It's pretty much just an anime thing. I've been out eating with Jap friends (in Japan, not the Americanized ones) and we've shared food/drink and no one bats an eyelash.

In general, the forwardness and 行動力 most gaijin have scares the shit out of them. For the most part, they are very timid people. When you find one who isn't, their eyes will light up when you don't act incredibly repressed in front of them for the first time and you'll see how desperate they are for real human interaction.

They have even more fucked-up shit over there, though.. Having school shootings happen once every couple of months is definitely bad, but it's nowhere the level of violence the japanese are capable of.
