It would seem that the SC is going to be victorious in the end here, but only a very small handful of them will return, and none of the old guard will. This will mark the final transition between Eren and co. being the young up-and-comers that they were and them being the heroes/old guard. Jean will likely be promoted to leader, with Armin filling in Hange's role, etc. A victory here will prove that fighting isn't pointless and a wave of new blood will pour in to replace the SC's lost manpower.

That's what it seems like to me anyway, with the way they've been grooming certain characters.

Where do the rest of you think this is headed after this battle? It's got to be an important turning point in any case.

You're right, the brass likely wouldn't take them seriously, but not to prop them up as figureheads (not unlike Historia's current role) would be far more ridiculous than you're giving credit for. Not to mention, at that point they would be the most experienced veteran scouts left period. Maybe they'll appoint someone from the Garrison or MP to oversee them for a while, but that fact wouldn't change.

The whole scenario may be unlikely, but not necessarily impossible I think.

Which actually fits the overall thematic opposition between all the major antagonistic forces in the manga and humanity really well, when you think about it. From the First King's ideology, to Rod's fanatism, to the warriors' plan ("put an end to everything"), to Berthold's recent character development, the enemies of humanity have always been about acceptance of fate, resignation and stagnation. Whereas the protagonists advocate for the need to fight in order to bring change (which is the view the author supports).
It would make sense for Annie to be yet another shining example of the Warriors' ideology, even if she doesn't follow their goals.
