hard if you don't have any technical knowledge. Making a torrent is as easy as dropping a few tracker urls, even on linux.

>can't even get in anyway because my IP was preemptively banned for no reason

Do people not even understand why giving sauce is good or bad anymore? You're supposed to deny people who can't google search or use the archives, not normal posters who can actually find things on their own. The process is just too arcane and stupid, and I know that I'm just going to get laughed at again anyway because you blind apes just follow the rules instead of thinking about why they're in place, but maybe somebody of some intelligence will read this and realize that it needs to stop. There's a point when you cross the line from good exclusivity to just epik trolling, and it's when you target your brothers instead of scum.
>>
>>142677848
There is an explanation on the site itself how to get in.

Those where 5 minutes of hard work to get in,weren't they? Don't push yourself, time to take a break.

>>142677848
>Do people not even understand why giving sauce is good or bad anymore
Yes, you are just stupid. There is tons of information on how to get in. The site even has a fucking readme that tells you. No one gets spoonfed for this, because it isn't meant to be spread and it is meant to be used by as little as possible. The more it is known about, the higher the chance for it to get taken down. The it is known, the more common it is to fire. Sharing isn't caring in this case, it might be caring for the person you are informing. But, for everyone else, it isn't.
>>
>>142678015
>>142677937
You can't even get on to the main site without a login, unless there's some secondary domain that doesn't show up on google. And while the process is short, again, finding it is impossible unless somebody spoonfeeds you.

There is 22 results for irc in this thread. Whenever it gets brought up on /a/, chances are, someone brings up the IRC as well. That's your hint. It's an incredibly simple and obvious one. The goal is to stop idiots and lazy people from getting in and for good reason.
>>
>>142678120
These threads don't come up often, and no, extrapolating "you have to register for a forum and then type an extremely specific command into their IRC" from seeing the word "IRC" in a thread is not a reasonable expectation.

>>142678015
I'd also like to add that I obviously understand the need for secrecy, but there's no point in even hosting the service at all if even people who can google, lurk, and use the archives are kept away from it.
>>
>>142678178
No, from seeing IRC you should think "there is an irc for this, maybe I could ask in there?".

>>142678234
You're really bad at reading, aren't you? You can't get into the fucking site without a login, at least not on "manga.madokami.com". If there's some other website you're talking about, then it isn't mentioned anywhere that people can easily find it.

You totally can enter that site without a login. It seems you can't on a mobile device though.
>>
>>142678314
>That's not an obvious thing to intuit for non-circlejerkers who don't use IRC
No, it is, even for people who don't use irc. I fucking don't. The only people who wouldn't pick it up are newshits who don't even know what IRC is. IRC has always been one of the most common things used on /a/, for more than just communication. So, when you find a site you can't get into, but people bring up its IRC. It should be incredibly obvious that you can use the IRC to get what you want. And yes, they probably would tell you to fuck off, because the guide is normally in the fucking IRC topic.
>>
>>142678314
>That's not an obvious thing to intuit for non-circlejerkers who don't use IRC;
That's an obvious hint for anyone that didn't start using the internet after 2010. And even some newfags are smart enough to catch on. Keep crying for why there isn't a giant sign up button, retard.

>>142678389
>>142678393
I'm 24 and have been using the internet since I was a kid, and I've never found IRC to be particularly useful for anything except this garbage. Even on /a/, I can't imagine any other uses except for circlejerking or being part of a subgroup or something. Please don't pretend that it's unreasonable for someone not to use or be intimately familiar with it, there are myriad ways to access anime and manga available to anyone with google, and anybody could conceivably get by without ever needing or wanting to use it.
>>
I'd love it if a to /a/ would be behind this kind of wall. It sure would prevent a lot of retards who shouldn't be here from coming.

Some people, including myself, believe you should not use anything you don't understand. If you can't be bothered to learn how to rebuild your engine, you should drive a car. Just lay down and die. I'm exaggerating for effect, but it's that kind of feeling.
>>
>>142682021
No where near as bad as eyecancer watermarks fucking everywhere, don't get in the way of the actual manga and you can just skip reading them.

For the same reason everyone should have basic knowledge of some programming language. It teaches you how to use the damn computer better somewhat and its an incredibly useful skill that literally everyone can use.

I really wish we could push a mandatory programming as a soft math in high schools. It really is a useful thing to learn even if you never use it. Hell they could just do python or something.
>>
>>142682085
Not really, but I know about a lot of different things and I'm handy.

Have you have tried communicating or helping someone who only knows how to fucking use their computer to open IE and open up facebook? If you are going to use something, at-least learn some of the fucking basics instead of dicking around like a retard.

How useful is 'basic' knowledge of programming language?
>>

Jcafe died? Holy shit, I remember surfing their forum like 10 years ago searching for raw manga to scanlate. Sad that they have fallen.

There are so many things I don't know about current technology, I might as well just be a retard.

Like, phones. I can't even make apps. Actually, I don't even know how phones 'work'. Telecommunications, like economics, is basically foreign land to me.
>>
>>142682249
That's ok. You're only barely below people who can make apps.

Don't let /a/'s incompetence at being able to get into Madokami fool you. This is a gross underestimation of the internet and its ability to sift out sources and information. And an overestimation of their desire to put in effort that results in subpar work. To begin with, people who attempt to steal translations and pass it off as their own work WILL get called out on their shit. Especially from a community-volunteered source. You can't get away with that for long. Plus, scanlation groups already have to put in effort to grab typesetters for their work. You're going to assume that BAD typesetters will spend the time to typeset something poorly and then put their own name on it? Even CGRascal is decent at typesetting, he just has gross English?

This idea came to me because I used to grab untranslated non-h touhou doujins from exh, upload them to danbooru, wait about a week, and then find them translated. For the record, it usually takes someone at LEAST a month after that to decide to take those translations, typeset it, and then reupload it as an English translation back onto exh. People aren't going to produce shit work that is readily available for anyone of good skill to work on. Unless there's some a huge disinterest in a work due to lack of updates or knowledge of the work at all anyway.

If they did, they aren't going to attach their name to it. And I am sure that the majority of people who do decent work wouldn't go around stealing credit of where the translations and raws come from. There's really no reason to take credit for translating and getting raws if all you do is typeset. Most of those danbooru-translated non-H doujins I mentioned are properly credited to "Danbooru Translator Fairies" or something like that.

I don't think this is something to worry about now, but it'd be great if we were to usher a golden age of such fast typesetting that our biggest problem was worrying about people rushing their work in awful quality.

It helps understand the fundamental building blocks of a PC (software side), which makes troubleshooting computer problems easier. It's also a great way to learn complex problem solving, as it helps develop skills in breaking down complex tasks into smaller parts.

I dunno. I don't do much programming but I feel like I use lessons I learned along to way there a lot. It's like trig. Trig is useful almost every day for basic problem solving. If you are building something you can almost always use lessons learned from trigonometry to make the task easier.

When they are manga pages with different dialog in them I get confused a bit, but when they are big colorful message pages I don't really mind.
>>
So I remembered I had an account on this site and decided to check out one of the series I was translating. Some of the chapters were downloaded from Batoto, some from KissManga and some were not uploaded at all. All this despite me providing a direct download link for every new release. What's even the point of Madokami these days?
>>
Speaking of 'secret club', why doesn't it have a 'download this entire folder' option?
>>
>>142683625
Scraping batoto is slower then it used to be (for me personally).
>>
>>142683625
>What's even the point of Madokami these days?
The only things I ever use it for, and I do it rarely is when I want to download entire tank releases(Horimiya is a very recent example) or more rarely for raws.
>>
>>142683626
Jdownloader.
Those fuckers block FTP downloads so I can't use my 50 connections maxed Bitkinex on it. It's actually faster for me to torrent the whole shit off Animebytes and FTP that across instead of figuring out which version I want.
>>
>>142683626
Ask in the IRC. I remember awhile back I asked if they have any intentions of adding a rss feed for the notifications. I didn't get a reply, but it was later implemented.
>>
>>142683777
>Jdownloader.
Well fuck, I use Jdownloader for tons of stuff, but never noticed it had a madokami extension. I kept thinking about just making a script, but it didn't seem like it was worth the effort.
>>
>>142683909
It must be nice being able to make scripts ;_;
>>
>>142684031
My scripts are a huge fucking amateur mess.
It's not hard to learn though. I started writing simple scripts for sorting and renaming manga/comics files. I learned python for a simple way write downloaders (mostly for manga). If you want to do something just learn how. It took me less then a week to be making things I could actually use.

And?

No you don't. What are you on about? Did they add a requirement that you need a rizon account to enter it? If that is the case, you can't seriously be telling me you can't even figure out how to do that?

It's okay, there's still a lot of shit I can't find on it, that and it takes months sometimes just to download complete manga. I never once said it was bad, but it's not perfect either.

That's if you're lucky. There have been all kinds of crazy shit in the past. Accounts are manually approved, and they've tried out some wacky rules in the past. And people have been banned for the most banal things, like not sharing in the owner's ponyfaggotry.

Wrong.

>There have been all kinds of crazy shit in the past.
Exaggerated personal opinion.

>Accounts are manually approve
You don't know that.

>they've tried out some wacky rules in the past
Exaggerating for dramatic effect

>And people have been banned for the most banal things, like not sharing in the owner's ponyfaggotry.
Now you are playing the victim when you were actually the aggressor.

I probably agree with this post. Iadmin a small imageboard, and I've seen butthurt rule-breaking users exaggerating or even straight making up "facts" about the moderation just to cause mayhem.

What the fuck are you talking about? It's harder to get manga from livejournal fujoshit than making sure to not delete panda cookies.
