Most all villains have a backstory, even some of the one off characters get some backstory. The problem with alot of gintama is people don't watch the first 20 episodes where they go developing the main characters and world

i picked up gintama a while ago. i remember reading that chapter about the mosquito alien harassing hijikata and kondo at the shinsengumi while they think its a ghost.. i have not laughed that hard in a long time. comedy gold
