Its like they wanted you to hate her, but then change tunes at a bipolar pace. If they wanted to make her evil, just make her evil and at least give the character some ground to stand on. Trying to have your cake and eat it too by making her both a tragic heroine and sadistic villain leaves no one satisfied. And between the two, we spent a hell of a lot more time being shown the sadistic villain firsthand while spending a few seconds total here and there being told about the tragic heroine. There is enough there for some to see past the surface and understand that theres more going on than meets the eye but most go for the knee jerk reaction instead.

It all comes down to portrayal. Doesn't matter what the character actually does(Axmann) its the parts we're shown and how we're presented with them that count. But here it is, evil irredeemable Lise. If thats the way she is thats just fine. Doesn't matter if she's a villain as long as she's a good villain, which she wasn't because that portrayal just doesn't agree with the core spirit of her character and so we end up with this hot mess.

But its an adaptation, and one with a director who had is own agenda at that. It doesn't effect the character from the LNs, or the one from the VNs who may turn out to be quite different too. Besides the whole thing is just an advertisement for said VN, the opinions of a bunch of westerners who don't know anymore about these characters than the 12 episodes shown here don't really matter to japs anyway as long as they know the VN exists and buy it. And if thats what happens then the show did its job.

For being so impassioned about some of these characters, they fairly incurious about them. Things like Beatrix talking about her vow to Jurgen Bernhard sets off all sorts of questions in the back of my mind.
