i started before toonami. i watched some weird satellite japan channel with yellow subs that aired GT and a few vhs movies.

last break was after klk, now i'm back to watching everything each season.

When I was a small child in the 1980s. I watched Maya the bee and stuff like that, not knowing what anime or even Japan was.

I was just saying something similar to this to my brother actually. I think there's something nice about sitting down and watching a cute little SoL anime that might not be winning any awards, but is destressing and harmless and fun. A lot of anime is like this and I think you've got to see it and enjoy it for what it is.

I loved Pokemon and digimon back in the 90s when I was young. Didn't even know it was from a different country at the time. Then I watched adult swim and toonami when we got cartoon network around the time I was 14. Then I watched a few movies my dad recorded off cinema max around the time I was 16 as well as I borrowed the original ghost in the shell movie from a friend. I was hooked started pirating anime like a mad man off limewire. I remember watching gundam wing that way and then I got some 10 episodes into FMA when it got annouced for adult swim so I stopped pirating like a good little boy. So yeah I'd say between 8 and 16 is what really shapped my sensibilities regarding anime. I think watching Berserk around that time from Blockbuster really cemented it as well.

After that i quickly catched up with naruto, one piece and watched the whole dragonball. 300+ finished series by now

Most people at least in my enviroment watched these shows when we were kids. We always went to the library when we we're like seven to read detective conan and bought series like inuyasha and Shaman King.

I would say when you go on the internet and actively watch anime and share your opinion with others is the moment you can say "started to watch anime".

I forgot when I first watched anime, but I remember Gundam Wing, or Sailor Moon was my first. I watched various anime when Toonami was broadcasting during the late afternoon and some on night broadcasts back then. Also watched some subbed anime here and there when I finally got DSL.

I started following anime every season in 2014. Back then, I spent 8-12 hours every day watching hentai/JAV or on /h/. I was losing interest in hentai because I was only looking forward to one, or two out of five hentai released every month. A man can only masturbate to Accelerando, Bible Black, Discipline, and Stringendo everyday for so long before he gets tired of it. So I started following anime hoping to fill some time. Sword Art Online 2 was my first because I read how great SAO was. I thought it was ok and then watched first series. Hell no SAO did not deserve the praise it got. I started to believe all forms of entertainment was dead and was about to drop anime. Then I watched Attack on Titan, Hellsing Ultimate and Jormungard. Those changed my mind and made me continue. When Tokyo Ghoul aired, I started lurking on /r/anime which made watching anime more entertaining.

Got back into the groove with FLCL when I was about 14. Evangelion and Berserk soon followed. The first series I watched as it aired was Black Rock Shooter.

Now I'm 20 and the regularity of my viewing has waned. I read more manga these days.
