Given what we've seen, even in this chapter, I think it's more that Youkai are just considered freaks than a real danger. We've only seen Long Necked, no face, and split mouth youkai. And the cyclops from this chapter was just a stocky kid at best.

Yeah, I was the one to translate that chapter, actually. I was scratching my head at the scan too but it was late at night and I was in no state to QC my own work so I prioritized just finishing up the work.

I will however, admit to being a weak reader on the whole. I grew up speaking it and am fairly comfortable with phrasing and the like but it wasn't until university that I bothered learning kanji. It's always been a bit of a rough spot for me, to be honest.

For what it's worth I asked my cousin in Japan about it and he said it either hinting at Miyama being a trap or a printing error. I'm happy to know now that it was the case and that it got fixed in the tank at least. /endblog

I'm also confused as to whether or not his mother's dead, especially because of the recent chapters. I think the editors might have added this message by confusing Itsuki's mother with Kanoi's.
I looked back, and from what the author has written (even with chapter 16), there hasn't been anything to imply that she is dead. In fact, the only things that has been implied so far is that Itsuki is separated from his mother, and that his dad passed away.

Without getting waaay too far into the weeds, いとこ can mean both "male cousin" and "elder female cousin". However, the more normal way to read itoko is probably as the male cousin, because itoko is a nonstandard gikun reading of the kanji for "elder female cousin" where you'd more normally use juushi for it instead.

I would lean towards interpreting it as Itsuki introducing her in a sarcastically respectful way, i.e. this is my older cousin (implying she acts more like a guy)
